Blu Ridge Collies teaches the Speed Sew method of training puppy ears. This method was taught to me by Judy Stringer of Sealore Collies & Shelties in 1998. The puppy shown is almost 7 weeks old. (10/2010)
My beloved service dog is a Rough Coated Collie. He was from a very good breeder who could not show because he had flaws that would not allow him to be shown. They had thought of putting him to sleep, but decided to donate him to be trained instead. Even with all of the training, I still paid a lot of money for him. He has saved my life four times in three years, he is worth every penny.
Thanks. Our Sheltie breeder also uses Speed Sew, and little 14 wk old Mercy now has had her ears tipped and glued for a couple weeks. Collies and Shelties are both so beautiful! But beauty has a price!
Hi John, The collie standard says the ear should be tipped 1/4 down. Even though I have wonderful ears on my collies, I leave nothing to chance. As the puppy teeths the ears go up and down and could land wherever it wants. Beautiful ears really show off a beautiful expression. If you do not show, then it is not necessary...but I do encourage my companion buyers to do the same. I hope this explanation helps.
Thanks for this video I have an Aussie that needs help with his ears but idk if its to late to save them I'm new to this and didn't know that there was a chance his ear would stand up during teething
i have a rough collie of 4 months one of here ears started pricking up when she started teething, i want to show her in the future , would you suggest i do this? i cant get the glue you use as i live in the UK would a eye lash glue or wig glue do ? i don't want to hurt her.
Pretty common actually, because shelties should naturally have tipped ears but unfortunately some bad breeding has started to result in upright ears. Typically the cartilage doesn't set until they are close to 1 year old so this is the breeders way of ensuring they ears stay in show condition. It actually doesn't hurt the dog but it's annoying to the dog to be just held there. Typically you wouldn't need to do this for house pets because they don't need to conform to any judge.
How long do you leave them glued? and will they come back up eventually? If so , how do you prevent that from happening? Also thanks for the video.It was still helpful. Can you use Eyelash glue?
My husband and I are looking to obtain a rough coat to add to our home :-) We will not be showing, he will just be a companion. However I would like the ears to be tipped. Is this something I should have the breeder do before we get him? Or find a vet who will?
Excellent presentation. Unfortunately tipped ears do not breed true so we need to help our puppies have perfect ears to go with their pretty heads and nice movement. I encourage evenpet puppy owners to take pride in their puppies appearance..
You're entitled to your opinion, but you should make it an informed one. There is nothing "cruel" about tipping/training puppy ears, and if you'd had any direct experience with the practice, you would know this. There is no pain involved at any time, it is temporary, and the puppies couldn't care less one way or the other. How about putting braces on children's crooked teeth, is that also cruel? Now that can involve real discomfort, cost a fortune, and take years to complete.
