This is a hard message to digest...and to preach...also a comforting one. When I think of Salvation and how the Lord has chosen me all I can do is fall on my face and weep and cry out for thanks unto Him because without His election of me I would be doomed....Oh glory be to God for His grace and mercy in choosing me...I am awestruck to the point of being overwhelmed whenever the reality of God's Sovereign election comes to mind...Hallelujah! Thank You Jesus!

@@Philip__325 I have went out and studied the verses on Calvinism and I can say it's not biblical. Take John 6:44 John 6:44 English Standard Version 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. That is to the apostles. They also don't realize the Holy Spirit wasn't yet given. So they couldn't have been totally depraved in regenerated to come to Christ. It says No one Can come, CAN come. It doesn't mean they have to come. You can make the draw as hard as you want but it doesn't mean they have to. Now Jesus draws all men. But not all men come so we know it doesn't mean they have to come. John 12:32 English Standard Version 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” God Bless everyone and for calvinist I the attractiveness to Calvinism. He took the punishment so now we stand right before God and are brought into His eternal kingdom. Jesus was raised from the dead on the third day showing that we are justified in Him who now lives. Yes this flesh still has to die, and there may be pain and hard times along the way, but we now have the hope, the guarantee that we will live forever in Heaven because of what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross. A.W. Tozer “God sovereignly decreed that man should be free to exercise moral choice, and man from the beginning has fulfilled that decree by making his choice between good and evil. When he chooses to do evil, he does not thereby countervail the sovereign will of God but fulfills it, inasmuch as the eternal decree decided not which choice the man should make but that he should be free to make it. If in His absolute freedom God has willed to give man limited freedom, who is there to stay His hand or say, 'What doest thou?' Man’s will is free because God is sovereign. A God less than sovereign could not bestow moral freedom upon His creatures. He would be afraid to do so.”

I don't disagree with what is being preached, but I wonder how we are to apply this to our lives. Election applied to our own personal conversion makes sense. The problem comes to applying the strict theory to passages like Matthew 22. Election is part of the mystery of God, and I find it strange when pastors preach it in isolation. There are local churches who won't even try to evangelize, because of election - God chooses. In their faith statement they actually refuse to call all men to repentance. The great commission does not really make practical sense if we take the raw theory to its extreme.

@@mangs9940Romans 9-11 is one discourse. 9 outlines a partial hardening of the Gentiles for Israel's sake. 10-11 outlines a partial hardening of Israel for the Gentile's sake. And 11 reconciles the two into a disepensation where God can now "show mercy to all." Calvinists treat Romans 9 like a standalone discourse which leads to taking it drastically out of context.

1. Scripture is from God and God cannot lie. (2 Tim. 3:16; Tit. 1:2) 2. Predestination is of existing saints to adoption/glorification, not sinners to conversion. (Eph. 1:5, 11; Rom. 8:23, 29-30) 3. Election is to service, calling and purpose, not to salvation. (Isa. 42:1; Acts 9:15; Rom. 11:28). Eph 1:4 says, "According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:" The Calvinist reword is "chosen TO BE in him unto salvation." "Holy and without blame" describe quality of service, and the word, "should" involves an exhortation to be such, not a decree. Salvation is not mentioned in Eph 1:4. 4. Adoption is the future redemption of the body, not conversion. (Rom. 8:23, 15-17; Gal. 4:1-6, 1 John 3:2) 5. Sinners become sons of God through the new birth, not through adoption. (John 1:12-13) 6. There are two callings: Gospel and vocational, not inward or outward or effectual or general, etc… (2 Thess. 2:14; Eph. 4:1; Rom. 8:28; 2 Cor. 5:20) 7. Atonement is not synonymous with salvation. Christ’s death reconciles the world in universal atonement but Christ's life is what saves. (Rom. 5:10; 1 Cor. 15:17) 8. It is a false dichotomy to assert that the universal set of theological thought is divided into Calvinism and Arminianism. We Bible believers reject both. Arminianism is Calvinism light. False dichotomies are used by the Calvinist to map the opponent to an unpalatable label and thus infer that Calvinism is the only alternative. 9. God is pleased to save those that believe, not cause belief in those he saves. (1 Cor. 1:21; Rom. 10:9-10) 10. Grace is a ubiquitous reality, not a selective force. (Tit. 2:11-13) 11. Grace is just fine on its own as found in scripture. Any modifier such as “sovereign,” “irresistible,” or “prevenient” indicates superimposition of an ideology by someone who is either confused or attempting to confuse. (Rom. 3:24; 5:15; Jn. 1:16; Tit. 2:11-13) 12. If one is born with total inability to receive God's life-giving truth and then passed over by the calvigod who unconditionally elected not to extend the gnostic spark of regeneration to that one to enable/cause faith, then there is no better excuse (Rom 1:20.) 13. God's Word and God's life-giving truth of the gospel are the enablers of faith - "...the holy scriptures, which are ABLE to make thee wise unto salvation..." "But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name." The 2nd person "thee" and "ye" apply to YOU, whoever you are. 14. The gift in Eph 2:8 is eternal life, not faith (Rom 6:23.) 15. God is all loving, He loves all (without exception.) (John 3:16).

