Do not forget about the manure. Goat, chicken and rabbit manures are the best manures for the garden. Very valuable as far as manure goes. God Bless Joe

Your video reminds me a lot about my childhood. I was born in South Eastern Nigeria and at one time we had more than 300 goats. Watching your show, I feel like a kid again. Thank You.

Discovered your about a month ago and have been binge watching. I built one of your hay bunks out of pallets this week. We raise fainting goats and have a herd of about 40 . They will start kidding in a couple of weeks. Yes, the bucks have some strange and nasty habits! Lol! Really enjoy your videos!

Great video sir, thanks for the useful info. I got me 2 Dwarf Nigerians, father/son, a little more than a year ago and I fell in love with those guys. They're wethers and I got them to keep brush down around the property. Best decision I ever made.

Just came in from the barn after checking on Gabriel and Kodiak. They are the happy and friendly boys that left the farm. They are kind of naughty, but that is part of goat life.

The first goat I had was a small Billy , I kept him on a long chain until he got use to the place then let him go. He followed the dogs around. Yes, they have to have company. Later I got some meat goats and they always kept together where ever they went. It would be good to close in the top half of the door to the Billy's shed to give them more protection from wind.

You dam right they worth it ! Don't need to cut grass on your day off ! Free awesome milk for drinking and making cheese ! There just as smart as dogs ! Their manure is the best for the garden ! Their worth at least $ 200 a piece for the baby . Their low maintenance and get a return for their sale to buy alfalfa hay to get better quality milk production just to name a few !

Great video. We have goats as well, 5 to be exact. 3 dwarf Nigerians (a mom and 2 daughters that are registered) and 2 mixed Nigerian and pigmy (1wether and 1 female). You are 100% correct, fun to watch. The dwarf Nigerians are known for their milk, sweet not bitter like other goat milk- makes great cheese! Plan on breeding all 3 next year, should be interesting, but need to find a registered male close by, sorry MI a little too far from Virginia Beach.

Add a little extra molasses to your milker's feed, it sweetens the milk improving the taste to addictive level and increases milk output. At least that's how it works for us. We grain our milk producers the whole time they're fresh.

I am considering Kiko goats for clearing some of my property. I understand they can survive mainly by browsing (with mineral supplements) and are parasite resistant. There is forage year round in South Carolina. Kikos are a bit pricey for the registered ones, but I figure breeding will offset those start-up costs in a couple of years. We do not want to get into the dairy business, but could hire them out for sustainable land clearing. Kudzu and honeysuckle are a big problem here in the Southeast and the local State Parks contract herds. I am aware that my herd will need protection from stray dogs and coyotes, so I will also need a herd dog to stay with them. Do you use a dog on your farm? If so, what breed?

just FYI , the Nigerian 's have the highest butterfat of the goats bread in America followed by Nubian then Saanen. Alpines have the closest taste to Holstien cows which are to main sourse of milk at the stores.

Goats are fun critters to have, kind of like a dog almost. We fed straight corn a lot when we had them, its cheap and they like it. The sweet feed is good as well, but you can add more corn to it if you want to stretch it, it all comes out as pellets. So are you just breeding and selling?

I don't think the eating of the tree bark has anything to do with them being hungry. My goats are overly spoiled. With goat kibble and two kinds of hay, both salt and mineral. Still the little buggars strip every tree they get close to.

Very subtle references to the bucks having "some very strange habits", and being "very gross animals." Ha ha ha! Another way of saying the pee all over themselves and smell gross because of it! I have heard, though I don't know if it's true, that if you even have the bucks where the does can smell them, the milk will taste different due to a hormone response.
@lechatbotte.

The best thing to do, is separate the male from the does during the time of nursing and milking.

Corn box? I always have an eye open for ways to get feed cheap, free or paid for by another activity. Let's take a quick look for videos...pausing... wow, looks good. When I took breaks on a horse feed making job, I found the piles of corn comfortable but cold. I liked the oats better. I wonder if there weren't some way to combine a dunk tank with molasses....

@SSLFamilyDad

I did a video on fencing also if you search the channel but the two things I would focus on for Goats are using goat and sheep fencing and keeping it tight to the ground. Make sure you don't spread posts too far apart so that you can keep the bottom wire tight so they can't get under

I have about 4 acers. How many goats would you say is ideal to run at one time. I will search and subscribe to see how and what you do with the milk. I was reading some that said once you start milking them you have to keep it up for the season. Thanks for the info.
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 5 лет назад
2 to 4 goats per acre of pasture will provide them with all of their food for the summer. Once you have a goat in milk you have to keep milking them in order to keep them in milk

You must have no sense of smell. When the females are in season they have an unbelievably strong jizzy/piss smell that travels from an acre away. The stink apparently attracts the lady goats.

I'm thinking about goats and in this breed in particular for the reasons you mentioned. I'm wondering about the fencing. Cost? How much land is enough? Do you need electric fence? I didn't notice you had electric.

Bro, why waste so much land area on nothing? Just plant few fruits trees. Say like citrus, nuts, apples peaches, grapres, kiwi, passion fruit etc.. just few trees of each for family consumption. And also veg garden. YOU'LL save so much money. Besides, excess or a bit spoiled fruits n vegs you can always feed them to pigs, chicken n goats. Cheers.

Looking to get goats in the spring here in MN. What kind of fencing is needed?
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 6 лет назад
+Patrick Bedroske I would recommend sheep and goat fencing specifically. It is a woven wire with small squares so they don't get their heads stuck. That or welded wire but you would need boards between fence posts or electric wire yo keep them from jumping on the fence as they will break the welds

@punkyroo
@punkyroo 6 лет назад
In my experience goats (and livestock larger than chickens) are not worth it. The cost of goats, food, infrastructure, and health check-ups and time and stress are not really worth the outputs. :)
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 6 лет назад
That is a good point I did not include was if a Goat gets sick. We have been lucky so far and I will do all medications myself if I know what to treat but if we had to have a vet out it can eat up quite a bit of those profits quickly
@punkyroo
@punkyroo 6 лет назад
SSLFamilyDad That's the thing. It's not even just illness. Around these parts, to sell a goat, even babies, people want to see recent tests and vet records (which for just two goats was over $500 for me) so it makes it so much less profitable. The only other option is selling them for cheap meat on Craigslist or similar.

@Submanca
@Submanca 6 лет назад
Do you rotate pasture or do you feel the need to?
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 6 лет назад
+Submanca I will be using a different approach along wit some rotation. Spreadingvout animals on a very large area and having different animals on the same pasture. For instance, goats eat weeds and twigs, pigs would eats roots, bugs, some grasses, etc. And then chickens can come in behingvand eat all the little things. Could also have a few sheep in there as well to eat grass. I would also like to do some rotating but every other year do a garden or plant crops on the pasture
@Submanca
@Submanca 6 лет назад
Some friends of mine have goats and they didn't rotate the pasture. They ate everything to the ground. The area now is a dust bowl.
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad 6 лет назад
+Submanca yeah, I see that a lot with people. I am thinking so far that as long as there is enough room the pasture can support the animals and regenerate. Those 2 male goats were in that pasture all summer and you could even tell they had eaten anything
@Submanca

First off goats are browsers not grazers don't put them in a field put them in a rough patch and let them brows. You should be using this fact to subsidize your feeding cost and adding to your income. This is also very critical for the goat digestive system Noxxic weeds are there filet mignon and critical to the good health. These goats are a business not your pets.
