With shortages that have been happening, growers all over have been looking for hardwood alternatives for growing mushrooms. We’ve found an awesome one; our new blend, which we’ve dubbed Goat Mix. Our oysters are loving it, and our yields are increasing.
We get our straw pellets from Mushroom Media. Check them out:

I've been using pine for years, specifically Pinus Radiata. From a 4.8kg bag I'll usually get upwards of a 1kg first flush.

I’ve had great results with Aspen pet bedding chips. My grey dove oyster eat that stuff up. I have even tried it a half dozen times without sterilization. Nothing, not even hot water. No problems. I have a grey block right now that is 10 days old that tomorrow I am putting in the grow room. Covered in mycelium. I buy 56 liters off Amazon under $20 with shipping. The weight of my blocks are not as heavy but the volume is the same. Large flushes. When I am looking for fast turnaround with oyster mushrooms that what I use. I also started adding some in with my masters mix. I’ll see how that goes. Hoping to get even more flushes with the addition.

I had the idea to use straw pellets as well, but despite living in a wheat-growing area, I can't find any. Awesome that the Bear's head works on softwood, I haven't had a chance to experiment with substrates for hericiums yet, but that's all that's available for heaters here; I've been using smokers' pellets for my oysters which is costing me more than I'd like.

@@timmyopally I'm going to keep looking, but I live in a city, so finding a lot of that stuff is more challenging. I have rabbits also, so I was going to do some experimenting using rabbit feed and fruit wood mix, and see how that will work in a pinch. I may just start ordering masters mix on Amazon. I don't grow enough to order pallets of the stuff.

I still have not been able to find soy pellets up here in this part of Canada. So may have to do some experimenting to see if something else would work.

Since you are now using straw substrates. You might as well start raising egg laying chickens. A varied diet with bugs and vegetations makes very healthy eggs. You may be better to partner up with organic chicken egg layer. Good luck with the spent substrates.

Straw is unfortunately a heavily sprayed crop (off label more so now for harvesting, by stiffening the stalks)...especially with round up/Bayer/Monsanto. So in essence more heavy metals, and toxins will end up in the fruiting body, unless you can find unsprayed crops...Hardly Organic, but very profitable for the grower.
@andrewduggan6808
@andrewduggan6808 3 года назад
I looked into chemical sprays this in the UK - it's bad (roundup and chlormequat for crop lodging). Easy to get wheat straw pellets in the UK but often treated as used for animal bedding - silver, sodium, sulphur, phospheric acid :-P etc etc. Two brands I tested were a waste of spawn, pellets, and time. But there is good stuff out there - just a matter of finding it. I am hoping some of the biofuel straw pellets are not treated as much.

Hi Andrew, do you pasteurize or sterilize the goat mix? And what's the ratio? 50/50? How much water do you add? Thx and greetings from the other side of the ocean. Mark

Been thinking of using Straw pellets as a main source recently too as I find Straw to be pretty messy and labour intensive. What would the ratio of water to straw pellets be though (eg: 1L water to 1KG pellets), and how much substrate would you realistically get from say 10kg of straw pellets? Would plain straw pellets work too?
