This video is a demonstration of the capabilities of the Godin Multiac Concert Grand Guitar in it's Midi capacity. Custom RMC electronics with 13-pin connector for direct control of Roland GR Series and Axon AX100 guitar synths.I am using a Roland GR55 Guitar Synthesiser as a midi outlet only (not using the patches/sounds on this occasion). From there I run a midi out into my RME Fireface 802 audio interface into Cubase Pro 9 (DAW).
I have demonstrated some different sound patches/samplers from Native Instruments Kontakt 5 Sample Player; Session Horns Pro, Vocalise 1(Heavyosity), Grandeur and The Gent pianos, FM8 synth and Session Strings pro. In addition I have used Steinberg's Halion Symphonic Orchestra and UVI's Gypsy Jazz sampler. Finally I played the Flugalhorn patch from Blues Street Brass by Indigenus.

11:11 The brass really sounds phenomenal. "...and who wouldn't want to be a full brass section?" So true, especially for us trumpet players (probably all brass) who are used to only having control over an individual stream of sound. I believe he said it is with Kontakt 5's Session Horns Pro. Thanks for the demo and information!

That sounded great! I own a Godin LGX-SA and the Multiac, I love them both. They are the best-kept secrets in guitars and I don't understand why. They're made in Canada with top-grade components and woods. The SA has 3 outputs (Electric, Acoustic, and GK), the fretwork is precise and they sound incredible. The price is right as well.

I own the steel string version with the lipstick Seymour Duncan pickup. They're well crafted instruments, no issues in 8+ years. My takeaway from owning one is that they do everything you can think of pretty well. No real outstanding features other than the vast array of things you can do with it. The midi is a tricky beast, you have to alter your playstyle to suit the type of instrument you're trying to emulate, so a bit of a learning curve. Brass always sounds unacceptably bad to me. Strings are difficult to make smooth progressions with. That's really just a midi problem in general though. Human articulation can't be done justice with samples. The pianos can sound really good, the Rhodes is one of my favs. I bought it to play in a cover band for maximum versatility and it achieved that competently. Its also a great studio Swiss army knife. *edit: I just recently changed out the Duncan lipstick for a purple EMG lace sensor and I'm much happier with the tone. The lace is much more crisp and versatile than the lipstick, which was pretty muddy. The swap was very difficult though. Both pickups were an extremely tight fit and there was very little slack in the wiring to work with. I suggest taking it to a professional for such work. The electronics and wiring inside are all very well done, but it's obvious they didn't have modifications in mind.

I have been a songwriter for decades and made 16 or so studio recordings using nashville musicians mostly in the country and americana vain. I have only heard of midi and was mostly just confused and curious about midi. I have built my own home studio over the last six years and of course did quite a bit of research on what is available these days and of course have heard of many of the companies you have utilized in this video . But this is the first time I have actually heard any of the actual instruments and I am totally blown away by what you have exposed me too lol I never dreamed it was this convincing. wow!! is all I can say and where in the hell have I been? I guess I was pretty well convinced I would have to start taking keyboard lessons etc. I do play guitar and I have heard you could use guitar as a controller but I have always thought it would be quite "cheesy" for lack of a better word and would be used at best to express arrangement ideas. I am so glad you have opened up my mind FINALLY to this amazing technology and I thank you so much. Excellent video nice playing

I have a Casio MIDI guitar, which I haven't played for several years, but after watching this video I think I will give it another go. My MIDI setup does allow for vibrato if required on strings, but it tends not to track too well, so probably best not to use it. Also you can assign a different instrument to each string, so for example you could have bass guitar on the six and five strings, then another instrument for the other four strings. The strange thing was when I played in a live situation, with a piano sound, nobody really noticed it was coming from a guitar. Good in one way I suppose, but bad in another! Perhaps they weren't really listening. Oh well, I still got paid! Anyway thanks Andrew for the video. Apart from getting different sounds, you have two adjust your playing to sound like a particular instrument.

Very well done, Andrew. You showed what a powerful creative tool a guitar can be in arranging and layering sounds. I used to own a Godin midi guitar and Roland synth, but like so many musicians, had to sell it off when I hit some hard times... Of course I regret it now, but maybe someday soon, I'll be able to afford another Godin/Roland midi guitar rig... For all the haters out there. It's just wonderful to be able to create multi-instrument demos or ideas. When performing "LIVE!" one has to be careful to not over-do any of this because it can get old quickly and rather "Gimmicky" ... I LOVE to perform with other musicians, but let's face it... Most clubs and venues have paying the same sh*t money for 30 plus years, and sometimes it's just not possible to hire a keyboard player, horn players, bass etc... It's a wonderful tool for being able to translate an instrument that you play exceptionally well to other instruments and creates even more inspiration for writers and producers and gives "LIVE!" performers some compelling and provocative backing sounds... .You've done a great and play very tasty. Thanks for the video, mate! Cheers!

