Thanks Wes for the comparison. I now have the V1, AD200Pro and TT685. Really like the V1 LCD menu screen and buttons to allow for remote triggering of my other Godox flashes. It's so convenient to have the V1 flash on my Canon 90D hotshoe as a remote transmitter that I don't need to use the Godox X2T transmitter anymore. Great video as usual.

love the intro again - reminds me of christmas :) I think you're right in your recs too: tt685 is great value if you don't mind AA's - I think v860ii are still the best overall option as v1s is a little bit much for the round head feature - especially as you have a different interface to v860ii so it's more confusing if you're running both. I know it's not really the same thing but the v850ii is also an option if you're manual flash/off camera only and is cheaper again than v860ii but more than tt685 (at least in UK). Looking forward to your next flash review!

Wes, Thank you for giving importance to a version or two old flash. Something most of the RU-vid channels don’t do it these days. Veracity in a review is only implied when a device is used for more than six months in today’s time. Love the content of your channel. Thank you very much.

Thanks! And don’t tell my flash it’s that old. It still thinks it’s new! ;) And yeah, I have trouble with the required fast turnaround of a lot of review cycles. I greatly prefer long-term reviews, and get stressed about the short turnaround ones, because I still feel obligated to Fully test out everything about the product and try to break it just a little. Well, I prefer the lithium ion ones, so the comparable flash would be the V850ii, but that flash has a much worse user interface, with a simplified screen. Same thing with the 600 vs 685. The 600 has a very rudimentary screen.

Wes, thank you. My biggest issue with the V860II after having a TT685 and also a V1 that was bought when they were only $159, is that its Li-Ion battery and the V1 are different and can not be shared. That means different battery, different charger, etc. I originally bought the TT685 because it used standard AA batteries and I could use a CP-4 Canon (there are others) external battery pack with it. Could also use the larger batter packs I got with the AD360II-C if I really worried about long battery life. Not sure if the 860II can use external battery pack. I know the V1 can not so having a spare battery is important. So even though there is no great deals now on the V1 (Mine is Sony and also need a Canon one) I will end up just buying that so I don't need to buy yet another spare battery. How about one battery to rule them all?
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 4 года назад
I was excited to hear the V1 would have a new battery, assuming that’s meant an upgraded power system. But unfortunately there’s pretty much no difference in output or recycle times, so I’m not sure what the point was. Apparently the cells in the V1 are more standard than the ones in the V860ii, but I’m not exactly sure how that will benefit the end user. Add to that that the V1 battery is a part of its exterior, making it highly unlikely the same battery will be used in anything else, as they’d have to exactly match the form factor, where the V860ii battery could theoretically be put in lots of different things.
@stevenwaldstein2249
@stevenwaldstein2249 4 года назад
@@WesPerry Sounds like a no-win situation. So who knows what comes out after V1 and what its battery looks like. May have to go back to the TT685 since its compatible with OEM flashes as well which I think are all still AA based. Maybe that is why the OEM have always based their speedlites on a standard readily available commercial cell.

... a solid flash, that's true Wes! But I prefer the V1 as part of my Godox system (two AD200pro for on location shootings). My best on camera flash is the Sony HVL-F60RM. And the new firmware for the a7 III, a7R III or a7R IV makes it easy to handle ... and thx for the video! 👍🏻
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 4 года назад
Thanks, TW And for Sony flashes, unfortunately their hardware and firmware improvements came as too little, too late for many, if not most, Sony users. The first generation of their mirrorless flashes were So Bad that many of us still have a bad taste in our mouths (it would literally overheat and shut down for several minutes if you fired it more than 5 times in a row, and pulling the batteries did nothing. Just INCREDIBLE). I’m a little disappointed, though, that Godox hasn’t come out with a “master flash”. One flash to rule them all, that solidly competes with the likes of the first party flashes and the A1x. I don’t feel like it would be that hard for them to do it - they certainly have the technology to make slightly larger, more powerful, much faster flash. And there’s definitely an audience for it. Maybe they’re just afraid the hot shoe will snap off 😂
@TW-iu9zy
@TW-iu9zy 4 года назад
Wes Perry ... yes, thank god the problems with the old flash units are no longer an issue with the new ones. BTW: If I will turning my V1 the mechanism is extremely stiff. 😬 ... my old a9 has had that rattle-issue when an optional large flash unit is attached and high pressure is applied to it - after the Sony ProSupport fixed it, I could use the V1.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 4 года назад
I haven’t had any issue with my a9 hot shoe (yet?). I don’t find the head of my V1 to be any stiffer than those on my V860’s...at least when they were new. One of them is getting a bit loose now from use (not too loose, just looser).

