Big thanks to PuzzleWorks for helping film this video: / puzzleworks
His puzzles and videos are incredible, please check them out!
It's the world record for the most layers on a high order deep cut face turning dodecahedron. Definitely an extremely niche world record.
Edge length : 100mm
Mass : 4.5 kg
Material : PETG for functional parts - ABS and ASA for visible tiles

Wow, I literally wasn't sure if it was mass produced at the start or not. Thought you might've been unboxing a design of yours that got factory made 😆 Congrats, crazy how far you've come when I thought that your stuff back in 2014 was peak home made puzzle making. Hats off man.

Wow, honestly would have never guessed it was 3D printed. Looks absolutely amazing, and it looks like it turns insanely smooth given its size. Can't wait to see the other puzzles some day 👀

Super cool! Would you ever consider selling the files for others to print and assemble themselves? I'd love to try and print/assemble a beast like this would be a really fun project! It would obviously be for personal use only I'd even be willing to sign a contract or something but this is so cool and I would love to be able to print it! Would you ever consider something like this? Please let me know, thanks!

🥲 this means a lot coming from the GOAT. I owe you a massive, massive thanks for pioneering FDM. You are literally the singular reason I got back into puzzle building. I was in so much awe seeing your Atlasminx, and I had written off FDM up until that point. Only now do I truly appreciate how insanely hard it must have been to build those massive minxes.
@matt.bahner
@matt.bahner Год назад
I thought your 22x22 was an act of insanity, but then when I saw the atlasmix, I realized it was actually an act of genius. Nobody in their right mind thought FDM could do that!!! HOW DID YOU KNOWW????

What's your opinion of PLA vs PETG for printing especially big cube centers? Both types of centers have strength issues: 1 - the hanging ones which are typically composed of a head, neck and root, sometimes if it's a T-center it has wings. The problem with these is that they tend to be very small and thin. 2 - the middle one where it looks like a big umbrella. The problem is that the pieces pull the umbrella upward, or the umbrella pushes the pieces down (whichever, or both due to newton's third law), but the spring/screw assembly pushes the foot of the umbrella down, which providing tow opposing forces that would eventually rip the center apart. (I believe this is related, though not identical to how the 22x22 died, and I had a proportional 7x7 that died the same way) Based on what I've seen online PETG is more flexible and temperature resistant, but has more stringing and is harder to print. There is some disagreement on strength however. I've only ever tried PLA.
@matt.bahner
@matt.bahner Год назад
1) Many FDM issues are easy to fix if you just scale everything up. Most designers refuse to accept this and print their puzzles substantially too small. 2) The 20x20 exploded because of a tolerance issue actually. It turns out that slicers add 0.3mm of plastic to faces with support material. This offset added up with many pieces and created an extreme outward force 3) PETG is actually not hard to print, in some ways it's easier than PLA. If you use a powder coated PEI sheet and are diligent about using a filament dryer, it basically prints like PLA with better bed adhesion. It also is way stronger, more heat resistant, and creates a pleasant turning quality on puzzles. I've experimented a lot with both, and seriously, just use PETG. It's so much better.
