Gluconeogenesis Pathway lesson: An In-Depth Overview of Required Enzymes, Co-Factors and Precursors.
Hey everyone! In this lesson you will learn about the gluconeogenesis pathway, including an in-depth overview of the pathway, where gluconeogenesis in the body, and what types of nutrient precursors can be used to synthesize glucose.
What is gluconeogenesis? Gluconeogenesis is not simply the reverse of glycolysis; gluconeogenesis requires specialized enzymes, which you will learn about in this lesson. You will also learn about how many ATP are required for the pathway, and how glycerol, lactate and various amino acids can be converted to glucose.
I am always looking for advice on how to improve my videos - any and all help would be greatly appreciated :) And as always, if you need help with any concepts, please don't hesitate to ask - I'll try my best to help you :)

Amazing video altogether but, could you explain how does glyceraldehyde 3 phosphate (3 carbon) get converted to fructose 1,6 biphosphate?
@Tchotch_ke
@Tchotch_ke 2 года назад
By the enzyme triose phosphate isomerase. As these reactions are reversible the enzymes are same with glycolysis (but in reverse manner) except the three reactions where Hexokinase, phosphofructokinase 1 and pyruvate kinase are involved.
@sam-lj9lz
@sam-lj9lz 9 месяцев назад
@@Tchotch_ke this is old but u actually need aldolase to convert GAP into fructose 1,6-bisphosphate. the enzyme u mentioned is the one we use to turn DHAP into GAP (both in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis)

If I got it right it looks like glycerol has a shorter/easier path to glucose than amino acids (i.e. proteins) and lactate, does that mean that the body will favor glycerol (i.e. fat) during fasting to supply the body with glucose?

Brain can switch to burn fat only when leptin signal gets to it, otherwise only stuck burning glucose. Almost all brains have stuck the body in glucose burning mode. This is a crux for the proper understanding of fasting and starvation.

@btudrus
@btudrus Год назад
It depends on the state. There seems to be some adaptation going on with prolonged fasting (>4~7 days).
@btudrus
@btudrus Год назад
0:51 "Brain requires Glucose" -- this is not accurate. Brain requires glucose TO A DEGREE. But the brain is completely happy with a mix of ketone bodies and a some amount of glucose. The brain can even use other fuels like lactate very effectively as an additional fuel sources. Which means during fasting the brain is more than happy with about 2~3 mmol/l of blood sugar if the BHB levels are steadily above about 5~6 mmol/l.
