The biggest merit of this documentary is the highly condensed information it and yet, it is its biggets flaw. I ended up dizzy and confused , too much to take in within 50 min. The usual style of your documentaries, which I praise, is the "slow pace" and relaxing emotional experience the viewer get from them! Thanks a lot, anyway.

The word 'beautiful' is not enough to describe those villages, cities, castles etc.

I was fortunate to travel by train along the Rhein once in '91 and again in '98! It's majestic! If time and money permitted, a train journey where you got on and off for exploring the towns and villages along the way would be a trip to Germany by itself!

Great idea to dedicate a video to the Rhine river. Unfortunately, there’s a mistake in the segment about Basel. The second shot shows Zurich, which is not on the Rhine.

I would highly recommend reading 'The Rhine' by Ben Coates. It is an interesting book talking about his experiences and information about the regions of the Rhine. Apparently residents were encouraged to purchase home and business insurance in case flooding occurs, alongside an automated messaging service to warn citizens in advance.

You left out Neuss, one of the oldest German cities opposite to Düsseldorf, and Duisburg, the third biggest city at the Rhine with the biggest inland port in Europe, Ruhrort, where the Ruhr flows into the Rhine at Rheinorange. Before the Rhine reaches the Netherlands, there is the Lower Rhine region around Wesel.

Yes, it's true - there are still many beautiful places on the Rhine that we could have shown.

Dunno, although it is indeed beautiful, people have altered the natural flow and the surroundings over most of its length. So I'm missing its own way, its raw beauty.

The main reason those regions are rich, almost connecting the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, plus flat land on most of both sides. So it is not the work ethics, neither the superior cultures, that's XIX century romanticism. If that would be the case it comes after favorable conditions and an easy incentive to prosper.

Rule of law, institution building, technical innovation, Stable market economy, intellectual capital of people etc also matters. The USA only became the giant behemoth after European Settlers came, not due to indigenous tribes who lived there for 3000 years. Africa also has flat land, mineral resources but remains poorest region. All people inherently have 'potential' to develop skills and talent but to channelise that you need good institutions, laws for freedom and knowledge capital which translates into prosperity.

@@Kalinga_3 You are right, you need all that. But that doesn't have anything to do with freedom but with interest. And that is build by border disputes, treaties, wars, and common enemies. I am not saying what you say is not fundamental, it is, but it wouldn't have worked or happened without a favorable geography.

Learn about history! Israel declared its independence in 1948 in accordance with the UN Two-State Agreement, and only that half of Palestine that was promised to them. Arabs, sorry "Palestinians" could have done the same with their half. But one day later, all of its neighbours declared war on Israel - why? Because of its very existence. And that has never changed. Muslims are wannabe genocides, not Jews.
