Giving mechanics and the industry as a whole a good reputation again, one car at a time! Shops, dealers, even schools, need to start investing in or requiring good diagnostics curriculum for their employees. The industry changed over 30 years ago. Nowadays, the tools like scopes have gotten to a point where they should be a mandatory tool that mechanics need to learn. Along with simple DMM, testlighting, and backprobing diagnostic procedures. VERY little is mechanical anymore, it's a maze of electronics, electrical motors, valves, sensors, and modules; it has been for years! No wonder so many people no longer trust mechanics. Way too many parts cannon guys...let alone dealers out there, running up the bill on people. It's just not effective, let alone honest or fair to the customer.
@edwinlomonaco6754
@edwinlomonaco6754 5 месяцев назад
@appatula Agreed. The industry is in a catch 22. The real way you fix this is by implementing government regulation. Just like being a doctor. Any kind of licensed physician. But by the same token government intervention is the last thing you want from other perspectives. Someone like Ivan wouldn't exist. Because he would be considered practicing unlicensed medicine. But you've also got all these shops and techs, including stealerships, just under trained and not incentivised to care. There's no direct path to success for a young tech. And there's no accountability for shops. If you take a close look at healthcare you'll see that there's no accountability there either. Unfortunately I'm not sure I see a solution other than to just be good at what you do. And hope that you find a place that understands your worth and will pay you good for it. Or to start your own business like Ivan has.

Having experience, a scope, and knowing your test methods/waveforms really gives you a huge advantage over guessing. A proficient diagnostic technician has the ability to test and confirm a problem without having to pull anything major apart, at least 99% of the time. Having the customer stuck paying for the "parts cannon approach" is why mechanics have a bad reputation 9 times out of 10. It seems to be a culture that dealers and shade tree mechanics have created, which is what gives guys like this a very rewarding and well paying job. Moral of the story; It gives us good technicians (with a scope) x-ray vision in a way.

My buddies 15 Yukon 6.2l broke an intake valve spring on #6. I took off the valve cover and noticed the valve stem was a good 1/4” higher than the rest. The keepers were laying in the corner of the head. Took off the head to find the valve had dropped and gotten bent then the piston hit it again breaking the valve off and pushing it sideways into the intake valve port. The piston had a slight mark in it but was ok other than that. Turned the engine over to see that the piston came up to the deck at the same height as the rest of the cylinders so we took a chance with a good used head and that thing ran like a champ when we got done. I couldn’t believe it didn’t put a hole in that piston or something. He got SO lucky! Had that been my engine it would’ve certainly been toast for sure! Should’ve recorded it but I did get a couple of pics of the head. 😂

What you did was perfect diagnosing! When you zoomed on the valve springs you could actually see the broken spring before you rotated it. NICE! Hopefully the valve wasn't damaged and will now go the distance. Good One Mario!

Good info. I had one the other day that confirmed a compression issue with a relative comp test and it wouldn’t idle/stumbled and stalled. Customer didn’t want to go any further with diag so I wasn’t able to find out what the cause was. The intake valve skewing the maf screwing with the idle would make sense.

I did not follow 100% how he scoped the car, has Mario put out a vid where he focuses more on the scoping procedure, he referenced it I think in the video. You also hear on the crank that there is some kind of compression problem, but the analysis to get to the spring was what I would like to dig deeper into. Thanks for posting!

Great diag, Thanks for sharing! I appreciate you saying that you don't memorize firing orders. Why fill your your head up with stuff that you can look up in 5 minutes. I see Techs trying to diag without a diagram and taking forever because it's diff than they think. If your already paying for service info, do yourself a favor and use it! Sorry for the rant. 😀

We had a broken valve spring on an escalade with the 6.2L. It was an intake valve as well, it got so hot it melted the plenum and created such a bad vacuum leak. Kept setting an 02 sensor code. couldn't believe the damage it did to the plenum though.

I put a teaspoon of oil in the cylinder, if the pressure goes up it's the rings and if there is no change it's the valves.

Thanks for the quick response bro. I appreciate the honesty. I'm here in Brooklyn New York with nothing but scam artist everybody telling me everything from I need a new engine to I need new heads when I'm sure such is not the case because I did a compression test myself and the compression was good on all except for one cylinder which was still okay but not preferable. I know your channel is for the technician community, but I'm not a technician. I would like you to show where you actually connected your leads, and then explain the graphs on your screen in more detail. You are just assuming everyone understands the graphs already. I know this would add time to your videos, but I think it would attract more non-technician subscribers like me. That's what is so good about South Main Auto and Pine Hollow Auto RU-vid channels.
