GoalZero Yeti 1400 and Solar Integration with the 4Runner

This was a fun project. GoalZero has just released an awesome way to connect your Yeti 1000, 1400, or 3000 to your vehicle, so that your vehicle can tend the portable generator, but also accept GoalZero’s solar to feed into the Yeti, and THEN backed your vehicle electrical system. Super neato! Solar to Yeti Link, Yeti Link to Yeti 1400, then to Vehicle System and if Yeti is charged, it will charge Vehicle System. Best part? All just unplugs and you can pull the Yeti right out to use however/wherever you need it!

If you've only been subscribed to this channel for 5 months Jason actually used to go out in his vehicle. As an unabashed capitalist I appreciate the monetization, as a follower who got in a near the beginning, I weep for what my favorite RU-vid channel has become. (As a fan of grammar I am sad at my own run-on sentence)

This is the way. Much simpler than a dual-battery setup, and about the same weight (Yeti 1000 is lighter than a car battery, but solar panels cancel that out). It's about 50% more expensive than a dual-battery setup in the engine bay but cuts out all the complexity & installation time with wiring setups. Yeti 1000 + 100W solar panels would be enough to run a 50L fridge for 3-5 days depending on sunlight, and that's if the engine is off the entire time. In an emergency, you can just go for a 30-minute drive and bring the Yeti up to charge again. Killer setup!

Goal Zero is a great company and I love that they are bringing portable solar generation to the masses in compact clean units, but the prices they charge are craaazy, especially for panels. If you don't have the money and some extra time, do the research, piece together your own kit, wire it up, and you'll get waaaay more bang for the buck. (steps down from soap box) love the content, one of my favorite channels

Good to hear you are doing well . We have been using Yeti 400 for about 5yrs for camp lights at camp and charging phones etc . We love Goal Zero products and have thinking about the 1400 for power outages for our frig at home. Had not thought about using it while camping maybe over kill but looks like a good system . Thanks for info.

Just did some research and attempted to purchase the stuff I needed to replace my self built. Mostly to save on size. Mine takes up a ton of space. Unfortunately, I'd say still better to build your own. The Yeti is OK, but...the adapter for the car is 400$ and the solar adapter is 100$. You still can not solar charge with MPPT and the vehicle charge at the same time. They plug into the same port. Its progress though. Until this year the Yeti could not even charge via your alternator. Unfortunately, everything on their site is on "back order." If you can score it for free and actually get it, take it. I spent about 3k all in and built a much better, more flexible, faster charging, better invertor system which I can adapt to whatever I need, and that includes 2-100w solar panels. All from on line videos. The advantage of the Goal Zero is the compact size. Love your Vids too Mike.

You have so much power for your needs , if you want you could plug in a 750 watt microwave which will have a start up wattage that the yeti will handle and sit around 1150 watts, I love the yeti and I microwave everything, I also have a 800watt aircon which the yeti handles no worries thanks for the video. The only thing I don’t like about goal zero and it really pisses me off is they don’t have manuals , instead they have user guides that haven’t got enough information anyway great video thanks
@Felix0770
@Felix0770 5 лет назад
Hey why not just get one of their 12v DC car chargers and keep the Yeti plugged in the outlet in the back. It will only charge when the car is on because the outlet only gets power when the car is on and not touch the car battery. You can get an 8mm splitter they offer so it will take both the 12v DC input and solar panels.

Oo that might actually be a good solution for me. I'm working and playing out of a 1996 4Runner. Absolutely love this vehicle to death! I have a Yeti 400 Lead Acid which I've had for like 6-7 years, just replaced the battery in it. Been debating on upgrading to the 1500x and mounting a solar panel since that is significantly more power than the 400. But also would be nice to power and keep the one Odyssey battery I got in my 4Runner. So that when the 4Runner battery runs low from running the RIGIDs for cooking or setting up camp without running the engine, the car battery can stay charged even if it's cloudy or dark.

Between there, I was thinking about building my own camper and using a GoalZero and solar solution. Maybe I need to get that too, for ya know, redundancy! Not just because I like buying cool gear or anything, lol. Keep up the good work, Jason. Be safe.

I've been running this goal zero setup for a few months without the solar but with the alternator charging and it works great. Takes just a very short drive to have it to 100%. Only negative is I have a midsize truck ZR2; and the extension cable that goes to the truck battery needs to be a few feet longer and I had to buy two to get it to reach to the back of the truck. And it's not like my truck is big or long.

@jeremymcobb1978
@jeremymcobb1978 5 лет назад
@@darylhawkins4658 no, according to goal zero it's not needed as it's built-in to the module.
@jeremymcobb1978
@jeremymcobb1978 5 лет назад
@@darylhawkins4658 that's curious. Actually I have the 12' cable connected to the battery not the alternator. But I also just checked mine, which draws almost 100 at idle and almost 300 while driving, in 100+ degree weather and driving for thirty minutes, and my cable was not even warm to touch.

Trying to figure out why someone would want that much junk in a 4runner? There’s solar generators that take up much less space and/or a inverter that could’ve been used instead.
@sillyboy32
@sillyboy32 5 лет назад
Looks nice. I built my own in a pelican case a few years ago with a battle born lithium and RedArc. At the time the goal zero could not charge off the car. Still, it’s solar and car charge times fail In comparison. It’s connected to the car and solar with Anderson quick connects. It’s run me fridge for a week without any input. I do like how compact the goal zero is. My components were much more expensive, but it’s completely modifiable and I can add on whatever I need. It’s been fantastic for a 3+ day trek to the woods or weekend on the sand bar. Plus, it’s kept me from needing to install a second battery. And oh, building it myself, despite many Fbombs, was the best part

Hey man love the channel, did you connect the yeti directly to your Circuit Breaker box in the back? Is that all it takes to send charge to your AUX battery? Also, did you add a 150 circuit breaker from the ACR to battery #1 or is that what the ACR does naturally? Lastly, did you add a 150 circuit breaker in addition to the circuit breaker box on the #4 that you ran from the back to the AUX battery? basically where did you end up adding the 150a Cb?

@spikeycoda

DO YOUR BATTERY BANK RESEARCH! It gets complicated and also potentially dangerous. Battery banks NEED to be done with ALL the same batteries for one. Expansion beyond that requires battery tender voltage regulator components and fuses and switches. Actually. A switch is highly recommended when only have a dual battery set up as well and maybe even including a battery isolator so you don’t drain your starter battery too.

@SwellRunner

It's a 100w. And I'm not sure it would charge something this large from zero very well - it certainly wouldn't happen in one day.
@SAPPER510
@SAPPER510 5 лет назад
I don't think you would classify Goal Zero products or other competitors brands to be a generator. Storage/Power bank would be better suited. They don't generate power, electrical power is already stored there or electrical power is being collected to be stored. Solar panels doesn't generate electrical power either, it converts solar power into electrical power.

Remarkable that just a little while ago you knew nothing about 4x4 vehicles and overland travel and now you have become an “influencer” who companies pay $$ for marketing and product placement. Only in America! I don’t say this in a bad way but we are a land of plentiful and opportunity and as consumers we are willing to be “influenced” by people who aren’t really experts at what they are trying to sell..which is great if you are looking to make a quick buck as you can bypass the whole learning curve thing.. One downside is that those who actually have years, or in some cases decades, of experience but lack the marketing skills, or otherwise don’t want to put their integrity and values up for sale, suffer .It's a dog-eat-dog world!
