When I worked at GameStop circa 2006-2008, we got God Hand in stock every now and then. It would sell almost immediately. I never understood why until I played it. What a game!

Reminds me of when Toriyama created a new Dragonball movie because he didn't want Evolution to be the last piece of Dragonball content created. When a product is so bad it pushes you to make a new one so you can leave on a good note. That's what Godhand sounds like.

This feels so depressing now that Babylon's Fall is looking like it's going to be a massive trainwreck that could potentially kill the company. Here's hoping things work out, but OOF, being a Platinum fan in 2021 is going to be a bit rough....

@Dracocrusher imo tracing back platinum games history it's not always impressive actually, not every games is a commercial success, and some were even commercial failure in comparison. like max anarchy, some license games like avatar and ninja turtles, scalebound, star fox zero just for an example but what's impressive is they always able to get back with a bang. They already has massive cult followers and games that make people coming back. Being platinum fans has been always been rough lol

What an era. I loved the hell out of Godhand. 👊🏼 I had so many laughs with this game. The fact you could customize Gene's fighting style to your liking was also super innovative and fun. And the animations? More charismatic and snappy than I see in most games today. Excellent video as always McMuscles. 10/10

IGN has a crap ton of different people reviewing different titles. There is no one big monolith that all believes the same thing and makes sure scores line up between all their reviewers. The guy just found the controls and lack of enemy variety to be more problematic than other outlets did.

They'll often be forced to review, for example, games in genres that they heavily dislike. It becomes very difficult to stay unbiased when this happens, so I wouldn't put too much blame on the specific person who wrote the IGN God Hand review. Whoever was in charge of delegating games to reviewers, though? Yeah, feel free to blame them as much as you want.

I love this game so much. My mom used to train muay thai and this game got her interrested in all the different fight styles it got. I'll allways remeber her liking the game and watching me play a bit, i got a tattooe of the god hand skull for this memory.

I remember randomly seeing this game at a GameStop and picking it up along with Budokai Tenkaichi 2 (which is the game I went to get). Saw the cover art and that's what got caught my eye. Then I saw the Capcom logo on it. Yeah, insta-buy for me at the time. I bought anything Capcom.

i remember this game getting mostly critically panned when it came out but after seeing the PR for it I knew deep down it couldn't have been that bad. Definitely a top 10 PS2 game.

The greatest thing about Final Fight Streetwise is that it led to the creation of God Hand. Amazing. I've been waiting a long time for your to cover this, Matt. God Hand is one of my all-time favorite games. I was a reviewer back then, and thought the IGN review was utter garbage. I gave it an 8/10 when I covered it. It feels like a lifetime ago...

as far as I can tell, the interview was about how they pivoted to focus on the humor when they were advertising or discussing the game (as opposed to the hardcore gameplay)

This is a game that deserves at least a remastered. Mikami is an excellent project leader, he flourish the best of the creative minds that work with him and they always manage to create some amazing and (specially) fun games

Randomly purchased it in 2008. Didn't know what to do with it but I was used to the re1 tank controls. It was so hard at first. Glad I got patient and learned the gameplay. One of the most frustratingly fun game in the PS2. Played all the difficulties including kick me. Almost busted the circle button of my pad due to mashing.

It's interesting to see how Godhand was seen as divisive, when it basically took over ,(for a short while) , the gaming cafe's in Nairobi. It's probably faded into most people's memory but I remember growing up and a lot of my peers loving the hell out of this game.

This game is BRUTAL but very stimulating. The sense of humor is a bit dated, but still has great moments. Also, aside from the classic protoman battles, godhand has the best rival boss battle EVER. Sorry, DMC fanboys, Vergil has nothing on Azel.

About the only real criticism I'd give it, is that the first boss shouldn't have had you 2 on 1 before you're barely learned the camera and the mechanics (and before you can really buy a lot of new moves without lucky betting!)

I was a dumb kid and skipped on buying this game at retail when I had the chance. I played it a couple years later and never forgave myself. If there's one game I'd like to see a What Happened? of, it's Anarchy Reigns. Someone has to know why the NA release (January 2013) was pushed back so often despite having a full English dub/translation in the original Japanese release (July 2012).

By the way, can you make a video about Binary Domain from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio? It was a pretty interesting shooter with an unique setting, but it was overlooked by many when it came out. Now, it entered Xbox backwards compatibility program and there's a chance to revise it.

Ahh the good old god hand. I love that combo system and the dodge/dash cancels, the game has a surprising amount of depth to the combat if you're willing to put up with the jank.

Man, I loved this game! Played it three times back then. I'm glad you already had this covered. God Hand is one example of goated games that directors pour their hearts into and make an awesome product, which is not seen in most games these days.

Honestly, if you ignore the Crapcom logo and release date, Godhand is more or less a killer Indie Title. It's one of the very, very, very few games with major branding on it that succeeded in doing so. On another note, if you handle it like an indie game you truly have something unique. A few dents and scratches here or there, yeeeees but it really does best what it set out to do, TO THIS DAY.

As a kid, I had gotten a game from Walmart and it was dog shit, so I returned it and decided I might as well give this Godhand game a try and if I don't like it then I'll just return this too. So by random occurrence I got a game I absolutely fell in love with. Such great memories of this game. Wish it didn't get stolen and I wish more it wasn't so expensive now.

The shuttering of Clover sadly locked some of the best IPs away forever. I always refer to Okami as the Best Wolf-Based Zelda Game of 2006, because it absolutely blows Twilight Princess out of the water. It's the first game that really seemed like a direct Zelda competitor in terms of game design, but it adds so much on top of that. At this point in time, I think it and Godhand are almost universally loved and respected, but we'll never see another of either of them. I wish Platinum could just buy the rights to both of them.

I'm just glad God Hand exist and came out when it did. It was a tough game for young me, but it was the sickest shit I had played since DMC and ZoE. It really is a huge blast to play and even today there isn't anything even close to it, at least when it comes to it's characters and gameplay.
