Miami Vice brought some of the greatest music to the forefront!! In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins was another one that achieved glory because of that tv show.
The building that Glenn walked out at the end is right across Carnegie Hall at 7th Ave and 57th Street. I worked night shifts a block away from it in the mid 80's. The video really captured the city life at that period of time!
FYI in the Eagles Glen Frey was the RnB guy from Detroit and Don Henley was the more country guy from Texas. As a Gen X kid this Miami Vice soundtrack was massive and a reflection of the popularity of the TV show in 1985.
Even if you can't play the Eagles on your channel, if you've ever heard "Take It Easy" , "Lyin' Eyes" or" Tequila Sunrise", you've heard Glen Frey. And about 😂a dozen other Eagles songs.
I remember when this song came out, I initially fell in love with it because I loved Miami Vice (and Don Johnson specifically) but came to really appreciate what a fantastic song it is. I still love it.
This killer song has the feeling of the times. Miami Vice had to be seen every Friday night while we were beginning to party. Thank you very much for your reactions.
Lived in both city and country/small town. although both have pros and cons, personal preference, small town. Lived in Phila. from 1975 to 1980....Can we say "Disco Fever" - what fun... visited New York, and Washington D.C., while on the East Coast. When I returned to the Mid West it was like I could breathe again. Wide open spaces vs. city skyscrapers of Phila. ... But, hey life is an experience... Love watching you guys, and definitely one of my favorite songs....thank you.
If you're looking for more nightlife vibe songs, check out Dave Stewart " lily was here", Chumbawumba " small town", Billy Idol " flesh for fantasy", Night Ranger " the night has a way", George Michael " fast love" or ANYTHING on a RU-vid channel called Electronic Gems
In the 80s lived near the Berlin Wall in a flat (3rd/4th floor). I could see over the Wall and as a kid I thought the Worl ends there. I thought the wall protected us from not falling off the earth. In the 90s we had as house in rural Berlin and since the 2000s a house with big garden in a central Germany small town. The best to live. White folks, no crime, better air, sea and mountains not far away. It's perfect. This song fits everywhere. Streets in the city, nights on country-roads. Highspeed on the Autobahn. Its like silky bedsheets.
This song brings back memories from Miami Vice. Killer soundtrack and show. Off on another saxaphone song too, love it. If you guys like the sax, you'll like Supertramp- The Logical Song, it's got some awesome sax in it as well and the song is a great classic
'In the city' by Joe Walsh by Frey's old Eagles band mate is a must. Also recommend 'the heat is on' and 'Smugglers Blues' from Frey as well, both bad ass songs. Smugglers Blues also is tied to the 'Miami Vice' TV series and really highlights Frey's multiple talents as a musician and actor.
The sax just makes this song stand out so much. It would have been a good song without it, but with that incredible sax it makes it one of the best songs of the 80's
Ah, Miami Vice, pink shirts and white jackets! Well, even though not the whole The Eagles, I do like it a lot, and I definitely love Hanley alone with The Boys of Summer, too.
I live on ten acres between a massive hunting lease and a massive horse pasture. My nearest neighbor is like a quarter mile away. I still jam this song all the time.
When you are young, you want the city life. Older the suburbs. I used to live in the suburbs of Chicago and liked going to the city, but not living there. Loved Miami Vice. Cool show. You should listen to "The One You Love" by Glenn Frey. Lots of sax in that one too.
Another one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite artists. Glenn was a founding member of the Eagles, providing vocals and playing many instruments. Phenomenal artist. At some point, please do "Hard To Say" by Dan Fogelberg - Glenn Frey is on background vocals.
The other Glen Frey song that you have to get into is The Heat Is On. I believe that it was a Beverly Hills Cop tune. It is another banging song with the sax.
Hi guys! Have you already done Smugglers Blues? (I didnt see it in your Playlist but might have missed it.) Since you asked, and with apologies in advance for being so long-winded... I grew up in a suburb of Minneapolis. The year I was 17 (summer of 1973 to 1974), I lived in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, but headed up north of the Arctic Circle to an area called Lapland for a few weeks. (A herd of reindeer thundered alongside the train on the way up, and I was fortunate enough to pet the soft muzzle of a baby reindeer.) During that year, I also spent time in Talinn, Estonia as well as in Leningrad and Sochi (a "resort" town on the shore of the Black Sea) in what was then, of course, the Soviet Union. Came back to the U.S. and lived on a hobby farm in Southern Minnesota for a few years. After that, off to Las Vegas during the height of the disco era. Married a rock singer there 2 weeks after we met, then moved to and lived in L.A. during the early 1980s. He died and I moved to the western Maryland countryside after a brief stop back in Vegas. I now live in a fairly rural county about an hour from both Baltimore and Washington D.C.. This is where my heart and soul are happiest. Whenever I'm in Baltimore or D.C., I start to relax the moment I exit the city limits and the landscape changes to rolling hills, cows grazing in pastures, and fields of ripening corn. I'm soooo grateful to have had all those experiences, but I clearly belong to the country! Thank you so much for all the joy you've brought me with your reactions. It's such a pleasure to watch you discover and appreciate the great music that so many of us grew up with in the 60's, 70s and on. Whenever I see artists (or songs) that are new to you, like Boz Skaggs, Al Stewart, and Steely Dan, pop up, I can't click fast enough. It's like watching someone you like open a present you just know they're gonna love! ❤
One of the best 'nite' songs ever made! dbl♥ BTW - you wanna hear another great nite/city song check out ABBA (not kidding) Summer Night City These are def my top 2 nite/city songs!
