I'll admit I may be a bit biased because I've already been toying with different ideas of how to do my goblins and my personal love for reconstructing and bringing new life to tropes that have been done to near death, but I've gotta say this has been one of your best episodes for getting my worldbuilding gears turning yet. 👍

@@yogeybogeybear3542 I think he probably didn't want to have to deal with the issues. You could have talked with the other player, informing him you wanted to play more of a "master of the hunt" role with the dogs, and his familiar could occupy different roles. Hell, you guys could have gone in together with the dogs. ':)

I got a goblin barbarian character sheet. He has a personality of a dog and follows the party like a puppy, leaving things like dead birds in their sleeping bags as offerings

Huh, that's similar to my goblin rogue, Grabbins the Unwanted. His backstory was that he was treated so bad, he doesn't even consider himself a goblin. What goblin gets fed after the slaves and has to sleep on the warg dung piles. The last straw was when the goblin group's leader and resident bully had Grabbin's only friends (a gnome thief and his daughter) turned into stew to punish Grabbins.

This reminds me of a 3E campaign I was in. The DM made a setting that was sort of... Celtic-inspired, or Celtic-adjacent. Kobolds, goblins, hobgoblins, orcs, bugbears, ogres, ogre mages, ettins, and a bunch of other classic monsters usually called things like "over-used" or "cliche" were changed to be "Dark Faeries". They got new abilities, and most of them were given more INT as well. It was a fun campaign. The goblins were especially annoying... They could use Improved Invisibility a few times per day, and were played as pranksters, but vicious ones. They were always sneaking into towns to harass both people and animals by breaking things, setting traps, and generally just being mean little shits. They were a nuisance up until our wizard hit level eight, when she took Craft Wondrous Item and made everyone in the party goggles that let us see invisible creatures.

My favorite version of a goblin is goblins as carnies. In Eberron or a similar world, I see goblins as a wandering carnival, part Dumbo circus, part gypsy fortune teller, and a little bit of "something wicked this way comes" thrown in. They don't try to kill you, but unless you are very careful you will leave without your purse, your virtue, and possibly your underwear.

Why do people say goblins are weak starting monsters?? They can kill a level 1 PC in 1-2 good hits! The first combat encounter of the starter set is known to randomly TPK groups! They're actually kind of scary until the whole party is level 2 at least, and even then they're quite the HP drain until the players hit 3rd level!

Yeah it is odd, I've run LMoP and am currently running Sunless Citadel. The Kobolds in that, despite being more numerous, are generally less of a threat (even with pack tactics, which is a serious power boost) than goblins, as at such low levels even a small difference in hp or AC is huge. (That said, the kobold spellcaster in that module is nasty if they take the party by surprise, chromatic orb can *easily* instakill level 1-2 players). I think a large part of it is that people's perception of goblin threat level is being influenced by their view of goblin mundanity: Goblins are more ubiquitous in fantasy canon, and so are seen as more mundane than other things like kobolds, and so will generally be seen as weaker than their states give them.

Note on RPG ( Goblins.) Back in the day of AD&D2e they printed out the book, " The Complete Humanoid Hand Book." It covers handling monster humanoid with player character classes and multi-class for non stander characters of PC and NPC " role" playing choices for adventure campaigns. Then D&D3e came out and everything had character class levels. On the side note from AD&D where they had XP for everything that moved and 3e with it's CR. Rabbits/ rats, crows/chickens, chasing down frogs/ toads along with clearing out your garden/ barn out of over size giant insects. AD&D starts rogues out at 3rd-level and warrior/ wizards out at 2nd-level just for living on a farm or cleaning up around a wizard hut/ tower. For 3e, CR track mass havoc farm vermin and by the time a " commoner " NPC character reach the age of 28, they will be a single class 7th-level character. Also remember Luke Skywalker became a 9th-level character within ( 4 years ). Double the XP need to reach a given level then just double the years needed to train to reach that level. For a more interesting " goblin," just give then PC levels and a " theme."

