That wasn't a robot. According to lore, Go-bots were originally organic humanoid aliens who had their brains implanted into transforming robot bodies to survive a cataclysmic event that nearly destroyed their home planet. Since Scooter is technically a cyborg, the mechanic just killed a guy. The good news is that the vehicle body now works properly.

Fun fact after Hasbro bought Tonka, the Gobots were rolled into transformers, so Gobot names are in the rotation for autobots and Deceptacons and while they can’t legally use the original designs due to a legal nightmare involving Hasbro, Bandai and Warner Bros, a lot of Gobots have been homaged or even straight up redesigned as fitting repaints of existing transformers and recast as cybertronians. Most Notably Crasher who is a common Mirage repaint and was originally planned to be the main villain of the Bumblebee movie before she was replaced by Shatter, Leader 1 who was Megatron’s partner Minicon in Transformers Armada, and Bug Bite who is an all white decepticon repaint of Bumblebee/Cliffjumper. Also other Gobots have made cameo appearances in comics such as Cykill who was seen being brutally torn apart by Megatron in Gladiatorial combat in Megatron’s origin comic

I knew this kid a very long time ago who got super livid when his mom got him a Go Bot instead of a Transformer for his birthday because the toy store was sold out of Transformers at the time. To this day, he still doesn’t talk to her. He is THAT petty.

Well actually Gobots came out first. So in fact it's the other way around. GoBots made its U.S. premiere in 1983, nearly a full year before the original Transformers toyline's debut. It had a similar origin, being mostly made up of pre-existing Japanese toys used under license by an American distributor, in this case the Machine Robo series by Bandai spinoff company Popy.
