theperpetualsig... - Every time I get down to the Low Country I try and make a stop and drive-thru The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. It’s home to a large variety of wildlife including ducks, geese, wading birds, shore birds and several threatened or endangered species as well including the American alligator, flatwoods salamander, bald eagle, wood stork, shortnose sturgeon and Florida manatee. The Refuge also provided nesting areas for wood ducks, great horned owls, osprey and swallow-tailed kites. What you’ll see when you visit depends upon the season.
There are several trails available for hiking that run anywhere from just under a mile to over 6 miles round trip. My favorite is Wildlife Drive which is a lazy 4 mile drive through the refuge. There are many opportunities to pull over and park and then walk around the different areas.
Every time I visit this wonderful place I see it differently but each time I come away refreshed. It is absolutely worth visiting the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. In fact I’d recommend you visit at least once in each of the seasons. You won’t be disappointed. #familytravel