Since reading Eberron and Jim's description of the Bugbears in land between two rivers, I have been having my goblinoids act more like Primate troops, which I think works especially well with Eberron, but also other worlds. Goblins : macaques or baboons - most live in protected groups, with young males trying to prove themselves (usually in creativity or raiding, kinda like small angry vikings). Prefer scavenging and grazing, feel a need for a leader or protector for the group. Hobgoblins: Chimpanzees - structured military society where there is a main group, with outsiders having to be more inventive to gain approval/honour or survive by themselves. Bugbears: gorillas - lazy and prefer an easier life, but quick to anger and follow the strike first ask questions later (watch any video of a silverback on the troop defense). There will be an "alpha", and will be stubborn to listen to anyone who has not proven themselves to be it.

I ran an AL game for some younger players a few weeks ago. One of the young guys made the comment "its just goblins, they're nothing to worry about. I have an AC of 18, they won't even be able to hit me!" So I set up an ambush and took advantage of the goblins' "nimble escape" ability to run circles around the PCs. 5 goblins came close to TPKing a 6-member party!

In my world Goblins come from abandoned baby or very naughty children. You can also become a Goblin by making a pack with The Goblin Queen. In this one campaign, I run had my player sister go missing and took them 9 weeks to get to her due to them keep doing other quests first. So by the time there find her she almost full goblin in mind and body. Awesome work like all ways Web DM and can't wait for the next video.

I feel like an interesting series would be taking a fantasy creature, looking at how it's represented in different settings (Forgotten Realms, World of Warcraft, Warhamner, ect.), and then presenting that information. After that, you create a "conclusion" video that takes your favorite things about the creature from those setting, then create your own.

Funny you mentioned 'perverting a Halfling into a goblin' in the show- in my Campaign setting I have it so Gnomes who are forced through horrible events and survive but those around them do not, become Goblins, or if Gnome Children are kidnapped and raised around goblins they themselves become goblins.

I used goblins heavily in my crime campaign that you guys inspired. They were like a mix of Warcraft and D&D but a repressed class, there where feral goblins and city goblins living in ghettos. They where like a mix of voodoo and 1930's New Yorkers.

3(ish) years ago I started dm'ing. Very first session the Adventuring guild I had built for them to join used captured and imprisoned goblins and orcs for the entrance exam. My players killed the gobbos and then proceeded to ask the guildmaster(me) why they imprisoned monsters within the Adventuring Guild. This has led to me integrating humanoid monsters in more nuanced ways over the years. Now I have an "enclave" of a hobgoblin tribe, a orc hunting party, a goblin nest, and 2 old human druids running a subterranean mushroom farm along a popular trade route. Monsters with (slightly) modular alignments are fun.

Hey Jim, Warhammer has Night Goblins. Psychedelic mushrooms, fanatics, giant gobs full of teeth and more fun stuff to be done for flavour.

I love Goblins, I generally play Goblins when I'm able. I've played the same one over the years who have become a Sorcerer (Created) though I wish D&D would define them more as you look at Volvo's they have their own Caste system. I think they need to explore that.

I have adopted the Dresden cosmology into my D&D homebrew game. One of my favorite characters was a goblin bard/warlock. The bard side of him was played as an apprentice to the oratory keeper of his tribes traditions and lore, his instrument was a bone trump. His patron was the ErlKonig (Erlking). He's a lot of fun to play. Lots of roleplaying opportunities when interacting with non goblin kin

There was a 1 shot adventure for pathfinder where you played goblins. We had so much fun with it, that we built a campaign around it.

I have a long complicated lore for my goblins, who were sort of a primordial communal race that fell from glory with the introduction of greed into the world, but I play them as mysterious fey that seem to know some deep secret about the history of that world, and the plan to achieve its recalibration towards a more equitable society. I give them guerilla and up-close pack tactics, like throwing sticky fruit that encumbers people from the trees, or if enough of them surround the player, they can strip away all their armor.

Thank you for reminding me how much fun goblins can be. I know it may have been said offhand, but in your average D&D setting there would absolutely be a breed of dog called a Goblin Hound. Tough enough to handle a few rounds of a goblin's knife but small enough to follow them into their holes.
