Gloria Estefan is a Cuban-born American singer, songwriter, actress and entrepreneur. She is in the top 100 best selling music artists with over 100 million albums sold! She has won seven Grammy Awards and is the most successful crossover performer in Latin music to date.Her family fled to Miami as a result of the Cuban Revolution. In Miami Gloria became romantically involved with the Miami Sound Machine's band leader, Emilio Estefan in 1976. As she later revealed, "he was my first and only boyfriend." She and Emilio married on September 1, 1978.Tours, awards, fame, fortune and good luck soon followed in a steady stream. That is until the morning of March 20, 1990. As Gloria slept in her tour bus which had stopped along a Pennsylvania Interstate highway, a speeding semi-truck smashed into it from behind. She knew immediately that her back was broken. A delicate surgery was performed that required two 8-inch titanium rods to be placed on either side of her spine. The operation was a success. She needed 400 stitches to close the 14-inch incision. But within one year of the accident she was performing on stage again.Estefan's songs are universally recognized.
