I just got a pair of these Goal Zero 100 watt folding mono crystalline solar panels so I thought I'd do a quick unboxing and initial review with them plugged into my Goal Zero Yeti 1000. I'll follow this up with some real-world performance testing as soon as I get a sunny day. This unit is basically two Boulder 50's wired together with a hinge. So far, I'm very impressed with build quality and was able to get 79-80 watts in the MPTT port when it was sunny earlier in the day.

You HAVE to get the Goal Zero 200 watt briefcase panels and do a review on them.... I can’t find even ONE review of them on RU-vid.... love the quality and information of your videos! Keep up the great work, camping season is upon us! 👍🏽

Bought the 100 watt briefcase and Yeti 400. I am just using my laptop and the Yeti battery hasn't come off 100% full. Partly cloudy day here in Washington. Very pleased with the performance. The convenience of the handle on the Yeti and solar briefcase is so easy to set up and put away. Yeti battery has 2 plugs for AC and 3 usb ports. Also an 12 volt connection. Of course then there's the charge port for the solar panel or AC charging cord. Takes 7 hours to charge on AC but 4 to 6 hours on solar. Yep the bag needs at least padding. and a safe place within the van.

How's your new solar panel?

I used command strips that are Velcro to keep the cables in place. Worked great. Being that they are in parallel for 12V, wouldn’t replacing the cable with a thicker one help keep down losses?

USE adesive velcro for the cable to stick it in place

I would have bought a renogy or new power .The texture on the glass helps direct the light when the panels are not getting direct sunlight . If I were you, I would modify the kickstand as you can adjust for the season to get the most sunlight . I HAVE a smaller newpower panel with a charge controller for my cars that produces 35 watts per panel in direct sun that are lighter than the panel you purchased . I have them set up to be hinged together and with my own adjustable stand from 5 degs (summer) to 45 degs (winter) . Just food for thought.

so odd that goal zero designed the panels to fold WITH THE GLASS ON THE OUTSIDE...
@jessicacharles6428

with you on that. if you're really using it like we would in traveling for long term and in general ruff on equipment, that glass will get cracked or broken fast!

I agree that’s a turn off for me

Greetings Todd. Thanks for the review. I'm new to this and have a couple of questions that might be obvious to experienced users. Is the "glass" breakable? It seems ill-advised to me that the unit stores with the glass on the outside as opposed to the inside. I am concerned about damage during transport inside my packed camper. Do you think that's an issue?
@todd.parker
@todd.parker 5 лет назад
The glass seems pretty thick and is tempered so if it does break it will be in small square pieces instead of jagged chunks. The case doesn’t provide any impact protection but you could probably use sheets of cardboard to protect it. Home Depot also sells sheets of corrugated plastic that would work and be more durable. All briefcase units I’ve seen have the panels out which is odd but I guess it’s cheaper to make and covers up all the cables and the small electrical box. These are pretty tough so I wouldn’t be too concerned about breaking them.

I agree with you my friend thank you for your great presentation they need to do something with the bag plus the latches the lock their kind of cheese e the latches are cheap they should have a better latch on the unit oh well what do you expect when it's coming out of China

Todd, don't know why you didn't buy the 200 watt unit. But thanks for another excellent video which should apply to the 200 for the most part.

I debated it but the 200w panel looked pretty large and hard to maneuver

I picked up the BC200 for my 3000 I bought recently. It is large as Todd says below, but I figured it was better than getting 2 100s. I also liked that it came with the APP connector vs 8mm connector. Haven't tested it much other than making sure it worked.

@pac432hz 4 года назад
@@luiscolon921 Yes, I like the connector too. The boulder 200 is a bit heavy, but carried it today with my 500 x in the other hand. I'm honestly thinking about getting a boulder 100 just because it will only be about half the weight. Otherwise the 200 rocks and most people I've seen worried about the glass, but haven't heard anyone talk of it breaking. So most of the users must take care of it as it is heavy. (the 200)

Anyone know a good rule of thumb for running out and rotating the panels to keep decent alignment with the sun? Maybe every hour and a half?
@todd.parker
@todd.parker Год назад
You get most of your sun in a 4 hour windows from 10-2 so I’d focus on optimizing then, maybe moving every 1 hour

It folds up with the solar panels on the outside? I think they missed the boat on this one. I need a r really tough panels to carry off road in baja for 3 months each Summer.

Yeah, all briefcase panels work that way but I agree, seems like a bad idea to not protect the panels

Can a Solar Panel Be Placed Behind A Window Inside A Van Or Home While Maybe At Work.

It can but I think most glass blocks a fair about of solar radiation

8 Watts per panel! Not suitable for the UK then. You just saved me some money, thank you. 👌🏻

It’s best to combine panels that are the same wattage

having the glass face outwards is the biggest design flaw i see with this. the case is not protective enough. a disaster waiting to happen

The Boulder briefcase doesn’t charge very well or very fast 💨 I’ve just charged my yeti in the house 🏡 Or When I need an economic charge I just put it in the car 🚗 and tie it in like crazy so it doesn’t kill me in a crash 💥 The 12v high amp source worked quite nicely and I was going to be driving anyway. Probably the most eco and quick

I get about 80w which is roughly the same as the car charger but you only get 5-6 hours of sun per day
