This map actually has a predecessor, Union City. Same creator, but the environment is set in the more inner parts of the city itself rather than in the outskirts. You should check it out sometime.
Librarian: "Is that what I think it is?" Me: The peepshow/strip club? Librarian: "It will be so cool if that's what I think it is...." Me: I mean yeah, I gue- Librarian: "The particle effects are so cool!" Me: OH.
Definitely true from experience lol, but there's also the possibility for decent RP in some communities in GMod just as any other game; only problem of course is it's usually only in private communities
As a long-term rp player I'd say shitty parts of rp don't make up the majority of rp experience. Moments when you interrogate someone/open your own business/rob someone in rp are definitely worth the amount of morons you meet. Unforgettable and fun experience (especially when people plays along with you)
Really wish there could be an easier way to have an awesome RP experience, I feel like the only way you can make it entertaining is if you had like 50 friends that all liked RP and all could agree on rules without the need for power tripping mods
@@FranknKitty shitty mods I think are regional problem. I'm Russian and I play on russian rp servers and I didn't really have a problem with moderators, even if I did, I always de-moded them by recording their mistakes and sending them to the creator
The police chase he imagined would never have happened. They would say its fail RP you didnt let the police arrest you and perma ban you from the server
This reminds me of GTA 4's Liberty City. GTA 4 was detailed so much more nicely than GTA 5. It was so atmospheric and it was so cozy driving around at night.
Nah, completely disagree. GTA 5's map is so much better and more detailed than GTA 4's. Liberty City was an ugly, relatively small, colourless map while Los Santos is big, bright and colorful.
Imagine having a group of friends that uses a map like this to just hang out during your downtime. Meeting up in a diner or park to chat with VR headsets in the evening.
I was going to be like "why not just go to a real diner with your friends?" and then I remembered most of my friends are hundreds of miles away and also I haven't gone out to a place for fun in years and I don't intend to start
Me and my friend had a ton of fun on this map, I spawned a lethal necrotics zombie mod and we were both driving around the city trying to find eachother until we found each other in the neighborhood. We boarded up one of the houses, had a campfire, NPC citizens surviving with us too. But the zombies we agroed while driving around the city had followed us to our house and were breaking down the doors. So we got devoured.
It'd be really interesting to do a "zombie survival" type scenario where you actually slept and woke up in a safehouse while surrounded by some sort of threat. It'd have to be a very atmospherically appropriate map to work and I'm not sure how you'd make the sense of danger real, but it'd really intensify the comfy/creepy factor to find a safe, quiet place to sleep in a sea of danger. Probably unfeasible, but still a fun thought experiment.
This map actually works quite well for zombie RP, even with NPCs. There are plenty of high spaces, hidden rooms and interiors to fortify or to put supplies if you're the one designing it. Even a gun store and a clinic / hospital.
@@shushupyounaughtyminx4832 download background NPCs and bio annihilation alongside this and set the spawning to only zombies and this map comes to life
I would actually take THIS RP map any-day over the others (even the classic rp_Downtown_v2). Probably because it seems to have a LOT more variety, and more things to do or go see and explore.
Easiest way to deal with the problems that come from player-body collision, like floating over a bed, is to install OVR Advanced Settings. There's an option in there called playspace mover that allows you to do exactly what it says on the tin. Basically you'd lay down on the bed and be floating above it, and then you'd move your playspace to lower yourself onto the bed. As far as the game is concerned, you're still standing on top of it, but your point of view will be correct.
Imagine some day gmod VR supporting full body tracking, somehow making all of the interactions seamless, and just getting 100 volunteers to just act out simulated lives on the map
man ive been playing gmod for YEARS and while i dont usually explore new maps, ive just seen so so many. and like, gmod has fairly realistic textures and proportions but i have never seen anything this realistic in gmod before, like, any screenshot of this empty map could probably fool most people into thinking its a real place. just... light reflections on the street? the puddles, the smoke/steam, the clear wind direction, the way that pretty much every door has something behind it! its almost wasted on the fact that its a gmod map, because itll never be used to its full potential, but it being a gmod map is why its so impressive!
_Librarian, I would love to see you play someday with the VR mod and the background npc mod, to see how it would be for you to interact with a world that is not empty. And I let you know that I see you from Argentina, so you are even seen in other languages for your great content._ ✨
Agree. Another cool suggestion, by another RU-vid commenter ages back, was spawning in one hostile AI, apparently the path finding is usually pretty good when you do that on these maps. Imagine that on a map like gm_Krot... just knowing there is one hostile entity wandering around, somewhere, that you could run into at any moment.