The strawman that he has created is saying that somehow involving humans in the salvation process, somehow diminishes gods glory. That, indeed is a strawman. The only way it’s a diminishing of God’s glory is if you perceive it as such. Having things take place as God has designed them to take place does not diminish his glory, only fulfills it.

I have free will to believe or not. I believed and He elected from the foundations of the earth because He knew I would believe. Calvinism is a satanic perversion of the Gospel. Curiously enough, if Calvinism is true, which from a Biblical perspective it obviously is not, but if it were, god (small g because the god of Calvinism does not exist) is literally forcing me to write this. I have no choice in the matter so why, as a Calvinist, would you object? Well, because god is forcing you to. What rank nonsense. It is god arguing with himself. 13:50 - you said your salvation began in eternity past. That means you believe your salvation began by Gods choice to put you in Christ, which means you believe salvation happens by Gods choice outside of Christ. This is very wrong. We have NO spiritual blessing outside of Christ, and the only way we are joined with Christ is through our individual belief/ faith. Ephesians 1: 13 aWHEN you believed.

The bible literally starts with God giving Adam a choice. Run from the lie of calvinisim. I guess I was predestined to love Jesus and hate calvinisim. So blame God for my unbelief in Calvinisim.

Yes, Adam and Eve had untainted wills unaffected by a sinful nature. Yet, look what they chose anyways. Sin. After that, Adam plunged us into slavery of Sin. What can a slave of sin do to free himself? Nothing.

You presume I am not a believer in Jesus. How arrogant is your statement. Calvinist have not idea what scripture says. The scripture is very clear. Jesus died for everyone. Everyone who choose to call on Jesus will be saved. God wants everyone to be saved. But most choose their sin over the free gift of Jesus shed blood.

10 as it is written: "None is righteous, no, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one." (Romans 3:10-12, ESV)

Everyone who sins is a slave to sin. A slave must serve its master. Sinners serve sin... willingly, joyfully yet without any ability to resist their master... and no ability to chose Christ.

Did he say anything about Calvinism in this sermon? I didn't hear anything about John Calvin, but what I heard was him expositing Scripture rightly. God says He will have mercy on who He will have mercy. It's God's world and HE is sovereign. HE is in control. Boy, we all want to tell God what to do. We all deserve hell. His sovereign Grace is beautiful, and the fact that He chose anyone is amazing. That's not something Calvin made up. That is what the Bible says. James Coates simply walks through the text, he doesn't talk about "Calvinism" -- He's simply reading the Scripture. But people who hate "Calvinism" won't listen to what Pastor Coates is saying. He's just reading the Scripture.

I think there is something being entirely overlooked here. He may need to look at it again.i suggest that much of what we assume applies to all who are, or will be saved, is actually referring to his disciples. The apostles. “You did not choose me” speaking to his disciples.

Election of God is a biblical doctrine. And its beautiful. If you struggle with it, keep note of Psalm 139, and Jeremiah 1. Also keep in mind John the Baptist. God chose him in the womb. Youre no different. He did nothing good or bad, yet God chose him. Sound familiar? Romans 9, before they did anything good or bad... God loved jacob and hated Esau. Same principle. God chose us. Meaning we didnt choose him. Too many scriptures back up the fact that you had nothing to do with your salvation. Nothing.

If you feel that foreknowledge means God saw beforehand you would believe. Then what does that mean? It means he looked at something good YOUD do and chose you. It started with you, not God. Why would God need to choose you if you chose Him first? Its ridiculous guys. God chose you, BECAUSE you chose Him. Its backwards.