Im looking to get my first flash which will probably be most often used on camera (D500+battery grip) while learning how to use it. I want a general well rounded flash that could also work well for my preferred genre of photography which is macro. With everything attached ill like be looking at about 7 pounds in my hands if not using a tripod. Im torn between the v350 and v860iii (i know the video isnt for this one but it came up when i was on google). Despite being more weight, would adding more weight on top of the camera make it easier to weild since with a lense and teleconverter make my camera very front heavy? Do you think the v860iii is worth it over the v350 for a casual hobbyist? Also, what are your thoughts on buying used flashes? Ive had good luck with buying my camera used in addition to the lenses but i had to dig for awhile and message sellers that i felt that i could trust.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry Год назад
I generally wouldn’t think that a larger flash would be hugely worthwhile for macro work. Typically you wouldn’t be doing rapid fire stuff, but it all depends on how you get the job done. And being someone who prefers a more minimalist setup, I’d much sooner go for something lighter if I had the option 😂
@JustFluxz

@@WesPerry id like to be relatively minimalist but a d500, battery grip, 105mm, and a 2x teleconverter is definitely far from that. In what situations may i prefer the v860iii over the v350? I wanted also get a sufficient flash just in case I was too ever do any kind of portrait work.

Hey Wes. I use this flash for off camera flash. I find it takes longer than 1.5 seconds to recharge and fire again when in ttl. I have not tried manual mind you. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 3 года назад
First, TTL uses more power than manual mode. Sometimes a lot more. Second, if your shutter speed is above sync speed (1/160 to 1/250 depending on the camera), the flash will have to go into HSS, which uses 2-3x as much power. Combining the two can be a recipe for disaster. Haha

Hi Wes! I have a new gig (socially distanced) this weekend. Can you recommend a small lightweight on camera flash for Sony? Will need it mostly for a low light nightclub setting to take group photos (2-8 ppl) and dance floor pictures with a 20-24mm focal range. Overall new to flash and will be using TTL for simplicity due to varying low light conditions. Do you think the Godox V350 fits this bill? Or can I even get away with something smaller like the super basic Sony F20M or Meike MK320? Appreciate any feedback.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 3 года назад
If you’re shooting the flash straight at your subjects, the V350 would likely be just fine for this (you’ll have your iso pushed pretty hard to be able to still see the background). If you’re bouncing, you’re most likely out of luck, as nightclub ceilings are often black...which makes that not work so well 😏
@dwmspace
@dwmspace 3 года назад
Wes Perry thanks a lot for the feedback! Yeah I already know I won’t be able to bounce the flash unfortunately due to the black ceiling :( worried though about shooting directly at the subjects and blinding them and getting harsh images lol hoping a diffuser add on will help with that or to use a bounce card. Was still contemplating the MK320 as it has a video light which can help in some instances. Wish the V350 had it as well but I guess I’ll still go for it. Thanks a lot for your feedback! Also hope I’ll be able to max the ISO to 6400 and still get some background ambience.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 3 года назад
Some people doing club photography will use a slow shutter speed, (anywhere from 1/10 to 1/60s) to gather a lot more light. The front facing flash will freeze the action of what you’re shooting directly, while giving a fun/crazy blurring to the background action. Something fun to try, but be careful of course. Haha
@dwmspace
@dwmspace 3 года назад
Wes Perry lol thanks! Yeah saw some videos on it and been looking forward to giving it a go haha pretty amazing how flash can freeze action with such low shutter speeds. If I can ask one last question, will TTL be my best bet as a beginner for nightclub style photography and would you stick with Auto White Balance if the lighting is unpredictable?
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 3 года назад
If you’re firing flash straight at them, you can use flash white balance. Or just do auto. If you’re shooting raw there really not much reason not to go auto. TTL can be unpredictable, especially on third party flashes. I didn’t use it for very long while starting out, because it’ll also overheat your flash faster.