I remember exploring this map a bit. Loved the gunshop's target range where it had a mini-game of sorts where you shoot targets as they come up. 23:54 There's a dedicated setting for enabling realistic fall damage. Which I wouldn't be surprised if that is also a command that a server can run to enable it too.
You were spot on. I was hoping you'd find one, this map has a LOT of hidden rooms behind walls activated by switches, or the classic bookcase. I believe it's the... Laundromat that even has a hidden bunker or sorts. There's also a very, very interesting easter egg hidden on the roof tops around the motel. Up on one of the highest roofs in the area there's some pills you can take to go... Well, just incase you do a return, i won't spoil it. But i will say the pills are only there in the night map, not the day one.
Aw dang i remember watching a youtuber called "Camodo Gaming" who would always do rp's in this map, usually they would run from a trevor henderson creature but they had some creative uses for some of the places here.I remember one of the warehouses being used as a headquarters for a towing company, the apartments being the home to one of the guys, the subway tracks being where one of the creatures met their demise by train, one of the stores being used as a gun shop, another one being used as a doughnut shop, and im pretty sure there was more that i forgot.I remember them using the alleyways and stores to their advantage many times, with them running from a monster and then ducking into a building or alleyway to lose them,or once when they were holed up in the apartment and they were forced to make a escape through the fire escape, and once when they fled to the waterfront and escaped in a boat, and another time where they set off a nuke and then floored it through the tunnel before the shockwave reached them,or yet another time when they used a alley to conceal the construction of their secret weapon which they then used against their enemy. Good Times.
@@StarmixAndKaiju1 it seems that he mostly does BeamNG Drive mods now with the gang, although, recently it would seem that he made a second channel solely for "Old Camodo" type content
Now this is MY kinda map! Even downtown rp or whatever you mentioned that you said you thought was big feels like a medium sized map to me. I get used to maps like that in a week or less and at that point know the ins and outs mostly. But even on that map I feel like it isn't big enough sometimes. This map however. I wish there was more water area to explore but other than that I would love to explore it when I get my PC fixed again. Finally a map that won't feel small?
The problem with this is that for an RP map you'd be connecting multiple servers to make this happen, which probably doesn't do good things to RP gamemode codebases. (Connecting maps together in singleplayer has been standard business since Half-Life.)
Anyone else think The Librarian was a little too excited about the peep show and then immediately feel like you were the one with their mind in the gutter when he innocently gushed about street grate fog?
This is one of my favorite videos from the Librarian yet, he is honestly so well spoken, every description he gives is so eloquent and precisely articulated...he really brings an environment to life. I love the fact that he holds the same views (and obsessio-er, interest) I do regarding the relationship between creepy and comfy, source games, urban exploring, and liminal space. I adore GMod RP maps, and I especially love GMod RP maps set in cities at night (my all time favorite is RP_Downpour...this one is near perfect, though. ...and I also love how he gets so excited over small details and overall immersion, I’m the same way in games.
This map is perfect for a Vampire Masquerade RPG, the atmosphere is that of a gothic night city and full of unsolved crimes and supernatural events to be explored. I would say more, that this map was specially made for this purpose, to play Vampire Masquerade.
Honestly, just discovered this channel with the haunted videos and I gotta say, it's really cool how well spoken you are. You seem like a really really awesome dude, definitely gonna subscribe.
I don't think these maps are made for 300 players to roleplay. I genuinely think that it is just a showcase, where 1 player (you) walk around, seeing how detailed the map is.
I am very grateful that you made a video on this map. This is my favorite map in the game. At least from RP maps. Perhaps this is because I used to live in a similar place (many years ago) As always, a great video!
45:24 Typically most RP servers have this addon where if you press like alt+e I think while looking at a flat surface you can sit down there and it's usually used for sitting in chairs and stuff. Heck, I use it in sandbox mode because it's neat to have. You can use it to sit on vehicles that don't have enough seats too.
man librarian having passionate and effortness on scheduling these videos are so overly wholesome, since hes having fun playing in vr while within maps like these
Imagine, waking up in vr, might take a sec to realize. But then you remember, you spawned zombies and npcs. Just waking up and seeing creatures of all sorts but you just never seem to remember how, when, and where they came from. The instinct it gives to your brain is to hide. The night makes it more ambient. More scare, your instinct is to hide, the trash can, the closet. Just think waking up on a pub server hearing guns, sirens, chatter. But you can’t even remember, it just flickers in your mind you know.