I want to see Ryan choose "Sunglasses at Night" by Corey Hart from the 1980s as well, just to see if the actual "Sunglasses at Night" song would make Ryan's "Midnight Driving Top Down Sunglasses" playlist. 😂
That was NY City in the video. You could see the twin towers at the World Trade Center in the video 💔. But they used this song in the show Miami Vice. So they threw some of that in the video also.
This first Miami Vice soundtrack CD was a masterfully done and remains one of the best compilations of great songs. The soundtrack for the 2012 Miami Vice movie is also another great compilation.
I was born in the city (Chicago). Spent my summers with my grandparents in Tennesee. Moved to the suburbs to raise my son. All are great, but I think I prefer suburban living.
I was also born in Chicago in 1954 and grew up there, but lived on the northwest side surrounded by suburbs in all directions except east. I've lived in three different suburbs in the last 22 years, but it is not much different from the area of Chicago that I lived and grew up in. My father was from a small town in Oklahoma and we used to go there to visit relatives for 2 weeks every summer for vacation. The last time I went them was age 17. I definitely know I don't think I could have lived there full time.
Really glad you reacted to this!! Brings back memories. Was fortunate to see him perform this live twice. Once on his solo band tour in 1986 at the Austin Opera House, and then again with "the" Eagles in 2002. Again, glad you reacted to this.
A totally different vibe than the East coast cities but Ryan would like Journey’s “Lights”. It’s about San Francisco. And, of course, it’s got Steve Perry.
Ryan liked the word "Silk" in the title of the album "Silk Degrees" by Boz Scaggs when you reacted to Boz's song "Lowdown." 🙂... I prefer the suburbs over the city. When I lived in D.C. for 10 years, I hated to have to pay to park at meters or in garages in the city. And the traffic is just too much.
The city in the video was New York - the only Miami shots were when they were showing Don Johnson. NYC has a certain energy that the song matches really well with that driving beat. I loved NYC when I lived there - no other place quite like it. As an older person, I prefer suburbia. :)
I like a small neighborhood, near shopping but not super close. Like some country as well. City nice to go visit, but not live. Good song, like the sax
I don't know if you know what was Miami Vice back in 80s and even 90s. It was whole culture, with songs, fasion, cars and behavior. In episodes played not only Glen Frey, but: Phil Collins, Gene Simmons, Leonard Cohen, Ted Nugent, Little Richard, Barbra Streisand, Willie Nelson (but he played everywhere), James Brown, Harry Shearer, Isaac Hayes, even Frank Zappa and Miles Davis. And that not the end of the list.
Interestingly, even though Miami Vice was set in Miami it looks like this video was filmed in New York City. Those yellow taxi cabs were definitely 1980's New York taxis. Plus, I used to live there and I recognize a number of NYC landmarks in the video
Glen was very talented......gone too soon. So.....I have lived in a city, the suburbs, and rural. I love rural because I don't have to hit the deck if I hear gun fire - I know it's a hunter sighting in their gun. City life is expensive and desperate - very challenging to meet people.
For Ryan, some songs from my collection with Moon and City, all great in their own ways: Robert Plant - Moonlight in Somoza ELO - Ticket to the Moon Claire Hamill - The Moon is a powerful Lover Echo & The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon Mike Oldfield & Maggie Reilly - Moonlight Shadow ELO - Night in the City The Cars - Heartbeat City The Lightning Seeds - City Bright Stars Yes - City of Love Muse - City of Delusion and ABBA - Summer Night City 😃
We used to call the city..... the "Concrete Jungle". I love to visit big cities but I have never wanted to live in a large city. BTW...... The sax is played by.... Bill Bergman.
Ok guys, I’m glad you waited til now to play this song, because I’m relatively new to your show. I loved Miami Vice, The Eagles and Glen Frey! It totally vibes with the show. By the way, being new to show, what is the issue with the Eagles?
