@@ym276 I'm going off what Naka said. It isn't unlikely, however. Net worth websites literally just guess based off public assets, and he wouldn't have been earning at such a high level until the last year or two.

So, how does Hikaru make this much per year? He said he makes 224K. Im guessing some of that is through red bull. But I'm wondering how much of it is from tournament winnings, especially when you deduct global travel expenses, is chess at an IM or GM level profitable if you aren't sponsored?

@@Christoff070 I would imagine most of his earnings are not from tourney winnings. Sponsors probably pay a good chunk of the bills. He said $50k was from a single tourney, but there aren't many with those kind of cash prizes. Maybe winning a large amount of smaller events would supplement his income. I'd have to guess Red Bull and potentially even Chess.com are the primary sources.

@@Christoff070 licensing is usually the biggest earner - doing instructional videos, books etc. Sponsorship is another possibility.

My best rating yet was 1860 but i think players below 2400 - 2500 are nowhere near a good player.

Count Grishnackh I don’t know. I think there is a lot of natural ability needed, not just hard work. I don’t think I’d ever become an elite chess player. I have good memorization skills, so I could possible get really far in learning lines and such, but I’m not a very visual person or learner, so I don’t think any amount of hard work could get me to this level of playing.

Will IV neuro-plasticity is a thing. These elite chess players spend ~4hours + a day playing chess ever single day ever since they’re like 7. That’s equivalent to 1 year of chess 24/7 playtime every 6 years. People are underestimating the results of long term hard work too much these days. It’s also the case that it doesn’t pay off in a visible way until you pass a certain threshold of time spent and skills honed - threshold that very few people cross, whether it’s in games, music instruments, or academia.

His car philosophy is strong. I've used the same philosophy. Cars in the 35k mileage range are the sweet spot for value. I pay cash and haven't had a car payment since 2006.

@@robloxvids2233 Buying a used car is essentially giving away money, you are absolutely correct. Buying used cars is the way to go! New cars aren't worth it until you can pay in cash (by this I mean with no loans/debt)

The tires them selves, a full set, can range from $300 - $1200 for a full set, then people pay a $60 - $90 'labor' fee. Most of that money is simply the tires. I know of no places that charge $1000 to change a set of tires. Unless it's a fuckin Lambo.

If you own a BMW you need to go to specialized shop and get specialized gear and it costs a fortune. You can't just waltz in to any random shop like you could if you had owned a cheap car. That's what he's talking about.

@@makerl1fe388 I'm not quite sure what your beliefs are and what your point is. In my opinion, Hikaru Nakamura is grossly underpaid for his skill and talent. His earnings are only comparable to the culture he resides in and pays tax to. If we judge on issues like social usefulness and general respect, then it seems that doctors are way ahead on value for money. However, it is difficult to quantify the value of a chess player like Nakamura for promoting the logical and methodical thinking that chess fosters in all people, particularly young people. It's just like trying to put a clear value on things like music and art. Of course these things are very marketable and worth a lot of money. Chess is an intellectual niche that has little mainstream value and to the majority of observers, is just a pleasant intellectual pastime. I suggest that very few people realise that professional chess players exist.

I don't have a books to recommend but check out video lessons by gingerGM. Learn the London System and the Dutch. Review your games and you'll make it to 1500.
