God’s Will

Dennis and Julie ponder how much freewill people really have in life? They discuss the impulse to steal, reasons for not stealing, and cheating on tests. What are the five Commandments that people struggle with most? The bible is a divine life manual. If God gives people good individual natures… does God give people evil individual natures …or is it random/luck? Did God create evil… or did God create the possibility for evil?

I'm reading your Rational Bible series, only half way through Exodus. My Jewish husband is having a blast listening to me. I stump him and often say, "Read Dennis' Rational Bible."

I love the honesty. Every time one of you makes an error or contradicts yourself, you are transparent thru it and it is unbelievably relatable and a relief to see, the intellectual honesty of these brilliant thinkers/speakers.

During the cherry story all I could think is, "What kind of cherries cost $25?" Unless it was ten lbs or something, lol. Good lord that's a lot of money. I got two lbs for about 5 bucks the other day and thought that was expensive. But, those were just regular cherries from Washington that are common this time of year. Y'all are a hoot as always. Thank you so much for this enlightening weekly show, I thoroughly love it and you all as well

Happy to give this its 100th Like. This one was by far the deepest and most profound episode I’ve seen yet and I really enjoyed this enriching, philosophical, and friendly discussion about God, and randomness vs God’s control over events. Kol hakavod

Minute 49:00. OK boys and girls, as usual, Julie comes through in the clutch. She believes in God's Grand Plan and that He does interject Himself into our lives. Elegantly stated, as is Julie's ... hmmmmm ... talent. Ultimately, both Dennis and Julie are correct. I have had 6 experiences, spread out over a few years, which were so fabulously improbable, marthimatically incalculable, fantastically extra-ordinary that I am compelled to attribute their occurrence to God's Gentle Intervention. Julie is correct. The other 99.99% of my life is random despite my best efforts to direct it. Dennis is correct.

This podcast rules. Stealing is wrong, unless you need to for the sake of Godly good, like saving a life. Pull the goat out of the ditch even on Sabbath because that is an asterisk, there ARE asterisks when living the Bible, no matter how fundamentalist one tries to be.

Well, 10 minutes in and Julie Hartman did it again; she revealed her unique inner awesomeness ... this time on the Art Of Not Stealing. Each year, I spend about $100,000 at Home Depot. Sometimes the cashiers miss something from my cart; 20 bucks here; 40 bucks there. Maybe a whole pallet of concrete. No big deal, right; I give HD tons of money. But, nooooo, if I cheat Home Depot, I am one step closer to cheating my future wife. So, I always tell the cashiers. Once, the store manager over heard me point out a missed item to the cashier; he stepped in and said, " The pilferage from this store is astonishingly high. Thanks for telling the cashier. I see your Contractor Card. No charge today on that lumber." Two weeks ago, my tool trailer was burglarized in my totally fenced backyard, in my totally safe neighborhood. $3,000 gone, poof. I will not victimize another person by stealing from him or her. Ain't gunna happen. Thanks for your awesomeness, Julie.

Judith Moore It's amazing! Every episode has a depth of character in reaching into the heart and soul of the human condition. Dennis is always so profound and the depth of understanding the TRUTH of our Christian and Jewish heritage is a learning curve. I'll add bishop Robert Barron who equally speaks profound and powerful words from our Creator. And isn't Julie a darling! ?

I live by Luke 16:10. If you can't be trusted in little things, you can't be trusted with big things. (Paraphrased) I have no compulsion to steal, but thoughts do show up on occasion. The last time, it was a little petty thing that I know many people wouldn't think twice about. that verse came to mind reminding me why I don't do that.

Minute 41:00. Dennis is correct. God allows luck to run its course aka the Vicissitudes of Life. To cope with these vicissitudes, He taught us how to cope with misfortune, how to share our fortune and how to be happy, grateful and generous despite it all.

To me, the great moral mystery is: why doesn't everyone want to maximize the respect paid to them by others? Perhaps the most important reason that I would never assault/ rape/ steal against others, is that I want every decent person I encounter again, after a day, or after 40 years, to think and declare to others that I am a decent person.

Yes, God created the serpent and we must study The Bible so we know how to resist and help others by example. I am so convinced we are where we are because of the lack of religion.

There is no word for luck or randomness in Hebrew. I believe, as Dennis states, that lots are cast to preserve freedom and love. But God shapes things when our freedom sometimes brings danger to all of the earth and mankind destroying itself by it's crazy choices.

Minute 35:00. Has Julie ever looked better? With her golden tan? God did create "the serpent and all the wild beasts" ... and you and me and Pol Pot etal, but the serpent's "shrewdness" and evil behavior is entirely the serpent's doing under his protected agency to act for himself; and act he did. God only provides the agency, the mileu for Satan the serpent to act out his own (evil) nature. God provides the agency; we provide the good or evil. Love you Julie, but Check One for Dennis.

Time Magazine covers story April 8, 1966 asks the question: Is God Dead The answer: The God of which you speak was never alive. Many people conjure an idea of whom God should be, and when their conjured image fails to appear, they resort to atheism. But, the God they conjure never was real, never was alive. So, yes, their fake, conjured God is effectively dead. The real God is a different story, as Dennis and Julie illustrate.

The two of you need to read & study Job. I am listening to the book at the moment. God is in control of what is going on but He doesn't interfere with our individual choices. GOD DID NOT CREATE EVIL!!! It was Lucifer's choice to go down the road of pride. God gave all His created beings the choice of obedience or disobedience otherwise we would be robots & God did not want robots, He wanted creatures who would worship Him willingly. God allows evil because Adam chose to sin against God & so evil was bought into the world by Adam, however God had a plan to bring us back to Himself by sending Jesus into the world at the proper time to open the way back to God through His death & resurrection. DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF PUTTING GOD INTO A BOX!! Remember that He is God with a mind that is far, far smarter than yours will ever be. You are getting dangerously close to denigrating God!! There is no such thing as chance, it is providence! With the death of those two Jewish men - it is possible that Satan had a hand in it & God allowed it so that His Name will be honoured. There is much that we do not understand about God & we should admit it & not try to put ourselves in His shoes!!

If GOD created evil, that would make GOD evil. Do you believe GOD is evil? GOD cannot ever be in the presence of evil.

You keep attributing the intent of God, according to your own will. The problem is you keep trying to justify yourself, based on your own interpretation of righteousness. Only Christ Jesus is Righteous, and His sacrifice is the acceptable offering. We need to learn why we need Him to have mercy on us. Very few will believe Him, the scripture says.

Sorry, Julie, God definatly did not create evil. Lucifer / Satan / the old serpent rebelled against God and so evil came into creation. The serpent being crafty allowed Satan to use it and to speak through it. Have you ever seen a talking snake outside Eden?
@kevinparkin3322
@kevinparkin3322 21 день назад
The serpent is a metaphor for the internal whisperings in our minds which try to persuade or dissuade us from action. In Eve's case, she considered God's opposing instructions: 1) partake of carnal knowledge with Adam to populate the Earth 2) the day you partake of carnal knowledge, as I have instructed, you will exit the Garden of Eden and live in a non-garden world ... which includes dying. Satan's prior choice to mount an all out rebellion against God, which was evil, had nothing to do with Eve, but it does illustrate how we are the creators of create 'evil' ... independent of God's will. Evil is a rebellion against God, thus we (or Satan) create it; God does not.

God created free will, and gave angels one chance. Satan chose himself over God. He chose evil then using snake Temps Adam and Eve to be like God. Read Genius again. God has Satan on a short leash but allows this. And we can use God's grace to say yes to God's will. Satan hates that . 😂