When I close my eyes and listen, the tones are undoubtably piano, brass, synth, strings, electric bass, etc., but the phrasing is awkward. I can totally see using this to sketch out ideas for a demo. However, I would still have real players come in to overdub almost everything, because the midi parts sound so clumsy.
@AndrewKeeping
@AndrewKeeping Год назад
I agree there is nothing like a live performer. However, following the sketched out ideas, if you go into the DAW and tweak around with the midi a little working on velocity and tempo mapping, you can get a very good final result. These videos are just demoing the initial phase.

Thats PERFECT! I am going to put one of those Guitars on my Wish List (which I actually have made one awhile ago). Andrew You have Taught me SO MUCH by this Video Sir! I UNDERSTAND! I have been having an Illiteracy regarding MIDI, and havent done anything with it in my Studio (except I got the cable hooked up from My Tascam DP24 to Interface) And I got a new pair today for My Keyboars to my Interface BUT, i didnt know WHAT I was going to do it after that because I didnt get it, but now I do! That Is SWEEPING, with Your Guitar, now THAT, I Can Do! ...I just Got some MAGIX VSTs...that work the same way that Youre demonstrating (besides being Accompaniment, that I'd have to Accompany, rather) AND since My Instrument is the Guitar, that would be perfect for me.!....I will attempt to use my (cheapy) Casio Keyboard now with The VSTs )casio is Midi capable though). Now I know I say, "cheapy" or inexpensive", but I really Do Appreciate my Gear & I know that with FX like these, My Music will be Better & beautiful too, I hope. Thanks Andrew!

Andrew: this is a great video. Thanks for getting me started. Finally, i got time to work on it. I still have the Godin SA guitar which I connect directly to a Roland Juno DS with all those modern sound as compared to the Other synth. I also got a Fishman triple play which as a usb port so it extremely easy to connect to Any computer and other synthesizer. I moved to Logic Pro which has must better support than Cubase. Now, i play music with midi arrangements improvising on top and selecting instruments as you need.

Andrew, I am a Composer and produce my own music. I have been considering on attempting to Obtain The "Audio Production Certificate" from FULL SAIL University (Florida) (Online)..its a 5 Month Course that is divided into 5 categories. I do Understand 4 of them..but the 5th is MIDI.... and besides, as an Audio Engineer, I am aware of the need to be basically familiarized with MIDI, as well as any of the other components of having my Own Studio. You have helped to Breakthru here, to Understand & Appreciate MIDI as the result...I always thought it was Tedious & a drudgery from what Ive seen. I was avoiding it. (lol) Thanks

Always good to hear another midi guitarist. I nearly bought the Godin concert, but it had a note that resonated too much compared to the rest of the notes (B on the D string). It was so annoying as it was a pain to eq and record/perform with. I had an godin ACS for years. I had to sell it when I stopped using Roland stuff and started using traditional nylon guitars. I really miss my ACS godin, but always prefered the more hollow Multiacs. Love your sounds. When I grow up I want session horns and Vocalise!

Recently I have wanted to get back into the guitar and now as a music producer am considering buying a midi guitar. Should I buy a guitar especially designed for sending midi or is there some sort of midi add on I could attach to one of my old electric guitars? Specifically, is there an add on for guitars that aren't midi capable which track as well as guitars with native midi?

Excellent video, Andrew, I have had a GR 55 sitting under my desk for about 3 years while I struggled with a keyboard. I will in future leave the keyboard to the key players and I will go back to my guitar, can you run through the hardware setup to get those results?

I run the Godin via a 13din cable into the GR55. Midi out the back into my audio interface (RME Fireface 802), in to my DAW (Cubase Pro9). In the DAW I use Kontakt 5 and UVI Workstations to run the VST instruments. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I have a slightly different setup, Fender Roland Ready Strat with 13 din to GR55, midi out of GR55 to midi in on Komplete 6 audio interface, using Kontakt 5 in Cubase 9.5 (recently swapped from Sonar Platinum as Gibson are no longer supporting that program). Loading a module in Kontakt 5, say Grand Pianos, With these connections I am not getting any sound trough the DAW? any suggestions

After watching I don't think this guitar is for me. It is rich in electronic capabilities and I find I am really more of an old school acoustically inclined kind of player. Perhaps it is made for those who love to dream...what if? For now I will hone in on my classical and fingerstyle roots focusing more on technique and repertoire. Thanks for the great demo.

I saw this exact guitar at a pawn shop recently, but it look roughly out of shape so I didn’t bother.

if it was cheap enough, might have been worth getting it fixed up? They retail for nearly $2000 new!

