On this episode of Global National: With his visit to Canada underway, Pope Francis delivered his long-sought apology to Indigenous communities for the atrocities committed at the country's residential schools. Heather Yourex-West reports on the raw emotions of some community members and what Indigenous leaders shared with the pontiff in return.
Residential school survivors are reflecting on the Pope's arrival with mixed feelings. Neetu Garcha speaks with survivors of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School on the years of anguish they endured and why some feel the pope's long-sought apology comes too late.
Plus, RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki and Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair have testified before a House of Commons committee that they did not interfere in the Nova Scotia massacre investigation. Ross Lord explains how the pair denies claims they pressured investigators to help push forward a new firearms ban.
President and CEO of Rogers Communications Tony Staffieri has testified before a Parliamentary committee about the telecom giant's crippling network outage. Shallima Maharaj looks at how Staffieri answered a question about telecom competition and how the government is promising to prevent another failure in the future.

No matter how we, as commentators feel, the importance lies in how the First Nations people feel. Clearly many were deeply moved, and yes this is only the start. Some form of reparation must be made. That said there were other churches involved, not least Anglicans. By sheer force of numbers Catholics have borne the brunt, but lets not forget the others. Kevin Annett, the United Church minister who began the exposure, also deserves an apology.

It is time for the Indigenous People to apologize!!! In 1649, Brébeuf and another missionary were captured when an Iroquois raid took over a Huron village (referred to in French as St. Louis). Together with Huron captives, the missionaries were ritually tortured and killed on 16 March 1649. Brébeuf was beatified in 1925 and among eight Jesuit missionaries canonized as saints in the Catholic Church in 1930. They are not innocent!!!!

I worked with an indigenous woman a few years ago. She left the reserve and was putting herself through school. She refused the money offered for her time in residential school as she told me that people don’t heal if they won’t move on. She also told me about the sexual abuse in her home at the hands of family. She said she got sick of the drugs and alcohol ruling her life and decided to do something about it. The takeaway? If you really want to change, you will.

You should follow what ever religion you feel is correct but don’t try to justify what happened in history. The carhop church and missionaries have a dark history. They use to give blankets to the native people which contained the virus that destroyed many of them without war. @maryannemelenka9250
@maryannemelenka9250 Год назад
It was powerful and touching. Some people say it’s not enough! What can we do we can’t change past sadly. But move forward see that thst never happens again. That’s every one’s responsibility now not just the church. Pope was humble and sincere, a pope finally stepped up. Why other popes didn’t o don’t know, may have been denial that this happened or a type of panic. I’m not native, but I feel compassion for native’s and all abuse victims world wide. Forgiveness is important now. Churc took a first step. They will live up to their word. There will be strict regulations regarding priests with children, and other issues. Hopefully for future no more residential abuse, in other institution, boy and Girl Scouts , school, sports etc. at least abuse is out in open. Sadly abuse will not stop in some situations, homefront, school bullying, mental heath issues. Society as a whole as community is responsible not just church, individual s knew what was going on looked the other way. That includes non clergy. Some won’t forgive. The popes visit won’t help. But they won’t heal if they don’t at least see the pope made a sincere effort. When he’s gone, the next pope hopefully will know he has to carrry burden of church s shame. And try to redeem it. I don’t believe all clergy are evil, the ones who did these atrocities, some were sadistic evil beasts, some were abused them selves, some were apathetic these were ones who didn’t speak out, as well as law enforcement, government, child welfare. I still have faith in those dedicated genuinely to their faith. I’m sure all of them sinned too before because priests , not just abuse of others, either gambling, alcohol, carousing. I don’t want a perfect priest, except in abuse cases, though many priests that never abused are still strict in their catholic teaching, and that’s ok, have a right to their principles even if we don’t agree. Pope Benedict had a difficult time dealing with this issue, so it was good he stepped down. But I also hope people know abuse happened everywhere, not just church., the home has to be today really looked at. With these mass shootings we need to find out the background of the home, or foster home. Welfare of a child should come first. Invasion of privacy goes out the window when parents child goes on shooting rampage. Even if they were best parents. There is still a bad seed. That two year black boy who was killed in states by mother and her boyfriend , little boy had three siblings, a perfect example. Social services failed, government failed, courts failed, mental health facilities failed. So I believe it is a society thing. Even if church takes the right path, in reporting abuse, pressing charges, excommunicate, compensation, sadly there still maybe abuses , of all races. But other institutions too. It’s not going to go away. Bullying has to stop at school, teachers have to be in tune to a troubled child and seek out help, same with other places. I’m proud of Pope Francis, this was a long time coming for natives, and it did bring out a lot of pain and anger for many. usually I’m sorry too commonly used, insincere. Maybe forced apology. But today “ those words “ I’m sorry” were powerful words, used the way they should be used, with genuine sincerely, humility, and compassion. When I saw pope at graves of victims, the look in his eyes while praying said it all. The reality finally hit, this did happen. I saw the pain in his face. I was touched by that, most of people there appreciated popes appearance, treated the pope with great respect, with the headdress usually reserved for chiefs, that was a great honour. These people could have flung swear words, thrown things , heckled but they didn’t. They listened. Give pope his time to speak. Very graceful today on both sides. Natives I’m sure are tired of bitterness and hate, this visit will hopefully help them heal , and for those who are not ready to forgive lead them on the path there. I’m sure the pope now understands even more their anger, and knows some may not ever get out of that bitterness. But pray er, and hopefully support of loved ones will at least lessen it a bit. It will take time. Pope can’t work miracles, but today he started the process. The next pope will have to adhere to Pope Francis and the churches policies. It may not be perfect in coming years, people will have to patiently wait for future justice to be done. But like anything an accussed person, even a priest has a right to a trial, a hearing, before he is condemned. Even if evidence overwhelmingly, still have to let courts decide , and not the media. Yelling journalism came out in full force this year, in casting stones, judging, condemning , others. Due process is for everyone. But today was a beautiful ceremony, tomorrow a mass, , 63,OOO people. So people still believe I’m the holy father

