A goal kick occurs when the entire ball passes over the end line, whether on the ground or in the air, having last touched a player of the offensive team.
Rule 1 for Goal Kick Rules Soccer - The ball must be stationary and can be kicked from any point within the 6-yard box, also known as the goal area.
Therefore, it does not have to be on the line.
Rule 2 for Soccer Goal Kick Rules - The goal kick can be taken by any player on the defending team.
Therefore, the goalkeeper does not have to be the one who takes it.
Rule 3 for Goal Kick Rules in Football - The ball is in play when it is kicked and clearly moves.
Simply stepping on the ball is not enough to be considered a touch.
Rule 4 for Goal Kick Rules Change - Opponents must be outside the 18-yard box (also known as the penalty area) until the ball is in play.
If any opponents are inside the penalty area because they did not have time to leave, the referee can allow play to continue.
There is a retake of the goal kick if an opposing player enters the penalty box too early.
However, if your team is the one taking the goal kick, you can have players in your own penalty area, which is a recent rule change.
Rule 5 for Goal Kick Soccer Rules - If the person who took the goal kick is also the person who next touches the ball, then an indirect free kick is awarded.
Fun Fact - A goal may be scored directly from a goal kick.
However, a goal can only be scored against the opposing team.
If the ball directly enters the kicker’s goal whether intentionally, or unintentionally, like on a really windy day, a corner kick is awarded.
Assuming you are at least a middle school age player or older, avoid always just booting the ball up the field for goal kicks.
Instead, pass the ball out of the backfield to maintain possession.
When you just kick the ball as far as you can, you give your teammates a 50/50 chance of winning the ball.
When you are trying to kick a goal kick far up the field, consider these things:
Tip 1 - Have a running start to the ball
This will allow you to get more power on the kick
Tip 2 - Use the bone of your foot
This is the hardest part of your foot and will allow you to get more power too.
Tip 3 - Strike low on the ball
This will allow the ball to go high into the air
Tip 4 - Lean back
This will also allow the ball to sail high in the air
Tip 5 - Follow Through. Don’t just stop once your leg strikes the ball. Instead, land past the ball for more distance on your goal kick.