At 5:26, or so, when you were playing the accordion patch, it seemed like you still had the guitar part audible for a moment. During that time it seemed like there was substantial latency. Did I perceive that correctly? If so, is the latency related to your DAW processing in general or was it related to the the Godin/Roland/Cubase chain specifically. It would be a bit hard to let the setting inspire ones playing if one can't hear the results real-time for say improvisation. You'd really have to listen to your live guitar sound while recording the MIDI info for accordion playback. Right?
@AndrewKeeping
@AndrewKeeping 6 лет назад
Thanks for your comments Craig. There was no latency to speak of on the accordion patch. What you are hearing of the guitar on its own are the guitar bass notes playing outside of the range of the accordion. It is player error not latency. The fingers/chords on the first three strings sound with the accordion chords exactly in time.Good observation though!

Thanks for the excellent demonstration. Quick question, if I just want to use the Multiac as a MIDI controller through a DAW to trigger Native Instruments Komplete Ultimate libraries (and bypassing a Roland GR or Axon), what's the best way to handle this? I'm using a Presonus Audio interface. Thanks!
@AndrewKeeping
@AndrewKeeping 6 лет назад
This is not possible I'm afraid, as the 13pin din cable that comes from the guitar has to be converted into midi via the Roland synth. The 13 pin din is not an independant midi cable. Sorry.

You have to demonstrate that you can have differents sounds on each string !

I notice you were using vibrato on your guitar while playing a nice flugelhorn sound, is that recognized by your midi setup or just programmed into the Roland sound module?
@AndrewKeeping
@AndrewKeeping 6 лет назад
I think that was more instinct. However, it does seem to follow the vibrato movement. i play trumpet and try to phrase like i would with the the vibrato and breathing. This particular Kontakt library seems to flow with it.

there are some disturbing glitches when you play the piano. When I can see what your fingers are doing, such as 8:13 it looks like lifting your fingers to a different chord shape triggers a note that shouldn't be there. Is that the ringing of the open fret? Can that be prevented by lots of damping or increasing the sensitivity of the tracking?
@AndrewKeeping
@AndrewKeeping 5 лет назад
Hi Victor. You do indeed need to adapt your playing depending on the VST instrument. I have done some additional videos following this one, that show a better tracking after adapting the sensitivity settings on the Roland GR55.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SFVIsUIArbg.html

Good demo. No, awesome potential.. Is latency an issue. i.e. string strike - to - sound output ramp from the sampler?.
@AndrewKeeping
@AndrewKeeping 6 лет назад
I really don't have a problem with latency, but then again I have an excellent RME fireface 802 and RME Babyface Pro audio interface.

Really nice explanation of the usage with the synth out. I have the ACS-SA Slim and I absolutely love it. I can't wait until I can get a synth for it. Question - are you able to go out from the GR 55 and into your computer rig to access the instrument plugins? Or are those patches in the synth itself?

Amazing.I wanted to ask a question. I have a godin acs sa and a roland gr 55. I can only hear the sound of the sinth, but not the guitar. Do I have to set something in the settings? Thank you
@AndrewKeeping
@AndrewKeeping 6 лет назад
Thanks so much Nicola. Have you tried using the sliders on the guitar. The top one feeds the sound of the guitar and the bottom one feeds the synth. you can blend the two. You can also mix by taking an extra 1/4 inch jack from the guitar into the GR55 or straight to amp. Good luck.

Summary of why I don't spend any money on this for the moment. (1) Delay. I always do a test with high tempo's, tremolo. Result: chaos, the thing cannot track and follow, always lagging behind. Bad phrasing. Especially in jazz where the rhythmic complexity demands extreme accuracy. Please don't hesitate to make a video that proves I'm wrong and show how to do it. (2) Dropped notes. Unwanted notes. Errors. Due to the complexity of the guitar sound, there exists actually no AI algorithm that can decompose that wave. The problem is similar to voice/speech recognition. You can use it for studio work and edit the result, but it is unusable on stage. (3) Pressing two notes on the same string simultaneously should produce an interval. In the meantime, there are cheaper, less time consuming and better ways to produce a midi file.

i've had one of these for nearly a decade, everything you mentioned is either not a real issue, circumvented by synth settings or programs, or just playing the guitar properly. point 3 is dumb. Its a guitar. Thats the same thing as saying that putting 2 fingers on one piano key should produce 2 sounds. Thats not how it works.

Alright mate, I'm sold 😄 Quick question. What's your take on plugging the Godin on a midi standalone pedal vs plugging it into the PC? I'm thinking barrier of entry in the midi world, quality of the sounds, cost, etc. Thanks for the series, cheers!

You need a roland GR synth in order to translate what the guitar outs out into midi.

That was a very cool demo. I liked the versatility of each instrument as it was played through the guitar. Another top notch item that I will have to wait years to find used or at a pawn shop, and by then it will probably be out of warranty and needing upgrades or repairs. Too bad. Technology advancements have a way of becoming obsolete so quickly but never become affordable soon enough. E
