i can't believe gamester81 did a review of this thing. in hindsight the most unsafe thing about it all was bad parenting. don't pay attention to yer kids just shove plastic their way. we say how that turned out around 2010 with the neckbeard millenials they were all peter pans. even as gen x i knew pretty well how the "unsafe" baby boomers were in my development too.
One time I had a nightmare about that. I was at the Goodwill and I found the 2008 blue one. And then when I pressed the chest, all it played was "Three Blind Mice" over and over again. And then, the fire alarm in the store went off! So that was a weird dream!
I had a GloWorm when I was a tot. It was probably one of my favorite toys. I called it "Glowie". I'll never ferget Glowie. Thanx fer postin' and bringin' back a great memory!
Man that brings back memories. I used to sleep with a glow worm just like that when I was a little kid. Never tried to hit my brother with it or anything, guess I could've.
I had one that was in a blue outfit, ages and ages ago. Loved taking it to the bathroom at night because so long as I squeezed it, it was like a flashlight right there at arm's reach. These days, I sleep with a body pillow, but out of a force of habit I picked up from back then, with the glo worm, and compounded by having a cat that's hard to see in the dark, I keep a flashlight beside the bed.
The component in the head that arose suspicion of the product was a chemical known as a "phthalate" or "phthalic acid". Phthalates are commonly used to soften plastics, and to increase durability and flexibility of such products, and while phthalates are widely known and used in general household and industrial products, exposure to them can induce interference with normal brain function, due to the fact that they are endocrine disruptors, and also can be absorbed through the skin and inhaled.
I bought one for my son on ebay because I had one when I was little. I understand the plastic is hard but that's what made us tough... Kids now days need that lol
I bought one for my daughter the other day. Looks almost like the original that I had when I was a baby. The box says sold exclusively at walmart and since 1983
My baby sis had one of those! Another good one was the bath time dog with the towel fabric ears that shook his head from side to side via a lever at the back of his neck. Man, 80s were beastly for awesome toys!
Loved my glow worm. I'm so happy I found a modern version of this today for my kids. I gave it to my daughter at 4, then when my son was two and we were giving up pacifier she gave it to her little brother so she could get a new glow toy. My son now carrys his baby everywhere. He'll be 3 in February. The new version is not as hard btw.
Good ol' 80's, where the toys we played with could of killed us. Man, 30 years ago and still working. I def. remember them, would of been 6 years old in 1982, but I never had one. My cousins did, you know...the cousins who never got anything good as far as toys and video games, but for some reason they had this. They were the type of cousins who had an Atari 2600 when NES was popular, and they loved coming to my house, but I was pissed when one stole my Shredder from TMNT.
this toy was deffinately the equalizer between a big brother and little brother. . if the little brother got ahold of the Glo worm. . his stat points would deffinately go up 10plus. . . cause when you got clocked with the head on this thing. . fight was over. .LoL. . . great video; John. . thanks for the memories. .peace. . remembered tv commercials. Those white semi transpareng plastic innershells have sharp edges. It was very common back then in the production method with battery powered stuffed dolls
+maddawg_t Excellent question. I'm currently unaware on whether the chemicals pose the same threat to felines and cats as they do to humans. I leave it up to you to ponder.
+maddawg_t Phthalates are everywhere in our environment. They are usually found in household products that list "fragrance" as one of the ingredients. If you do wish to purchase a GloWorm for your cats I would advise against purchasing one from 2008 or earlier, because I'm more than certain that those contain phthalates inside their plastic faces. I assume that the chemicals were removed from the current GloWorms. Getting back to your question, though, whenever you find fragrance listed as an ingredient in a product, that usually signifies the presence of phthalates. I also have discerned that children's toys, and chew toys had phthalates removed from the plastic, due to their arising concern of people's security and safety. I do encourage you to purchase a GloWorm for your cats, but do make precise and careful decisions. If you need any more assistance, don't hesitate to ask!
