As it happened to a friend of mine, he outlanded on a day like that. The farmer comes, and didn't ask the usual "did you run out of wind?"; instead, he asked "with this day you outlanded?" He turned out to be a glider pilot.
Meget fin landing.
Did you read the description? That was during a championship. No passenger here, he's a co-pilot/navigator. Outlandings are common in this situation, because tasks are designed to be challenging, and fast times are not possible without some measured risk taking. Also: looking at that landscape: Good lanig fields all around.
Well, it's a Question of Personal Preference. I prefer landing "against the Grain" as well. When you land into a Deep Groove and you misjudge your Approach or the Crosswind or there is an irregularity in the Groove a Number of things can happen. Least Dangerous is that it just pulls the tire of the Rim. You can also bend the Landing Gear Kinematic or even sheer off the entire assembly. Or you get really unlucky and a Crosswind will Force your Wing Down and you can't get out of the Groove and have a Ground Loop with the Potential to twist off your tail. Against the Grain you really only have to worry about Wear on the Shock Absorbers.
Thanks! Interesting perspective. One of my fellow pilots remembered "don't land where the farmer won't take his tractor." She landed parallel to the furrows in a field that had (oddly) been plowed diagonally. After landing, she found out why - there was a barbed wire fence running diagonally across the field. Landing with furrows saved her life.
