Decades of unnatural captivity have left their mark on Mara, and in this week’s episode we talk in detail about elephant poop! From the differences in consistency of African and Asian elephant poop, to size and smell, all topics are on the table.
Kat and Scott explain how Mara’s stool was not normal for an Asian elephant, showing that she had GI (gastro intestinal) issues going on. Scott recalls the amazement of Mara’s zoo care team when noticing a change in her digestions in just a few days after arriving at the sanctuary. Not only did Mara’s physical health begin to improve, her mental health did as well. Her stereotypic swaying stopped almost immediately and with her new friend, Rana, at her side, Kat and Scott recollect how Mara’s first days and months of discovery in her new home, Elephant Sanctuary Brazil.

Poop. Years ago I never imagined I would take such an interest in Elephant poop! But these days it's a normal part of conversation with my Elephant friends. Mara desperately needed to be here as evidenced by the way she instantly embraced Sanctuary life. What a relief for her to get rid of all the nasty, dead and dirty skin. She needed a LOT of help to get rid of all that. Not the most pleasant of tasks but that must have been so uncomfortable for her. Lovely to hear about reactions and also how Mara eventually accepted the birds and became comfortable enough to wander around with a bird happily perched on her body.😊 Of course she would be distracted and irritated with the birds in captivity but after a while in a natural environment they became the norm as they would have if she'd always been free. How lovely to see the owls too - very sweet. Thank you Nadia, Kat and Scott for another great "Rumble" 💖🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘💖😊🙏

Super interesting podcast again thank you! I would love to see the elephant poop composting down and what you do with it! Very envious of all the compost you must have!!! (I’m a grower of veg fruits and flowers and there’s never enough compost!!) I hope it helps grow fruits and other produce? Do you collect it all up or leave some where it’s dropped? Mara’s build up of old skin sounds so irritating efor her, luckily she didn’t get some serious infection, and her demand that you see to it was funny!! And smart

We do use the compost on some small things we grow, but we don't have the ability to grow a full garden. And we pick up all of the poop.

Another great episode! I love the video with the podcast. I was wondering if the two elephants in the pond are Rana (using her trunk as a periscope) and Mara? And the other duos? 😊

You'd have to give us a time code to look and see which elephant you're talking about.
