Showcases the combined effort that is part of modern anti-submarine warfare, in which fixed and rotary wing aircraft work in conjunction with destroyers and escorts to locate and destroy enemy submarines. Featured in the film is footage of the fleet Sonar School, Grumman S-2 Tracker and the Neptune P2V operating off of the aircraft carrier USS Randolph (CV-15), and the destroyers USS Sarsfield (DD-837), USS Blandly (DD-943) and USS Cony (DD-508), and the submarine USS Sirago (SS-485).

Good Video - I was an Aviation Anti-Submarine Warfare Systems Operator (AW) - or airborne Sonarman back in the mid 1980s through 2000. I grew up right outside NAS Moffett Field - my neighborhood dads were either pilots/NFOs or senior AWs, so I was introduced to ASW back in the days this film was made. Patience/Boredom was the theme in my years hunting Soviet subs in the Pacific. Love this video for the dedicated ASW Carriers... also note that not once is "software" mentioned - this is all pre-computer.

One thing they didn't tell anyone about in this film was a System later known as SOSUS. In the early 1950's up and down the Atlantic (including the Caribbean) and Pacific coastlines of the US and allied countries (including the British, and the Republic of China, South Korea, Philippines, Australia, etc.) there were Passive Sonar Arrays along the bottom. We could get measurements of specific frequency bands and their bearings! Since each station (such as Naval Facility Cape Hatteras) had 2 such systems, we could get a "rough cut" on where anything below or above the surface was, when you added in other stations it could be reasonably accurate! This was all declassified in 1981 if you were wondering. I can only imagine what equipment replaced the system when it became SOSUS, and what has replaced SOSUS!

Spent 18 years in SOSUS, both atlantic and pacific. Not sure where you heard that it was declassified in 1981, though. It was still classified when I got out in 1991, but some of it was declassified not long after that. Which NAVFACS did you call home? I was stationed at Key West, Bermuda, COSL - Norfolk, Kef, Centerville Beach, NOPF Pearl Harbor, Adak, Argentia, and CVB again.

@@gregcorwin8316 I believe it was 95 or so. I was the technician supporting the first civilian team granted access to the SOSUS stations. We used Keflavik and Argentia to track the movements of whales and underwater seismic events. Doctors Nishimura and Clark were the chief scientists who lead the research effort. I was blown away because I had come from the P-3 community and we always laughed when given a SOSUS cut. We didn’t know the results were dithered to protect its capabilities.

@@kaptainkaos1202 That is very interesting! I wish I had still been around when the scientists were let in on the secret. While I was still in I had the chance to ride along on P-3's many times out of Bermuda (flew through a hurricane on one flight out off Bermuda, that was a rush!), Keflavik, Adak, and even Moffett one time when I was stationed at Centerville Beach. Had the opportunity to go along on A, B, and C variants over the years, even an EP-3 flight out of Kef one time. THat was seriously interesting. I really enjoyed working with you guys.

Wonderful stuff. A shame that more was not made of the HS Denison, the hydrofoil shown towards the end; and the (ultimately unsuccessful) DASH is a reminder that drones are not quite as new as some drone enthusiasts would have us believe.