One follow up question that I can not seem to find in the V860II manual. Does this flash have a way to attach an external battery like the P960 that Godox makes? A feature sheet says it does support external battery but can't find it in the manual pdf I seem to find.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 4 года назад
That's an excellent question. I've heard many people say it doesn't, manual doesn't mention it, but I've also found people who say it does. One reason people give for it not working is that it doesn't have an external power port ... but it DOES! Maybe it's there but disabled, because it shares so many components with the TT685? Still looking for solid proof on that one. I'd really like to know as well.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 4 года назад
Okay, I solved it. The extra port is an older version of Godox's "wireless control port", not a high voltage input port, which is a separate port near the bottom of the TT685. So that means there is indeed no way to hook it up to external power. That wireless control port in later models was changed to a standard USB port (as seen on the AD200), which fits the external wireless controller XTR16.
@stevenwaldstein2249
@stevenwaldstein2249 4 года назад
@@WesPerry Thanks for working it out. So if you want capability like that the TT685 is your only option. I'm sure the larger Li-ion batteries negate that need but then I would want a set of flashes that use the same Li-ion battery type. So that is not the V1 and the V860II. Something to consider when selecting which one you want to go with. Something I never thought about until I got involved with the speed lights from them. Prior to now I only used Godox speed lights for Sony. I used Canon's OEMs up until recently but switching those over to Godox.

Hi dear your tutorial is fantastic 😍 but how to use HSS in slave mode by using the godox X1T triger
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 3 года назад
Well, it’s not Slave mode specifically, as that’s usually referring to optical slave, which doesn’t do HSS. You have to be in radio receiver mode for HSS with the X1T

That’s a tough one. The repair costs 50% the value of the flash itself where I am. I ordered a replacement screen but the one that came was used and broken, too 🙄 Thankfully they refunded it. Annoying predicament.

Unfortunately the Sony hot shoe isn’t entirely compatible with focus assist beams. It only activated the pin using AF-S single shot I believe. Which isn’t terrible useful. The only Godox product I’ve managed to get it to work with is the X1T-S. Additionally, the mirrorless focus system can’t even see infrared, so only visible focus assists will work with it.

I was gonna sell mine because I got the dreaded swollen battery problem. But then I remember I bought 5 years ago and everything has been great APART from this issue. A new battery is expensive ( here in the UK its $55 dollars) I figure the money saved on AA and the avoided hassle of THAT power world, it's not so awful.

Base assy is plastic junk, and the on off switches are cheap junk, and often fail as well. Most common failure is the Godox shoe base. The one Ebay store guy said he sold over 900 in one month recently. Sony flashes with metal base cost 2 to 3x as much as Godox. I have bought 2 Godox flashes.. 860, and 685S. Both have had the bases replaced 2x, and recently the 685 base broke yet again. We don't just shoot with these at 90 deg, we shoot off the wall, rear flash, etc. Any physical anything starts to crack that base assy. Really wish Godox would make a steel plate for Sony like the do Canon, Nikon

Godox V860II for outdoors is not good for professionals because when you use it in High Speed Sync and you shoot higher than 1/500 s, you don't get enough light unless you get the flash very, very close to the subject. The manufacturer states that you can shoot High Speed Sync 1/8000 s, but that is a joke, your photo will come out totally black

I wanted to love this flash but now I have to give it a bit of a thumbs down. I think for many the battery going in and coming out won't be a problem, on mine the battery goes in just fine but I have to really struggle to get it out. There is this white button you push and the battery is suppose to pop out, not on mine. The other day it took me ten minutes to get the battery (lithium) out, the little white button wasn't doing its thing. Right now if I could purchase an adapter to use AA batteries, I would.
@WesPerry
@WesPerry 2 года назад
When that happens it’s usually because the battery is swollen and needs replacing. Which really sucks. The new V860iii uses the newer, supposedly higher quality battery from the V1. I haven’t had Any Godox batteries fail on me as of yet, so I can’t speak to whether or not that’s actually the case. (I have 4x V860ii, 1 V1, 1 V860iii, 1 V850iii, so a lot of those batteries kicking around!)

@@WesPerry I have toyed with taking a very fine sandpaper to the sides of the battery, hoping that loosens the compartment/battery problem. But I appreciate your comment. I had cancer that affected me, along with the chemo, and I couldn't handle anything photography for a prolonged period of time and I had just bought the 6880 ii before the whole medical circus began. It was in a closet in my bedroom which is airconditioned but last summer we experienced a "heat bomb" and I'm wondering if that affected it.
