Goanna (Gordon Franklin Wilderness Ensemble) - Let The Franklin Flow

Having become an influential folk/rock band after the releases of Solid Rock and Razor's Edge, Shane Howard penned this protest song (under the name of F.River) against the proposed damming of the Franklin River for a hydro-electricity scheme. The anti-damming protests became so powerful that the Hawke Federal Government stepped in to stop the Tasmanian State parliament from going ahead with the plan.
All this was organized by the Tasmanian Wilderness Society through the likes of Bob Brown and many others.
The magnificent west coast of Tasmania is now protected as a world heritage area.
Recorded in February 1983, it reached No.12 nationally, No.4 in Melbourne and No.15 in Sydney.

Back in the days when hydro was bad for the environment and coal was good. A coal-fired power station was built instead of a dam on the Franklin River.
@zoltantoth7286
@zoltantoth7286 3 года назад
@@666theninja Hydro does emit greenhouse gases in the form of methane from decomposing plants that have been "drowned" by the water. As water levels rise and drop, this continues but the amount is much, much less than fossil fuel powered generators. Bob Hawke's election platform in 1983 was to not dam the Franklin River and to build a coal-fired plant instead. I don't know if it was ever built but Tas. does currentl;y have natural gas fired power. I am also old enough to remember when paper straws were banned in favour of the (then) environmentally-friendly plastic straws.

@@zoltantoth7286 The Land Based Plants are Now Water Based Plants and good for the Enviroment Silly. Bob's Evil plan was to Use the Franklin Dam FOR POLITICAL GAIN and he never promised a Coal Power Station or any other Power Station, he gave the Tas Government Compensation Money for Stopping the Dam. The Franklin Dam should of been BUILT. Now look at the Problem Australia has with Electric Power in South Australia and Droughts. The Franklin Dam would now be sending Pollution Free Power across Bass Straight to the Mainland, Time to reverse that High Court Decision and BUILD that Dam.

When Australians cared for more than just the value of their real estate. They chose the Hawke government. The first time I walked down the bank of the Franklin and dipped my hands in the water, I cried. This was such an important issue for me then, it still is. Our beautiful Australian environment screams for us to help it, but for many of us, our ears are closed. We need Redgum, Goanna and Midnight Oil like never before.

Plus did Shame from Goanna think about the Hydro Workers that worked on that Dam and the Contractors as well when he wrote that stupid song. No doubt Not one thought i bet was given about them, there is two sides to every fight and the Fight is not over. Power Demands in the Future will Re-Boot the Franklin Dam one day.

Yes, he got bobbled by the ALP. I live in his electorate, and he supports us in a really big way to save the local headland. He (and others) introduced legislation to parliament to hand over bushland earmarked for development, and now it is a National Park, so I reckon he is doing what he can. Every time I speak with him he is very positive about the headland: see our struggle for yourself - just google malabarheadland So don't be too hard on him, as his heart is in the right place.

If you are going to take a creative artist down for what they do in their "Private Life" Is something else again. Jesus Christ put most correctly when he said "Let he that is without sin cast the first stone." It is not our place to judge others. This man was just one of the movers and shakers who helped save this great piece of the World for future generations to see.

Yes...I have been to look at the H.E.C power stations around the state which are still producing clean non poluting energy and I see nothing wrong with that. beautiful lakes and lots of work for everyone... There is more of Tasmania set aside in Reserves, National Parks and the like than there is open to development, so the line needs to be drawn somewhere...