The Eagles - or more specifically Don Henley - issues copyright strikes to almost everyone that uploads videos of their songs. A lot of channels have had to take down all their Eagles videos or risk losing their channel entirely, and some HAVE lost their channels because of how many strikes and claims they got. I love the Eagles, but yeah, they are notorious for going after anyone that uses their music. It’s a shame.
This tune came out when the Eagles had run their course and everyone was off doing their solo thing. I was an enormous fan of "Miami Vice" in part because of the music. I was a big fan of Dan Fogelberg in the Eagles heyday and had an acquaintance who was an Eagles fan who bugged me over liking Foglelberg, until I pointed out that nearly every member of the Eagles had done back up vocals on one of his albums (Captured Angel, I think) The guy quickly changed his tune and bought the album, no pun intended. On that note, I'm guessing it's RU-vid copyright issues that keep you from doing Eagles stuff, maybe you could bypass that by doing something from that "Captured Angel..."
@@legman1476 Naturally I misremembered, it was the 1974 Joe Walsh-produced album "Souvenirs." There was also a Tribute album made after Fogelberg passed away. Several music artists made covers of Dan's songs, including the surviving Eagles. 1970s Disco Diva Donna Summer did a haunting cover of "Netherlands" that was surprisingly good.
Ryan you will get your fill of sax on this song! Five Guy fries are my favorite. I used to watch Miami Vice. He was good! Gene Simmons was also a bad guy in that show. You laughed when you said he was in Wiseguy.... That was a great show! Mike Ehrmantrout was a main character in that show.😊 That solo at the beginning - thought Ryan would have paused it. The One You Love by Glen Frey is also 🔥 and has 🎷! I was going to say you said "the " - I'm laughing cuz you'd get on Ty for that! That is why I love Chicago. I can go when I want but I like having community where I live. I used to visit friends and family who lived in Chicago and that was good. Ironically I am afraid of heights... The video painted the picture of the song. See now people saw your authentic reaction!!!! 😊 The solo was in the beginning.
You could re-run Miami Vice today and it would be jus' as big a hit. The episode with Tubbs walkin' with a guitar over his shoulder, singin' a song about Jesus, usin' a Jamaican accent... so smooth. 'You Belong to the City' is in the same episode as 'Smuggler's Blues'. Glen Frey ain't a bad actor.
the blocking policy by the Eagles is ultimately costing them relevancy - groups that they out sold back in the day, have turned the tables to hold up their sales as they don't block....if you can do individual members, don henley (boys of summer) and joe walsh (in the city)
You're describing it perfectly - 80s reverb. From 1980-1984, 80s production was awesome, the pinnacle of production. Then, they started adding reverb to the snare drum ( or drum machine in this case), and saturating the guitars. Thus, began the overproduction period 1985-1993. Kool and the Gang had a song called " fresh" from 1984, with PERFECT PRODUCTION, then some DJ remixed it just a year later, in 1985, and gave it that overproduction sound, completely ruining the song for me. That was when I started to notice that I didn't like how newer songs were sounding post 84. Maybe they thought a natural organic sound was too 70s? Bon Jovis " new jersey" is so overproduced, it actually ruins the music for me. So many albums that came out during that time, were ruined by overproduction. I like the songs, they just get ruined by the mix.i love this song sooooo much, I can ignore the snare drum sound. I grew up in the 80s, but I prefer the 70s. This song, however, makes me nostalgic for the 80s. I love everything about it
So after the Eagles broke up, I saw Glenn and Joe Walsh together. Joe was out of his mind drunk and stoned on I’m not sure what but most like it a combo of a few things. And it was the early 80’s so that says a lot because it was the norm for many. Glenn kept trying to keep Joe focused. Joe fell off a stool many times throughout the night. Dropped his guitar, forgot lyrics etc. It was a disaster but we didn’t care because we really thought the Eagles were done for. I’m still happy I saw the show. I saw the Eagles in 1978 and then after they reunited and Joe was sober by then.
I saw the Eagles for the Hell Freezes Over tour. Joe Walsh was in rough shape that night too. Between songs, he would mumble into the microphone, then crack up laughing. He still manages to pull himself together when he would sing though. Pretty sad actually thinking about all the years of that going on.
Hi guys! Hear this song--> This *City* Never Sleeps. Everyone who bought Eurythmics albums knows it. Sorry, no sax, but lots of atmosphere. I love it more than this Glenn Frey song (which I also love). And be sure to listen for the production touches added and tucked in, by Dave Stewart. It's something for which he is famous, to those who developed their ears. Every reaction channel needs to hear more women, and Annie Lennox is creative in this song.
I think "Lily Was Here" borrows heavily from this one. You guys did a reaction video for that one earlier. For more Glenn Frey I recommend "The One You Love" which is a ballad but has a great sax line. "Smuggler's Blues" about the perils of drug running, also on a Miami Vice soundtrack. I enjoyed this clip, guys! Thanks.
