#НЕГНИПАТИК #Go_A #SHUM #EUROVISION2021
Ukraine will be presented with song #SHUM by #Go_A in Eurovision 2021. The lyrics of the song come from a traditional folk ritual of calling/inviting the spring during the pagan times. It is usually accompanied with circular dances and so-called "twining the Noise/SHUM". This genre is called VESNIANKA. The context behind this song involves a lot of nuances and symbolism concerned with the pagan believes and their idea of the spiritual life. The world was full of mysterious creatures in the eyes of pagans. Even the routine phenomena of nature were personalised as gods or spirits and, sometimes, granted a special symbolic meaning.
The plot: girls are dancing around and suddenly break the fur coat of the spirit Shum who was sleeping and keeping nature still during the winter. They make it come to their celebration and join them. They want to get control over it by braiding, plaiting and twining it with their movements. Thus, after many attempts, they ask it to twine itself and to spread out with beautiful greenery and flowers.

Here is my English translation of Шум (Shum) by Go_A.
Our SHUM [spring Noise] has a green fur coat!
Girls, dancing around, tore it out!
Sowing-blowing, sowing-blowing hemp plants!
Sowing-blowing, sowing-blowing the green ones!
Сome now! Braid it! Will we plait it!
Twining SHUM [the Noise], dancing it around!
Sowing-blowing, sowing-blowing hemp plants!
Sowing-blowing, sowing-blowing the green ones!
Hey master SHUM [Noise], twine yourself around!
In a green periwinkle, spread yourself out!
Sowing-blowing, sowing-blowing hemp plants!
Sowing-blowing, sowing-blowing the green ones!
Commentary:
SHUM / Šum - Slavic forest god/forest spirit; the name is associated with a particular NOISE or murmurs of the forest when nature awakens after a long winter sleep. Slavic people used to call any forest "noise", thus, making an assumption that there is a certain spirit among the trees who comes to live with greenery.
HEMPS - a traditional plant sown for domestic purposes.
TWINING SHUM - the ritual of dancing around and making a double circle to tame the spirit and unleash the power of spring.
