Please pray for my brother. He is dealing with depression and has been in and out of mental institutions for years. He is taking different pills for his depression. He has also practiced new age and eastern religions in the past but is now starting to believe in God. Pray that God would save him and release him from the chains that satan has bound my brother in. it is so beautiful how God takes all these cultural details that seem "bad", and uses them to elevate and bring true justice to all the people! The idea that He calls us ALL firstborn because we are clothed with the blood of Jesus (so we are all the same), is in it of itself a paradox, but it is the truth by which God wants us to walk! I am not saying that we are Gods like Jesus was and is, but spiritually He has given us the coverage of His blood so that we are recognised as Him, as long as we strive to become more like Him also. So yes there is The firstborn of God, who is Jesus, and then there is an army of smaller (not Gods) firstborns that are all equal to the eyes of the Father!! it is such a perfect story of unity, equality and love! Praise be to the Lord God all mighty!!

I’m right near the end of the podcast on the Bible Project app (shameless plug) and John is commenting on Jesus being the first born of all creation; it was here that I realised also that Jesus was the first born of 1) Mary, but also of 2) the Holy Spirit of God. I thought that was interesting and kind of effects the meaning of first born of creation for me. Thought I’d share

14:03 I just wanted to add, since we're sympathizing that the first born male isn't just chosen over the female for patriarchal reasons. Women got married into other families so the first born female inheriting most of the family assets was the same as giving their inheritance to another family.

I dont think the introduction is quite right. If i understand it correctly they think that the first born is a middle eastern patriatic power structure build by men? I dont think that is true. The firstborn is what God created, even in sacrifices the first born is the one that needs to be sacrificed. God says all what is first belongs to me. So it is not a their own idea. It came from God. However the firstborn right could be given away as we have seen with Jacob and Esau. Jesus is the first born of Mary and is the first to have everlasting life. The firstborn does mean something in Gods eyes.

My moms side of my family (I’m 1/2 Micronesian) is very very strict on first born sort of stuff. From little things like they get the front seat of the car lol to things like they get the land that is owned by their parents immediately after their parents die. Things are different for me tho…I feel like although my dad doesn’t exactly pick a favorite, I just definitely have a closer relationship with my dad than my older sister. (He’s not Micronesian btw.) About my sister…Let’s just say she’s not as kind to others and is always getting in trouble in the work place for picking fights left n right. This is also how it’s been with her growing up towards myself and between her n my dad. To add to it, whenever my dad does stuff for me or helps me out, she always gets an angry jealousy. And since she is angry so much, when my dad finally does try to make her feel special, she casts it aside….at the same time while complaining she deserves more as first born child. What I see is in the same way God’s chosen ppl were first but when Jesus came they rejected Him and then the rest of the world is able to receive this Gift (they were the 2nd). But just like my sister, the love from the Father is still there and available to those who believe and receive it…don’t push it away because of stubborn, hard hearts. That’s what this all comes down to: the condition of one’s own heart, birth rights actually mean nothing if u really think about it. God reads our hearts…yes He watches over us and that doesn’t just mean as protection but also that He sees everything; we cannot hide our sins. Let’s always remember to repent and stay ready for the day He comes knocking. Our hearts need to stay open and full of love for Him and others. ❤

God is not opposed to the first born law. It is His Law that He instituted. When someone other than the first born is chosen, the elder brother or brothers invariably disqualify themselves in some way. The Messiah of course did not disqualify Himself in any way.

I’ve experienced a denomination which seems to place more importance in a diocese than worshipping God our Heavenly Father.

Adam was the first born human, Jesus was God’s first born child. I believe the references to this word first born is used to refer to both man and Jesus. Have to take the time to say Tim and John you guys are awesome and this is by far the best podcast I’ve ever engaged in. Thank you.

I know Jesus is the true and rightful firstborn of God. But isn’t there an element of Adam representing the first born of God in a Sonship roll. One of the Gospels genealogy tracks all the way back to Adam stating Adam the son of God. Even though Jesus was before Adam when it comes to his role as son of God isn’t Jesus kind of fulfilling a second born role in the biblical narrative. With Adam fulfilling the canonical firstborn role. Therefore staying true to the consistent Bible narrative of God inverting the firstborn status?

I heard the term "invert" more than the term "redeem", and "redeem" seems more appropriate when talking about patterns and Christ's fulfillment of those patterns.

It’s my understanding that law of primogeniture stems from the problems that arise from splitting property equally among children. This would fractionalize their land and wealth over the generations. Future offspring with Less may also be inclined to start ownership disputes to get more for their family. Families that practiced equity would thus likely dilute their power over time and get wiped out.

Not exactly on the lines of the “First born” theme, but I instantly think of how Saul was the first Human King of Israel, and yet it was David as Israel’s 2nd King whose throne was established forever, even by way of Christ Jesus. It’s revealing in that becoming a Man/Woman after God’s on Heart should be the ultimate goal of all in any Leadership position! Hallelujah! I Love God’s Word!🧐☺️🙏🙏

Yahuah is not overturning man's power structure, it may be an effect of his action but it is certainly not his goal. Instead, he shows us that being firstborn is not physical but spiritual; not the age of the body but the maturity of character. This is also reinforced in the book of Wisdom of Solomon where it is written that old age to Yahuah is not grey hair or wrinkled skin but the level of a man's familiarity with him. Notice when we describe someone as childish? The body may have fully grown but the spirit lacks familiarity with Yahuah's character hence they don't know how to act properly. And that is our sole purpose on earth, to bring to fullness the character of Yahuah that he filled us with; our sense of mercy, generosity, justice, etc so that we may become whole/one just like Yahuah is whole/one.