I think my friends had some small plastic glow in the dark glo-worms in their bedroom.I remember being fascinated by the fact they glowed and being a child I never thought such things might be dangerous!.I don't think the things I remember were nightlights, but I don't really know.I think they had pyjamas on and pink bedcaps.
I had that exact same one as a kid... Really great memories. I actually saw some new ones at Target a couple weeks ago, I'm sure it just works off an LED and a watch battery now. Everything in the 80's took like 14 C or D batteries... Definitely don't miss that.
I had one of these. I had no idea there was a recall due to dangerous plastic. I remember the batter pack and head were quite hard. But I never got hurt or hurt anybody with it. But something that hard with such little padding wouldn't fly today. Kids today are made of glass.
I still have my daughters and it will be 39 this year. I also have my son's glo bug and that will be the same age. My problem is that I moved a couple of times and lost the inserts.
I had one from birth. It was purchased in 1982. I'm 40 now. A student my entire life. I dropped out of high school anyway. I blame the glow worm hahahahaha
The idea was you hugged them when you were scared and they would glow for you. Mine had a little shirt with a pack in the front that would play music if you squeezed it, you could take the shirt off via little velcro tabs in the back, most parents took them off because, well, who wants a music box going off all night in the kids bed. They were very little kid toys, I had mine from when I was like 2 years old all the way til I was I think 7 before my mom sold him at a flea-market. It was the kind of thing that kids who were too young to SMASH EACHOTHER with them would have in their cribs, you hugged it and it made light. The thing that was "harmful" in the glow worm's head was the hard rubber compound had a bit of lead in it, mostly I think the pigment in the eyes, but that wasn't really super harmful in the amount that was in there. But during the 80s there was a huge scare about lead in products, lead paint from the 60s/70s was causing issues and people freaked out over anything with lead in it at all. The trace amounts of lead likely weren't enough to cause any damage unless you burned it and huffed the smoke. C-size batteries were very very common in all kinds of toys of the 80s, I remember them being in like, everything I owned, that and D size batteries, I had legit a toybox just full of semi-alive batteries that i would cycle through the toys I wanted to play with lol. Glo worms were awesome, they helped us sleep as kids, those and all the weird rubber/plastic glow in the dark toys, and those little Chubbles there, the flat round faced dolls with the hood, you would blow an ear piercing moon shaped whistle and their eyes would light up and they would beep so you could find them... those were awesome too, though i'd always get that horrible whistle taken away and put on top of the fridge lol.
I have the same exact one right here as we speak for my daughter to use. Only difference is the yellow tassle was cut off of mine by my older brother out of jealousy lol
interesting, i'll have to research. I know that I had Entertech water guns as a kid, man ... those things alone were probably the reason toys guns are florescent orange these days. The entertech water guns looked like real guns.
Glo Worm needs a new battery Glo Worm needs a new battery Glo Worm needs a new battery Glo Worm needs some more juice (sorry, that was a song my dad made up for me and my sister whenever our Glo Worms' batteries died. I can't say much for mein sister, but I know I was attached to my Glo Worm for awhile)
I recently found out these are out again, so we just got one. I guess the head is harder but I didn't think about anyone harming themselves...gods the world is going insane, right? LOL. I can feel the battery box inside but like I guess it's padded enough. I mean any psycho kid could probably do something with it but yeah, many other toys are far harder...LOL. Great review. We just did ours and it plays music, I think it looks similar but it does sound different, tried to get one with the most old school look. It came out in 2018. Morticia
Yeah they have changed alot over the years, but i really did appreciate the throwback to the now 40 year old gloworm being sold today! I like how they redesigned it to look like the original, and even redesigned the box to look like the original lol
lol, "I turned out normal enough"?! Reviewing kids toys from decades ago on youtube?! I think that plastic was very toxic indeed. Wait a sec, I had one too.. shoot..
