In this video clip, David Held discusses political relationships and more specifically how democracy can reinvent global governance. Held talks about self-government and how this was the early form of democracy. I think one important aspect he mentioned was the dependency on small communities and the emergence of the nation-state. Eventually self-government takes a new form as liberal representative democracy, which have representatives that we vote for. They say that we can remove these elected representatives from power, but I find that hard to believe in our world today. Another problem is that they focus on the short-term problems and make short-term decisions because they might now be there for long. The biggest issue is the fact they are concerned with problems inside their borders not out. So, the big question Held raises is: Who deals with concerns across borders? Concerns like climate change or security regarding nuclear war. I believe that Held’s solution is that we need to have democratic authority on all levels of our multilayer/level world. David Held furthered my understanding on why making changes is so difficult. For one, the rise of developed nations has added more countries to the table when discussing global matters. Furthermore, more countries mean more negotiations and more difficulty coming to an agreement. Another reason it is so difficult is that we are dealing with very complex situations and problems. On top of that, we are living in a multipolar world. So, the complexity combined with the multipolarity makes it hard to make changes. The main point I got from this clip is that changing things is going to be extremely challenging.
David Held's idea about community and working together, not being selfish and we need these things brought to the forefront of how we communicate, and treat others. Politically speaking models of democracy needs to be reinvented with a local twist. Self government is an idea that comes out with enlightenment. There have been many self governing countries that have prospered. The people are happy, a sense of community is how they think about themselves. The communities will have to be able to rely upon them self before they are able to move toward self governance.
I agree what he said that because of rising of Asia and China, we have more voice and beyond border problem because of globalization are difficult to deal with. Even though it is true that having more voice makes thing difficult to reach agreement, I think it is also positive think. Because with more knowledge and opinion, we could have more choices to solve problems. However, in order to consider about others and try to gather as many voice as possible, it is an significant to have global competence. Held's stance and outlook on the way in which our global world could possibly look as a self-ran government similar to the ideologies and practices of the past are quite interesting. As globalization takes its course at more rapid pace than ever before our world, as a result, is becoming more interconnected. As issues cross transnational borders as Held explained with climate change and nuclear disaster the rulers of the world need to come together to not just protect their territory but the global individual. With states coming together tossing the idea of a dominant country or two "writing the rules", we will see a change into a more global government all with the focus on the individual rather than a territory. One point that the speaker made in which I found intriguing was the focus that yes we will be moving to a more global government, however, nation states will remain a concept. We need nation states to create and enforce policy to create a sane controlled world. Another concept in which Held included in his speech was the importance of cities in this movement. While cities are more progressive, I never thought of just cities contributing to globalization, I thought more in terms of just industrialized movements and countries in whole. This concept of cities and their societies and politicians being at the forefront of creating a more globalized and global government will now be a huge factor when i disscuss such topics in the future.

I have invited the students in my Global Studies course on Understanding Globalization at California State University Monterey Bay to watch David Held's TEDxTalk and comment on it here. In general, I believe it provides a very insightful, informative and forward-looking Western perspective on global governance, inter-state cooperation, democracy and contemporary global politics.
global governance has the same problems the Titanic had. All other large ships were built with several sections throughout the ship being totally enclosed off with walls that would keep any leaks that occurred contained in the single section that was damaged, leaving the other sections still buoyant and keeping the ship afloat. The Titanic did not build the walls completely to the top, sealing each section off but left an opening there so when one section was damaged and water rushed in the water was allowed to also fill the remaining sections. Had they simply sealed off each section it wouldn't have sunk. Having a single financial or government controlling all nations is the Titanic version of "unsinkable" fallacy. With separate nations you have walls to stop the "leaking" that a nation might experience with the borders of the surrounding nations and containing the damage to the one nation. Without those borders for containment the damage of that nation's crash will take the other nations down with it since there's nothing to stop the leaking flowing through all the nations built into a single "ship".

International cooperation, more important than ever in our current world. We cannot move away from the fact that our fates are interconnected in more ways than one. The idea of self-governance is utopian but it is possible. Perhaps not in the sense that we eliminate leadership, but that we continue to fight for representation and fair treatment as we elect our leaders. Our ancestors who overthrew a monarchy and who dumped tea in Boston took strides to having their voices heard. Europeans in this current day seem to have a better understanding of a liberal democracy than in the United States of today. As the BRICS rise to power with a booming economy we should learn from our mistakes of environmental degradation and urge them to regulate emissions for the sake of the planet. We the younger generations will deal with problems of past generations and our voices need to be heard. If we care enough about issues like climate change we need to push forward with regulation and stricter policy. We have to begin painting our fresco to ensure we have a goal and end up in the planet we see fit with good global governance and not solely devastated through conflict.
Interesting, that the Bible says about it. Prophet Jeremiah wrote: "I well know, O Jehovah, that man’s way does not belong to him. It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step" (Jeremiah 10:23). It means, humans were not created to rule themselves. They do a poor job of governing other people and solving their problems. Britannica Academic notes that individual governments seem unable to “handle the universal enemies of poverty, hunger, disease, natural disaster, and war or other violence.” It then continues: “Some . . . believe that only a form of world government can make decisive headway against those evils.” However, even if all human governments united, the world would still be ruled by IMPERFECT humans who are unable to overcome the difficulties mentioned above. God’s Kingdom - a world government that rules from heaven over a righteous human society - is the only government that has the power to solve all global problems permanently. God has appointed Jesus Christ to rule over the earth. Unlike so many rulers today, PERFECT Jesus will have the interests of his subjects at heart. His rulership will be based on love, and he will be a kind, merciful, and fair King (Isaiah 11:4).
Unfortunately human instincts on isolationism and tribalism that have been with us for thousands of years are now letting us down and the global issues of climate change and nuclear war and AI are not going to be solved with isolationism and retreat if the world can’t come together now then we risk throwing away centuries of progress and the people who will have to pick up the pieces will be you’re children and grandchildren think about it
Hey, my teacher invited me to watch and comment on this vidoe. I don't know that much about politics in general, so iI was a bit confused, and as Cindy says, also cunfused after watching the video. I kind of agree that we need a global governance, because we are facing problems that we need to solve together, not as nations or states, but all of us toghether as citizents of the earth.
World goverment is only power and control. It is a dark time for all the humans around the world. When all the things are connected, no chance anymore. No freedom and privacy anymore. Demoracy will be dead.