Obedience unto death first and last. Jesus didn’t allow God to build him up to become ruler material and then choose to not obey God like creation, which is to be the only begotten. It’s to maintain servitude in this life trusting that your reward is in heaven while you’re being renewed, by the power of God to continue as a servant/leader through trails, tribulations and suffering with patience which are at war with the flesh, but in the midst of these things you discover life and the secret to being content in all things, the first begotten is the work of God and it’s "begotteness” is its constant keeping in line with God which is to be in truth and spirit.

Father God is forever and always the greatest

Hi Bible project teachers, love all the work you continue to do and when I become more financially stable I will be donating because I truly love how you address the Bible. Teaching from the writer's point of view. Reason for my comment, I do know being first at the table or who ate first was important in some families because the portions became less as the plate was passed around. If you are the firstborn and work all day they would have first dibs. Plz, correct me if I'm wrong with the information I can not cite because I can't remember where I read this.

My parents always said the first born should get the biggest inheritance because their most mistakes are made on them 😂 But on a serious note, the first born child also grows up with a much stronger inclination towards servitude than the second or third etc kids. Maybe there's something there about servant leadership? In relation to the second child, the first gets taught to "be careful and help with" the younger, to be kind and mindful that their younger sib doesn't understand what they are doing as well yet so forgive them their ignorance where the second grows up very quickly realising they need to compete with the first in order to "get what they deem should be theirs"

Interesting that in 3 John, Diotropes is said by the apostle John to have the "desire to be first". He refused to welcome John, one of the original 12 Jewish disciples. Diotrophes is a gentile. What are the implications here regarding the division between jewish and gentile church.

Basically, God doesn’t care what order you come in. Whether first, or last. What He cares about is your character. God is looking for generals of faith to lead His army against the enemy. To tackle the spiritual strangleholds, to allow Him to work through to touch the hearts and minds of the lost. First borns…typically kinda suck at giving God the glory. 😂 Also, Jesus is known for being the second man-the first was Adam, where death entered. So, while Jesus was there in the beginning-truly the Firstborn among firstborns-He still was in some sense, not the first.

Solomon was not even Batsheeba's first either! Her first son died as an infant as a punishment for David's sin... and since Batsheeba lost both her husband and her son in consequence of David's hubris, it says David "went to console her" and got her pregnant (with Solomon). I think it was God's way to console her, for her child became then became the chosen one to lead Israel after David.

Ok, I'm really confused... You're saying that "earlier human history" was hunter gather, before we settled and farmed? That's absolutely not what the Bible says... Genesis had a VERY different account. Adam and Eve were told by God Himself, when they were booted from Eden that they would have to farm to raise provisions as the ground would no longer naturally provide for them. The first family was a farming family.

That was a good discussion guys, thx...I have but one issue, well it connects to others, but with the Eternal Son-ship of Jesus. How do you weigh it against Isaiah 9:6 Everlasting Father and against Revelation 3:6, Jesus speaking as the Spirit to the churches. Even John 14 where Jesus reveals the mystery of the Godhead to his fledgling disciples. Later to be recalled thru that same Spirit, authenticating and validating the Acts of the Apostles; even as Rev.3:6 confirms. These key scriptures and biblical language that only speaks of Jesus reigning as LORD forever, even as the Everlasting Father, who has been Spirit twice(Gen 1:2): the only solid identification of Messiah, yesterday, today and forever...I don't care for councils, creeds, denominations (fractures) or the opinions of old fathers. I understand the Bible and the revelation of Jesus Christ to me, as the Spirit. Even what the Son of man and Son of God meant in his time; as he was the Lamb of God as provided for the Abrahamic sacrifice. He is not the Eternal Lamb either, but the reigning King, which is symbolized by a Lion wearing a crown... You're the Bible project, but like other teachers and students of study, you layer the beliefs of men on top of the given scripture of God.

Birth order and gender!!!

I’ve a question: if the Septuagint was ‘tuned to the key of greek culture’ and the NT was a marriage of the two… are the references to greek mythology purely symbolic? I’ve always thought that most cultures tell a similar story of the history told in Genesis. Especially the Genesis 6 story. I presumed that the Heavenly host that rebelled and came into human women were synonymous with the story of the Greek titans, and so forth, and the wars that ensued between them and their offspring being one and the same story but told through a different cultural lens.

Does the bible give any advice to those 2nd born sons who deal with the insecurity that is inherent with this position in life?

Front seat you get to play with the radio and things, you get the big windshield... Back seat you just get a side view, no radio and looking at the front of the back seat... Only solution is to drive a bus then the kids will think its most macho to get the back seat

Your spoke of all the first born sons of Israel being specially belonging to Yahweh. For a purpose other than rulership in society? Therefore younger sons were given that rulership? Jesus as first born did not seek human rulership. He was given it only after His resurrection?

So the true 1st born does get double portions, interesting.

God defines blessings, man trys to subvert these blessings for who THEY want. God looks for worth. He isn't putting firstborns down for some birth order thing.?

God says we are brothers and sisters.
