This is the full length animated short at 19 mins.
Screened at
Long Island International Film Expo
Singapore Toy, Games & Comic Convention
Oaxaca FilmFest
CREATIVE ARTS FILM FESTIVAL
13th TBS Digicon6
and SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 Computer Animation Festival
and didn't get into loads others. But if you liked it, please share the love of giant robots and monsters. And leave any feedback or comments below.
The objective to make this short is really simple. I wanted to make a animation about the giant robots and monsters from my childhood and memories of living in a kampong (village) with my grandfather and many cousins.
Obviously I hope to have some awesome fights between an giant robot and monster. While at the same time have a story that can be related to those early memories.
Main influence for this is the old giant movies and the old box covers of model kits and toys as well as the old shophouses and wide open spaces that I remembered.
Nothing too deep or complicated. Hope simply just to entertain without feeling having their intelligence insulted and that people feel its worth spending 19 mins of their lives watching it.
See the "making of" at godaizer.com/videos/making-of-godaizer/
Note: In Singlish/Hokkien/Cantonese with some English Subtitles.
Directed and Produced by Hillary Yeo. With support from Media Development Authority of Singapore.
Sound and Music by StereoImage Pte Ltd
Thank you.

Reminds me of those old super robot anime like mazinger z, voltes v, Voltron etc i really enjoyed the idea of the robot begin portrayed as beacon of hope to the people back in the day a concept executed in right way

Nice tribute to the classic "giant robo" shows and a worthy addition to the genre in itself. The father and son's relationship is conveyed with no real dialogue, just visuals; a difficult thing to pull off. I also like how the rise and fall of the dad's career as inventor / hero is shown via the articles on the bulletin board. An entire heroic era compressed into a few briefly-glimpsed words and images.

It's 2018 and I just saw this gem of a short animation now? Man, I must of been living under a rock! This is gold right here! What a awesome Robot vs Giant Monster story. The non dialog really made the focus on the visuals even better. A good story is sometimes told better through imagery rather than through words. Job well done!

Not a huge fan of 'bad guy creature for no particular reason', movies, but I did like this one. The story, telling without dialogue, the care given to the faces, details, the music, all came together to create a work that compliments the efforts. Bravo! Great sound track, too, no probs here. And, yes Gigantor, and Godzilla, whose influences have endured decades!

Loved this. It had such an old school feel to mecha anime. Also, it was well written enough that you did not need dialogue but you still knew what the characters' emotions were. But come on, Singapore is not big enough to have a monster/mecha fight. No way we have a big enough area for that to happen without more collateral damage. But that is a minor distraction. If I had one problem, it was the sound of the monster and mecha hitting each other, there was not enough weight to their impacts, soundwise. However, the rest of the sound and music design were awesome.

For an independent movie it's pretty damn good. The monster is especially well animated. The only thing lacking is decent audio effects. The fight between two towering creatures that sounds like a light tap on the shoulder really mars the whole effort. Though i understand that it's not as easy to create decent sounds as one might think. Nevertheless, great effort.

A beautiful and fun short, particularly if you grew up watching giant monsters and robots fight, and no dialog could have enhanced it. Everything that needed to be said was handled with the visuals. Too often with movies, shorts and features, the storytellers use dialog as a crutch to convey parts of the story because they don't have the skills to tell it visually. But this was completely understandable without one word spoken and by that puts it head and shoulders above many other. It shows the people who worked on this project really understand their medium and have a bright future if they choose to pursue a career in the visual storytelling markets.

I agree with you, although it could have been so much better if these giants had movements like giants, instead of actually very quick humans. Also, the scales were off a lot, for instance when coming down the highway, one foot should have covered it shoulder to shoulder instead of looking like a sidewalk stroll.

Thank you for kind words ! A geek fact for you. The design of the main robot in the short are more from the "Super Robot" Genre rather then the "Real Robot" genre. it seemed there was a bad history with the godaizer in the past of the old man. things got lower and lower on payments and the godaizers help just didnt seem needed anymore. so it got a bit run down. it seemed like the kid was taking the old mans place in training. just in-case something happened. or...in memory of good ol days. but at the end it seemed more then that. it seemed like he was looking for a final way to put the godaiser aside. and at the end it seemed like he did^^; a rather nice lawn ornament^^; otherwise well constructed and the plot devices were used well considering there were no voices you were still able to tell a story in such a long length without direct telling of it. great piece of work

Great for what it was, but it could have really benefited from some dialog. When the robot was being assembled a little chatter could have really expressed the desperate nature of their situation. "But the right side attunement actuator..." "We'll have to use the ones from the Z16." "They've got a A13X coupling." "Use the conveyer we rigged for the UT8 and just remember you don't have elbow fumbling on that side." A few lines about how this is his first and only mission. Not a lot, I think a ton of story was told without it. Also a scratch on the boys had after would be good. Okay critic mode of. Good short.
@hilscreate
@hilscreate 9 лет назад
Hi, thanks very much for your comments. The challenge was to not need voices or dialog to articulate the story. On hindsight, some shots of tension on the faces of the characters during assembly would have conveyed the same emotional reaction. As for the injury after... We had a version where the boy got a huge bandage on his head but I decided that it distracts from the punchline of the huge gapping hole. And again on hindsight, that would have worked better. Next one will be better. Hopefully.

Anyone else notice that the missiles fired by the jet fighters were larger than the planes that fired them when they hit the monster?

the missiles are equipped with space compression technology, once it's fired the space compression will decompress and the missile will return to its original size. That's how you fight a 50m monster with a 10m jet fighter.

Thank you for making such beautiful works of love! The small films industry is showing the Disney's of the world that they CANNOT have their way.

Pacific rim and its multi.million dollar budget was just put to shame by this 19min movie and its tiny budget. Hollywood can keep throwing millions at movies but a good script will always beat a big budget everyday of the week. Look at Star Wars for example. Those 3 prequels with Young Anakin cost over 100 million to make. To make that crap with Jar jar binks and a petulant winny Anakin whose acting and dialogue lines were PAINFUL to watch... Then go watch FAN MADE movies on RU-vid. Their length is limited by copyright and Lucas but what they made within those 10-20min movies...was amazing and BETTER than the prequels. Fans LOVE the star wars universe. They craft a script out of love, NOT to appeal to as many potential movie goers as possible in an obvious cash grab because then you end up with a flashy film that is so topical it could be any franchise [replace names and it could be a Star trek film instead] and not something lovely from cannon lore. Fan films tell a story about STAR WARS, not current politics hidden in a film...Mary Sue

seriously japan get your shit together, just because you can build giant robots it doesn't mean you have to create monsters to fight with. Jesus.