@@DHARMYOGCOM I can as easily claim that you avoid Abrahamic religions for same reason. Your just making general assumptions that can be true towards any religion. Sorry but it doesn't matter which religion you think is better none of them match up with science. Science is something which uses objective studies with control group to prove a hypothesis. Try proving reincarnation using science. Science is not about spirituality so sorry Dharmic religions would not qualify either. Meditation alone is perhaps something that has physical benefits but anyone can do meditation without joining Dharmic religions. It's a form of mental exercise applied by all different cultures. The Abrahamic religions aren't responsible for what happened to Aboriginals in North/South/Central America. It was part of colonialism which spread to those continents. The Catholic church believed they could convert all the natives & that way there would be assimilation between the peoples. Have to keep in mind as well 90% of Native Americans died due to small pox, measles, influenza, & other diseases that were foreign to them & they didn't have the immune system to counter these illnesses. Another point is that there was a clash of two opposing civilizations. The European who were perhaps most advanced & knowledgeable vs the Native Americans who were one of the least advanced civilizations not unlike the African people who didn't want to change their primitive way of living off the land.

"We're still here.. We are not going anywhere." ~ Native Americans 🤔 May I ask if you care to know the fact that mega genocide of indigenous Native Americans population in their motherland, the Continent of America before European Colonizers arrived was around 15 millions, while European population in their motherland, Continent of Europe was around 25 millions. Today, Native Americans population in their motherland is 15 million, while the European population, in the Continent of America + Europe, is a staggering 'TWO BILLIONS'! For instance, 200 years ago in the USA, around 3 million Germans came, and now there are 65 millions German-Americans; while 150 years ago, around 2 millions Irish came, and now there are 45 million Irish-Americans. While 500 years ago there were estimated to be 5 to 6 millions indigenous Native Americans in the USA, before Christopher Columbus arrived, today there are only around 2 million indigenous Native Americans survived. Imagine this scenario, if Native American people cross the Atlantic, invade and Colonize Europe, and slaughter most Europeans, and put the remaining populations in tiny reservations, for 500 long years. How would Europeans feel about it? Think about it. All they need is their beloved motherland back, the lands that their ancestors' forebears had lived through thick and thin, endured through hardships and all for generations. Besides, indigenous Native Americans in Colonized lands of Anglo British, Spaniard and others are more of the same. Kill the indigenous Natives and whoever is left, marginalize them and create artificial poverty, once that poverty becomes crime and drinking, the media points to the poor and blames them to continue to stigmatize the 'other' community, scumbags, etc. Amazing fact that Indigenous Natives had built such great civilizations as Mayan, Inca and Aztec without outside help, and all from scratch, and all on their own, since they had been cut off from the rest of the world for twenty thousand years. In other words, they actually are great and proud people. Imagine what it would be like today if Native Americans had possessed some sort of nuclear weapons to defend themselves, and their beloved motherlands from invaders Colonizers? The answer is they would still have their own beloved motherlands, plus their population comparable to that of the European population. In my humble opinion, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return it to rightful owners Native American people. Remember, notorious global cardinal crimes the West has committed, and benefited a great deals, such as Slavery & Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is notorious Colonization still lingering on, may I ask? 🤔 [For God's honest truths, pls read the insightful multi-pages 'Ole Fella' comment at, "China-US tensions: A closer look at the Five-Eyes intelligence partnership / CGTN"]

