I like the idea of pulling the fridge to make extra interior space at camp. I could see doing something similar other gear stored in Aluboxes or Wolfpacks so one could pull them and store them under the truck or in the backseats with a double cab. so one could have a double bunk sleeping platform.
@takethetruck
@takethetruck 2 года назад
That's exactly what we do, keep 2-3 wolfpacks behind the fridge and pull them along with the fridge when stopped for more than a night. Works great, though the ARB Elements fridge when fully loaded is 80-90lbs so takes some 💪🏽

@@takethetruck I’ve been playing Tetris on a RAM 2500 double cab build similar to yours with the pop up camper and rear drawers. I think there might be enough room to build a platform inside the cab to tie down a fridge as well. So many options to look through! I really like your simple build ideas.

I keep coming back to GFC when it comes down to planning what I want to travel in a couple of years from now. And the GFCs campers are always in the running. Now if I can decide what vehicles get...Subaru or truck....🤔🤔
@takethetruck
@takethetruck 3 года назад
They really do make a great Camper & RTT. Subarus are great, but I will say - if you can swing a truck with high clearance it'll open up a whole other world of options as far as off-road access while traveling. Happy trails!

@@kevinnorwood7355 gotcha 👍🏼 we've just run into enough mild off-road trails/scenarios with amazing views (e.g. white rim trail in Moab) that we wouldn't have been nearly as comfortable doing with less ground clearance.

@takethetruck
@takethetruck 3 года назад
Thanks! Haven't had any issues with bugs yet, and we camped in some pretty buggy spots in MT & ID. We'll likely treat the tent fabric with Permethrin for good measure though. No complaints at all so far, definitely recommend the side entry option if you can swing it for the views, ventilation, and entry options. You'll have the latest hinge design that is 💪🏼 so that'll be really nice! Hoping to get those retrofitted next time we're up thier way 🤞🏼. Hang in there, the wait is definitely worth it!

Very inspiring build! Using it as a starting point for my Tacoma GFC bed storage. If you don't mind me asking, how did y'all secure the single drawer into the rig? Use the d-rings? Friction? Large screws in the bed floor? Any insight is appreciated!

Thanks Adam! We just let friction and tight tolerance to the front and rear of the bed hold it in place. Never had any issues with sliding in 80000+ miles of travel 👍🏼. Good luck with your build, and enjoy the GFC - it's a game changer for sure 🤙🏼

Thanksand thanks for watching! We liked the old setup too. We did look at RTT options, but our primary goal was to have a usable living space for longer bouts of inclement weather while traveling for weeks at a time. The GFC offered that solution in a design we liked, and felt it was worth the investment for our usage case.

Cool setup! I'm going to build something similar when I get my GFC later this year. Question: Can you store any bedding on the mattress when the tent is closed? I was thinking maybe a blanket would fit if it wasn't bunched up anywhere, but just wondering your experience. Appreciate the vid! Take it easy
@takethetruck
@takethetruck 3 года назад
Thanks! We store a two person Thermarest 20 degree down quilt and compressible pillows up there just fine - but our old Big Agnes two-person synthetic fill bag that doesn't compress as much didn't fit as well. Was worth the upgrade to down to have everything fit up there nicely. Hope this helps!

Did you end up making any updates on the mattress pads ? I find them to be pretty firm. Wondering what people might have done to fix that. Also did you put a wind fairing on ? I’m trying to find a good one for the GFC. Thanks! Great video.
@takethetruck
@takethetruck 3 года назад
Thanks! No mods to the mattress pads yet, we slept on it for a month straight on our last trip without issue - did take about 4 nights to adjust at first though. We do typically prefer a firm mattress though. We used a Yakima wind fairing mounted on a round bars over the cab on our last trip, but recently removed it to use the round bars up on the GFC and honestly can't tell the difference without it. Believe GFC makes a wind fairing for the front of the tent portion.

I'm thinking of doing a set-up pretty similar to yours. but I keep running into issues nearly maxing out my pay load capacity. Seems like you might be cutting it pretty close as well. Are you running over your GVWR? Or do you not worry about it as you probably have done a lot of suspension upgrades to make the ride smooth?
@takethetruck
@takethetruck 3 года назад
We run an Old Man Emu heavy suspension lift which is rated 500lbs over stock, and upgraded our front braking system as well - so we're not extremely concerned. We do run pretty close to GVWR, and it's always a struggle to stay light and to reduce weight when needed to stay under this figure for safety. The GFC is actually a good bit lighter than our old setup, which consisted of a fiberglass camper shell, roof rack, awning, and road shower mounted up top.
