Global Voices, Local Choices brings diverse cultures and perspectives into Northern Ireland’s local and national museums. It is empowering people to make choices relating to World Cultures collections and how they are interpreted. This is a partnership between National Museums NI, the African Caribbean Support Organisation NI, and the Northern Ireland Museums Council. It was funded by the Museums Association Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund.
This short film features one of the six groups involved in ‘Global Voices, Local Choices’ discussing objects from their culture. This group of Starling Collective members are from different parts of Africa and living in Belfast. Through a series of 6 workshops they explored issues of survival and comfort, nomadic life, as well as the diverse range of cultures, languages and identities in Africa. They also told of their various experiences of settling in Northern Ireland. This resulted in a creative display at the Ulster Museum.