This apology is not enough....and an exceptionally late start if it could even be considered that. But for the Church and Christians in general there will be no further action. @rodylermglez Год назад
There's more nuance on what he said than what the translation conveyed. For example, "también estoy profundamente dolido" is more than just "I am sorry" but it also means "I am deeply grieving with you / I feel your pain". He wrote that with his more sincere words, although I do acknowledge that with these matters words will simply fail, no matter the language. And yet, some languages will start but babbling what's in the heart, so it's the best we all got for now. This is why all languages should be allowed, why it was so abhorrent that many tongues were silenced in schools due to colonialist practices, for Spanish was also the language of colonialism in America. That do I understand the outrage. Languages are a terrible imposed barrier for our mutual understanding, but it's also a source of richness, for what fails to be conveyed in one can be said in another. Whenever one of these tongues are lost and suppressed, humanity loses on the whole. No more. I work in education and you have my word that this won't happen in any school I'll work with ever again. Honestly, if you are outraged against Pope Francis words and presence on the behalf of these indigenous people while not being indigenous yourself, this is not for justice as you claim but for your egotistical agenda and you should check your privilege. If you are of the First Nations and feel anger due to his words, I sincerely do acknowledge your feelings and hurting... Please, don't lose yourself in these; don't embrace hate in your heart, look for help, and know that plenty of people around the world supports you. @@leejbcoffin @Mikeunt probably refers to the hypothesis that the mass graves found in residential school grounds are from epidemic and pandemic causes, not literal genocide. But he, as many more I've seen, is probably not understanding the difference between that and "cultural genocide", which rather refer to a systematic erasure of a culture through, for example, not allowing people talk their mother tongue inside an educational institution. It just happens that maybe that term is too strong for Canadian sensibilities, even though that's what's used in academia to describe what happened with the residential schools' program. Regardless, what happened here is that these children WERE under the care of church members, and thus Pope Francis laments they should had been properly better taken care of. That's what the church, through his word and before God, is sorrowful about today, and in my opinion, calling for memory and not forgetfulness is a good start to see that something like this never happens again.

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others. But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted". YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FOR YOURSELF AN IMAGE in the form of anything, in Heaven above or in the Earth beneath, or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them, or worship them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents, up to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me, and keep my commandments. If my people who are called by my name, humble themselves and pray, AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS, I will hear from Heaven, will forgive their sins, and will heal their land. AND WHEN YOU PRAY DO NOT BE LIKE THE HYPOCRITES, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners, to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. BUT WHEN YOU PRAY, GO INTO YOUR ROOM, close the door, and pray to your Father who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need, before you ask him. This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. "Matthew 5-7 NIV Bible Gateway", we can use google search. These are the teachings, The Righteousness of our Lord Jesus Christ our God. REPENT, and start doing what is right. If you abide my teachings, you are really my disciples; then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in Truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. GOD IS SPIRIT, so his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in Truth. In the New Heaven and the New Earth, only Righteousness dwells. Maybe all this time would be better spent getting jobs for Natives so they can leave the reserves and pay taxes like the Canadians that built this country.

Remember, notorious centuries-long global cardinal crimes that the Christian Anglo West had committed, and benefited a great deals, such as Slavery & Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is notorious Colonization still lingering on, may I ask? The Continents of America are NOT a new world! Why not let Native Americans have Europe, since Europeans have had both North & South America Continents; a fair deal? Remember the saying, "A Man's Got To Do, What A Man's Got To Do".

@@rottenrobbie8466 You asked: "May I ask why not let Native Americans have Europe, since Europeans have had both North/South America Continents already; a fair deal? Remember the saying, "You can't have your cake and eat it too" and "A man's gotta do, what a man's gotta do". The truth of the matter is that indigenous Native People would forever be the subject of scapegoat, and victimized by the Colonizers of their lands, as long as they occupy those vast rich bountiful lands in order to justify their occupation. In other words, the Colonizers are 'Living in Denial'/ 'Living in Sin'. Enough said. 🤔

Apology is the start and some say these are empty words, imo as long as Church and Indigenous ppl forge as an ally and march on to the future together, that will be the best for all. We need not to make more enemy but more ally to strengthen the bond so all the raising extremists will have no chance to control over people.

It’s shocking what happened to these people. Very sad but it’s good that this is highlighted so people know and learn from it.

Is he a Jew or of Jewish descent, pope Francis, ? In respect to his visit here in Canada and an apology to the indigenous people , are the indigenous people members of the catholic church ?, in this mass celebrated in Edmonton? . Is this sorry or a thank you.? Pope Francis the pontiff in the Vatican in Rome Italy, when we speak of catholics and the role of the church in this apology, are these indigenous people which has been seeking an apology by the church in the Residencial school ", are they indigenous Jews ?"✡ " Are these people are of indigenous Jewish decent? ,from Quèbec to Edmonton 🇨🇦 Canada. Why his visit come at this present time July 24, 2022?, when there is a war going on between 🇺🇦 Ukraine and Russia 🇷🇺. Why at an old age 84/88 years with pale health will risk making this trip possible?. This little transport he go on by look the same that transported me back 38 years ago to the near by health clinic when I give birth to my daughter at home and alone, November 1984 , it was all deep forest green.
