The Goat Rocks boast some of the finest hiking Southern Washington has to offer. Nestled between the triangle of Mount Rainier, Mount Adams and Mount St. Helens, this volcanic landscape is littered with jagged peaks, stunning wildflowers, and (if you're lucky, unlike us) mountain goats.
This weekend we hiked a 30ish mile loop, part of which is on the PCT, to enjoy some of the main features of the wilderness area. Join in our adventure and collect beta on trailheads, mileage, trail conditions and more!
PS - bugs are bad in the Goat Rocks around this time of year, so don't forget to plan ahead!

Thank you for sharing! I’m backpacking Walupt Lake to White Pass at the end of the week, so this was helpful knowing the snow situation! You two are adorable together!

Thanks so much, and have fun! Sounds like snow shouldn't be a big issue, but definitely take precautions around bugs. The biting flies were particularly annoying -_-

Elder here, I hiked from White Pass with a goal to come out at Walput (sp?) Lake in late August 1973 as a teenager. Old Snowy was the first climbing register I ever signed. Thanks for taking me back there. :) I do recall a scary steep snowfield we had to cross below Old Snowy summit as we continued towards Snowgrass Flat, where we then got rained out for a few days and had to cut the hike short. (yea, back then, there wasn't really a "smoke season" and lots more summer rain). We also basically had the trail to ourselves, as not many were hiking the backcountry that long ago. I wish I had some photos of St. Helens from that hike because it was before it erupted. Good memories, thanks for packing lightly and leaving no trace!

@jillmariezeezee wow, what great memories! Thanks so much for sharing. I often daydream what MSH would be like pre-explosion. My entire relationship with it is post-1980. Rest assured, the snowfield below Old Snowy still persists, although I daresay it is probably smaller now than it was in the 70s.

The Goat Rocks area is an amazing place, any hiker that's ever been there is blown away by the views. The next time you are at Walupt Lake, be sure to check out Walupt Creek falls. The trail is not marked so you will need to look it up to find it. Thanks for sharing your hike.

@@davewinch7677 that's a great tip. Thanks for sharing! We're hoping to bring the kayak and visit Walupt Lake for a front country adventure before winter, so we'll look for the falls then.

Awesome video! I’ll be there Sunday! What trailhead did you start at?

@seansuttles1813 we started at Berry Patch trailhead this time, but Old Snowy, Cispus Basin and Goat Lake all feel super reachable from Snow Grass Flats trailhead, too.
