This grease plug (collar screw or screw plug) can easily fall out if loose and MOST PEOPLE DON'T EVEN KNOW IT'S MISSING!! BE WARNED that dirt and debris will mix with the grease inside the gear case to become gritty and cause wear and tear on the gears. This will cause your trimmer head to wear out prematurely. This applies to straight shaft weedeaters, trimmers and brush cutters.

It is amazing how many people miss this very important point by Not Reading the manual. This is such an important point when a commercial grade machine costs so much. My neighbor on an adjacent farm didn't even know that this grease point was so important. He burned out two gear heads and no body told him why. I have developed an easy fix to grease this hole. I get a grease zirk thread it into a standard faucet washer through the flat side, then the curved side of the washer seals against the greasing hole no matter what size. Just pump the grease through the head until it comes out clean.

Just my two cents: I put zerk/grease fittings on mine. Two to three pumps and done. Some of the newer trimmers don't even have a grease plug in the gear case. It's a solid mold. On one's like that, I tap em out for a zerk/grease fitting or a plug.

It's a great idea if everyday grease is ok for that application, but I don't know enough about grease to say if it's ok or not. Also, the threads may be different then typical grease fitting sizes; might have to drill and re-tap, possibly sending metal chips/shavings in there where they could damage the gears/bearings. I still like the idea though; maybe worth doing if done well.

BTW the 8 point Stihl blade works on small trees better than the blade thats shown here. The 8 points are also far enough apart that it can be sharpened easily for extended life. Works best at high RPM then wave it across the tree kinda quick. Ive cut many Japonica Honeysuckle bush trees up to about 2-3 inches diameter with this technique. Have to pull the root out as poisons do not penetrate the ground fast enough and the roots will either go down or lateral and it will start new growth.

Here's a question... how often should the head be topped up with grease (or flushed and re-greased)? Yes I HAVE topped it up a number of times in the last 23 years but maybe I can get another 23 years out of it. That would make me 88 years old then and I have my doubts if I'll be able to use the old gal by then. ;) Have a good one.

I've never lost the grease plug, but I have gone through a couple heads over the years, probably due to not greasing them. I now have the Stihl grease tube, and grease them at least once per season. It seems a little expensive for a small tube of grease, but it lasts for years, so it's not a big deal. And it's handy that it screws right into the grease plug fitting, so the convenience is well worth the cost. There are certainly cheaper ways of getting grease in there, but IMO, it's a great investment, because of the ease of use and how long it lasts for its purpose.

@@shawndubay4050 Thank-you very much Shawn! You're a gent! I measured the threads on my Echo strimmer and Stihl hedge trimmer. The Echo grease plug is M8 x 1.25, so that's easy to replace with a grease nipple. However the Stihl grease plug measured M11 x 1.5. Grease nipples aren't available in this size. So I'll buy an additional grease plug and drill, tap and loctite a grease nipple in it to grease the gear box, then replace the original grease plug. The M11 x 1.5 threw me at first. It's a bit of an odd ball size. I presume Stihl do this on purpose so you have to buy their expensive grease?
@shawndubay4050
@shawndubay4050 Год назад
@@deanmsimpson thank you and yes unfortunately. The drill and tap sounds like a great idea. Should work great. They used to put grease zerk fittings on the old green machine trimmers so as long as you don't go more than a maximum of four pumps of grease you should be good. The grease will circulate when the gearbox warms up and hit high rpms.

One should always be doing a once over of their equipment from time to time, it is part of owning small engine equipment maintenence. You can use medium strength blue loctite, removable with torque to ensure components don’t come loose in the application and there is a possibility of disassembling the components in the future. Comes in handy when there is vibration so that things don't loosen up and come loose.

I have a Stihl FS 240, when I switch over to the Stihl 3 point brush knife, should I adjust anything? Or should I just leave it where the settings are for the bump-feed string head? From various videos I have seen on RU-vid everyone makes the point of making sure your string is at full extension before making adjustments. Does the different weight of the brush knife make any difference? Thanks again, keep up the great work. All the best to you and yours.

Coarse threads like that shake loose easily. Loctite is the answer.

Maybe some blue thread locker to help keep it in?

In the Uk, the heads dont have a grease port anymore. They must want people to have to buy a new head.

Planned obsolescence. You'll go to buy a replacement head, it'll be out of stock with long back order. So you're forced to buy a new machine, all part of the plan😉

Can it be stripped cleaned and bearing(s) replaced ? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

@@pollywollydo yes it's doable but it's just as likely the gears would be stripped due to lack of good grease.

So why isn't that a fitting? Some people are saying that the grease needs to be topped up from time to time? Otherwise I would imagine you might want to Loctite it in if it's just supposed to be a closed system.

How do I go about the one that doesn’t have a grease plug? Do we just run to failure? Curious
