Wow, in all my years on RU-vid, this has to now be my favourite video, it's so majestic and magical, thanks so much :o)

In my opinion this video is an excellent answer, on the question: Why we are glider pilots? It is one of the best videos i've ever seen about gliding.Congratulations Alberto. Well done !

Ciao Ferdi, mi fa piacere che il video ti sia piaciuto. Sono decollato dall'ACAO, Clcinate del Pesce (VA). è un aeroporto di volo a vela molto ben attrezzato e con tanti piloti sportivi. In pedemontana non lontani ci sono anche Alzate e Valbrembo. A Calcinate vola anche abitualmente Peter Artman (non so se si scrive così) che immagino tu conosca. Per maggiori info puoi guardare su acao.it ciao e spero di conoscerti, magari a calcinate in primavera...

Even though this particular glider has an engine in the fuselage, the pilot will always stay within reach of an outlanding field, which he will be able to find even without GPS. That means that you heave to learn every mountain peak, ridges and outlanding fields by heart and know how they look like from all angles and perspectives, with and without snow and either in the sunshine or cloud shadow. That's how it works.

@TheAconsoli Also, a Turning Point is a location from which you can safely return to your previous landing area or can proceed toward the next turning point with an intermediate landing area. The goal is to select good turning points that have acceptable landing areas nearby.

@dcd2b - You'd have to ask the pilot to be sure, but it looked to me like in both cases the pilot was flying fast to escape sinking air. This flight appears to have been conducted in ridge lift, close to terrain where the air is naturally quite turbulent. Combine that with high speed, and the ride gets very rough. (If you wear a baseball cap in a glider, make sure you cut off the little button on the top, lest you damage the canopy or your head.)

la temperatura esterna cala di circa 6°C ogni 1000 m di quota. Quindi se a terra ci sono 15 C° a 3000 m la temperatura è circa - 3°C Per il respiro è come essere in montagna alla stessa quota. Quindi oltre 3000 m dipende dal singolo e dall'allenamento. Comunque oltre i 4000 m si vola con l'ossigeno (nel video si vede quando indosso la cannula dell'ossigeno). Con l'aliante hanno volato ben oltre i 10.000 m di quota... ma per andare oltre gli 8000 m ci vuole preparazione e attrezzatura adeguate.

It can be all: thermal, ridge, wave, depending by the conditions. Thermal activity is often crucial also in mountain flying. And yes, with the correct basis of micrometeorology and with experience you can made reliable predictions. Yep, in some points he looks low to me too....but this was meant to be a record flight. And I'm a normal (paragliding) mountain pilot, while Alberto is among the best Italian pilots, so it's just a matter of perspectives :-) wish you good thermals and safe flights

Saying simpy: "Briliant!!!" Congrats! Can you say more about this flight? What direction do fly to 3:20? I assume that from 10:20 you are on the way back home from Petzen, yes? East part of flight seem to be more thermal than ridge/wave in the west. What was wind strenght during flight? Wind was from north I assume? Wonderfull. ciao bel video! ti vorrei chiedere 2-3 cose, fa molto freddo lassu a quell'altezza ? l'aria è un problema o non avverti la mancanza ? il sole scommetto che è molto forte vero ? inoltre se per pura ipotesi dovessi volare con l'aliante a quasi 7000 metri di quota (non so se qualcuno lo ha fatto gia) pensi che riusciresti a sopportare il freddo ? e l'aria ? a 7000 metri sarebbe un problema grosso o ancora riusciresti a reggere bene ? grazie !

scusa se continuo con le domande,ma sembri molto preparato, dici che sono andati oltre quota 10 000, è incredibile ! ma io ora mi chiedo l'aliante non rischia di congelare oltre 8-9000 metri ? mettiamo caso che il pilota regge in qualche modo anche ai -40 di 10000 metri ...ma l'aliante come fa a non congelare aeilirion, timone di coda etcetc ?? veramente non lo capisco. inoltre queste bombole che usate sono diverse da quelle che si usano per il mare , vero ? in cosa differenziano ? grazie !!

ok, i am flatland pilot, the highest "hill" in our area is 50 maybe 100 m... so i have no experience with mountains... can someone tell me how this works? i guess it is not thermalling. does he rely on ridge lift or wave? he seems to be very low above places which dont offer any fields for outlanding. is the lift so reliable and predictable that you can venture among the cliffs so low? it looks very scary...

The video is amazing, wish it was longer. Finding your way between the rocks must have been an achievement Anyone know what A/R, TP and OLC mean. HOw long did it take? Usually hate the music over videos but this music was pleasant.
