Thank you for making this video. I was considering doing something similar since accurate info has been difficult to find post-2012 export ban. Now I can be lazy and just point people at your vid. Great fish, very fun to keep.
I don’t know gH. Is it for a shrimp tank or something? I have them at 6.8pH. If you go to dansfish.com to purchase, they are very good at answering questions if you have a specific concern :))
GH requirements are pretty low. They supposedly do well in Dan's water up in Sheridan Wyoming, which as I understand it is liquid rock. I keep them in a tank fed by a home water softener system, which has almost undetectable GH, and they're breeding for me. Fry have not shown any particular issues with hardness. Their home range starts in the Caatinga area of Brazil, and then slams into the Atlantic rainforest right before it hits the ocean proper. So you'd go from highland desert with lots of sediment down into a very tannin rich soft-water rainforest environment. This is a surprisingly simple pleco to breed. Think Corys and you'll probably nail it.
I have two, it’ll be 2 years in July since I got them by mine are dark with small brown dots maybe because my substrate is completely black and I also have 6 galaxy Otocinclus maybe they’re trying to blend in idk when I got them one was about .75 of an inch and the other around one inch, now they’re both still under 2 inches but chubby.
Awesome!! Yeah i bought them for $20USD each. Not the cheapest, but great little cleaners! Unfortunately, the fry did not make it - i think its pretty hard to raise them bc they stick on the glass and dont eat the food on the bottom. My thought is if u have a lot of algae on the glass that would be ideal for their fry? But they spawned regularly for me.
@@Fishnkitts Back again. I now have 5 of them. So pleased with them. You have mixed sexes. Not much info out there on sexing them. Your video at 7.38 is excellent shot of them and there underside. But I still cannot sex them. Do you know?
You know, i dont quite understand that fin length method for sexing 🤣 BUT, if you look at their underside “holes”, you will notice a hole that is a little higher for the females which is where their eggs come out. It might also be a little bigger? This my own observation, so it’s what i noticed for my goby plecos. I had a big and small male, and the female was the same size as the small male. I think the females are a little less “colorful”. Unfortunately, my little female passed due to a blockage while laying eggs, so i can’t verify it for sure now :((( If they start spawning (at night) you will know who is who!! ;)) so glad ur enjoying them, they’re fun little cleaners!
