If you've been following this channel, it should be apparent by now that I love vocal harmonies, and Go Your Own Way by @fleetwoodmac off their masterpiece Rumours, is right up there with Good Vibrations and Bohemian Rhapsody in that regard. Most of the songs I've covered involved adapting all-male vocals to a male-female vocal combo (myself and Olivia), so for a change I wanted to try a song that was originally written with dedicated male and female vocals (Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie).
Given its more straightforward instrumentation compared to the likes of Porcupine Tree, I initially thought this would be a cover with fewer tracks than the usual 100+ track monstrosities that my sessions turn into. This quickly turned out to be wrong, as I found that modernizing this 70s classic required many layers of chorus, delay and reverb for the vocals and guitars in order to make things sonically interesting and dense.
The key element of the song, the chorus vocals, also demanded special attention. I had Olivia and myself record our harmonies using two different microphones, a SM7B and AT2020, and had parallel compression, saturation, delay, reverb and chorus tracks to thicken everything up.
Overall, it's a fun and (comparatively) straightforward song that allowed me to sharpen my skills at mixing something with less crushing guitars, which I've come to find out can be more challenging because of all the sonic space that needs to be filled.