The librarian's commentary is so amazing you are the best youtuber i've found in so long, I haven't found anyone as cool as you since like 2016, You have Made my life, Thank you.
Reminds me of Cry of Fear, the place seems so normal yet isolating regardless, the creator did a great job at the map. The creator should definitely make more maps!
I really feel that this map needs Rik Schaffer’s music from Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. That was the prime Source-engine urban experience for me.
I was watching a video recently detailing how lighted building interiors, as seen from the outside, can be "faked" in Unreal Engine. Actually pretty complicated. One thing about this map as a whole, and many similar environments, is that the rooms and spaces are too big. And it's not just the absence of furniture.
Next time, if you want to visit one of these maps, and don't wanna feel alone. Install Background Npc and slib addon so it feels like you have citizens walkig around(with police, gangster, etc.)
This map feels very nostalgic to me. Something about late night cityscapes, especially with this style of buildings. I kinda wish the map could be updated to give some of the other buildings their own interiors, or that some of the current interiors got fleshed out a bit (Mainly the completely empty stores)
Librarian I have to thank you for covering this (and very many more) map because it's inspired me to get into blender and make my own cities/worlds and it's really exciting! I've also grown to appreciate the nuances of real life architecture and other man-made creations. It's pretty awesome.
44:39 Do you mean the double R diner or the roadhouse during the S3 credit scenes? I've actually seen some (liminal) places that resemble twin peaks locations in discord images quite often. Btw I liked how you reviewed the map as an online rp map in the process of getting spooked also.
Your excitement and fear in your videos brings back so many memories of how I used to look at these maps. You are really the perfect creepy-comfy reviewer, and with a beautiful touch of humor. Keep it up, but give yourself a rest when you need it.
40:18 the senation described I think of sometimes. It reminds me of that one backrooms level, level 69 which to me is one of the creepiest there is. You're supposed to wake up on an empty and extremely long highway, and flip your car over, quickly get back into the car, and hightail it out of there. You drive for hours, and even days on a dark highway, with the occasional hostile entity either being in the middle of the road, or running at your car from the darkness. The only lights are the highway lights, and if you leave your car for long enough you get picked up by hellish birds which circle above you constantly and pull you into the dark void above. One of the best levels in my opinion.
This is my favorite GMod map of all time, even to this day. The lighting, the textures, the intractability, THE FUCKING AMBIENCE! It's god damn magical.
Fun fact: In the hardware store near the one of the apartments, the shelve models are from the 2006 game, DeadRising, which also was one of the earliest models made for the game, and they can be seen at the first E3 2005/Xbox Summit trailer.
librarian have you ever considered vampire the masquerade? I feel like all the city scapes and set pieces combined with the crappy atmosphere is right up your alley.
I'll definitely look at it in some form! I don't know if I'll do a full playthrough, but there's an area I read about years ago that I'll want to have a look at.
@@TheLibrarianYT Ey thanks for replying! Yeah by all means I would love anything from that game, rp_southside just really reminded me of the first two hub sections of the game.
I'm not sure if you're interested, but when you talked about fall damage at 23:57, it reminded me that there's actually an option in GMOD to turn on realistic fall damage. If I remember right it's something you can toggle when starting a new game, and it makes it so that the distance you fall changes how much damage you take.
I used to make maps for Garry's Mod and Source games generally - I can't begin to imagine how long it took to make this. The level of detail, the moving doors and elevators, the perfect lighting and details are ALL added by hand, individually in Source. Even porting the sounds and textures from Max Payne must have been a mission. Genuinely the most impressive map I've seen.
If you're having trouble finding your way on a map, one thing I always do when exploring a new map is use the paint tool to mark the doors of buildings I've already been in.
I really enjoyed this. My relatives lived in Queens, and in 13, I performed at Havemyer Park, in Brooklyn. I just downloaded this mod. Very much looking forward to checking it out. Thanks for the video.
I'm so glad i came across your channel, i love your stuff. Your voice and narrations during these long videos are pleasing to listen to especially at work when i'm bored out of my mind at this computer all day.
Yo my dude, just wanted to thank you for the content, you have a nice a chill voice that really helps me fall sleep. Hope you keep growing, you deserve it.
This might sound dumb but I’m not kidding when I say that This video was so trippy that I felt dazed after watching. the water glimmering in the light of the neon signs, I can’t even imagine what it’s like in vr. I don’t play good but this level of detail was incredible. I’ve never seen a video game look this beautiful before. Side note, the sky box is so good it looks like an exp, orange part of the map.
