Gluttony: Society’s Most Acceptable Sin - 1 Corinthians

Overindulgence has become a hallmark of our modern American culture. Our bodies are constantly alive with conflicting desires and drives. The temptation to eat too much, drink too much, or indulge in any number of things is constant. And it is also trivialized. So what if a person eats a little too much? It’s his body! It’s her life! Or is it? How can we bring honor to God with our bodies? Is caring for them carnal, or is it a responsible activity of stewardship?
This teaching is from our series White Collar Sins with Skip Heitzig from Calvary Church.

What a timely message even right now in this season. Sin of gluttony where we have allowed everything, all things and destroyed the temple of God. It is something worth working on even in my life. Reminds me that I need to live a surrendered life before God and allow God be present in my life. I know that I have fallen many times in sin but I need to get back to a life of the Spirit.

I have a friend who chastised me for not attending church regularly but I did not point out to him that gluttony was also a sin. Fast forward 5 or 6 years, he ended up in the hospital and almost died. His heart and breathing stopped but fortunately was brought back with a defibrillator machine. After a triple bypass surgery and a couple of months of kidney dialysis, he is now battling colon cancer which may or may not be related to his obesity problem. He is having problems getting the chemotherapy he needs due to his weakened condition and things are not looking good. I wish this type of sermon was more common in our churches.

Wonderful sermon relevant to so many of us. Thank you. Of course emotional, mental and cultural influences must be addressed. However, I also think it's very important to speak on demonic oppression as well. There are spirits of addiction and specifically also spirits of gluttony that can influence over-indulgence. These spirits must be evicted through deliverance prayer and fasting. Don't rely on your own self-discipline to overcome this sin. Lean into Jesus and invite Him on your journey 🙏

I gave my testimony at church about a year ago about repenting from gluttony. I had contracted Covid and because of my obesity I didn't fair well. I wasn't hospitalized but my kidneys took a major hit. I needed to make a change and fast. I repented of gluttony and asked God to heal me if it was his will. After 6 months all my health issues had resolved. High cholesterol, fasting glucose of 113, and EGFR of 59.1 all reversed. I went on to lose some more weight and ended up at a BMI of 24 before God granted me pregnancy. What a great way to start off pregnancy. But I was not pregnant yet when I gave my testimony of being healed. I declared the fact that gluttony is a sin and it harms us. Now, looking back, I'm surprised I had the nerves to do that because there are a lot of people in my church who are obese...if not morbidly. I wish more Christians would understand the damage gluttony can do to their ability to serve others.

"The more I do as I please, the less I am pleased with what I do!" So. 1. "Say Yes!" Hunger for righteousness. 2 Say No! Like Daniel. Self control is a fruit of the spirit. 3. GO! So many outstanding points in this sermon. 👏 The Holy Spirit moved me to find this sermon, and I am so grateful that the pastor lays it all out with scripture and real talk. I have battled morbid obesity - and super morbid obesity (yes, that is a clinical term) for 40 years! Despite being bullied about it, being abused because of it, undergoing many surgeries, allowing it to deaden with my relationships with my husband and son, losing job opportunities, I continously chose sugar and food over God. That's not to say I didn't try willpower. I've tried just about every diet, joined a dozen gyms, and even lost hundreds of pounds, only to gain them all back. Twice! At 52, I have finally, finally surrendered. At 285 pounds, 2 replaced knees, I could barely get on my knees, but i was determined to do it. And i can now do it every morning! And so, today, I choose God over food, for all the reasons the pastor outlines. Notice he never mentions vanity... this is not about a goal weight, size, or body dimensions, but the love I have for Jesus, and the willingness to carry out God's plan for me. As a sugar and food addict, i must consciously make that surrender throughout the day, every day, as junk food is cheap and plentiful. (Side gripe: the fact that one large, good apple costs $1.80 while a loaf of white bread is $1 is unconscionable.)

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS SERMON! I was doing a Bible study the other night about Daniel ch 1 and we were talking about how we can honour God through what we eat. Someone pointed out gluttony and I realised that was something I am massively guilty of but never think about. For the past few days, the Holy Spirit has been encouraging me to try and find out more about what the Bible says about gluttony, as it is something that no one has ever talked to me about so I knew nothing about it. This sermon was so helpful to me in understanding what the Bible says about gluttony, why it is a sin, and how to address the issue. Thank you so much!

How hard it is for most Americans as we mostly eat out of boredom. Or eat for taste instead of sustenance. Or eat for muscular gains/shape, while a majority of the world starves. How rich our country is to have our poor be overweight, where signs of plumpness is richness. How rich our country is for our people to have the privilege to fast when we want to. I brought up gluttony is also over eating and eating things that are entering our body and the Donut's and snacks we brought to Bible study. Whew! I know that wasn't an easy sermon topic to speak on! I applaud your courage and your commitment to truth. Gluttony is so accepted in Christian circles, and that's troublesome because it does limit our capacity to serve God and be usable to Him. Also, it can create extra weight on our bodies, which negates the fruit of self-control that should be one of the hallmarks of a Christian. Overweight, out of shape Christians are not honoring God with their bodies.

Processed foods and processed sugar are very addictive. The food companies design there foods on purpose to be addictive. I was a food addict for most of my life. Until I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. (This is supposed to be incurable says the medical Doctors) Long story short. By cutting out the processed foods and processed sugar. I have dropped seven prescription drugs I was supposed to be on for life. Lost 40 pounds. And almost completely have my life back. It’s very difficult to make these changes for life. Although, in time if you stick with it. You will retrain your taste buds to not desire the junk food.

I recently read a book called Wheat Belly. I was very insightful about what you are talking about. It s by design.

I'm watching this years after the original sermon. I'm am addict freed from drugs and alcohol, unfortunately, I e picked up an addiction to food. I've noticed I'm an emotional eater. I've become so ashamed and embarrassed by how I look now. So embarrassed I stopped going to church because I don't want to be judged. I e tried to overcome this but I fail and I think it's because of my thinking. Vain and selfish!!! I desperately need and want God help! I need and want Him to change my way of thinking so I want to overcome this addiction because of Him and not me. I desperately want and need Him to do whatever He sees fit to make me stop! He freed me from heroin so I know He can free me from food. Please pray

Yep. It’s hypocritical how so many followers don’t speak on this sin nearly as much as some of the others.

One of the best sermons on gluttony I have heard - really made me think about my body needing to be used for God’s purposes and keeping it healthy is thanking Him for this gift. Thank you!

I need to hear this daily!!! And gluttony should be preached in the pulpit. My previous pastor used to brag about eating alot of Taco Bell food!!!!! A preacher should not be bragging if what he should be ashamed of

I don't think gluttony was popular to speak against back then, because many people were poor and practically starving... so filling up excessively whenever it was possible, was actually a prudent survival strategy

With Gluttony the image of self indulgance comes to mind, as well as the idea of financial gluttony and the indulgances that Martin Luther fought so hard against.
