Should’ve been nominated for best film. I think that it had Godzilla in it probably factored in the committees decision. As a Godzilla fan I think this is the best one ever.
Seen it 3 times. First time in a regular theater, 2nd time in imax, 3rd time today but was the minus color version and honestly the black and white version just fits perfectly with the tone and atmosphere of the movie
"Perfect Days" was Japan's submission for International Film, and it did get nominated so there's that. Three Japanese films got nominated in three separate categories in 2024.
After checking about this. There were two factors that I came across that what cause this movie missing out on getting Best Foreign. Factor one apparently each country is only allow to pick only one movie for the movie to get nominated. And the other factor was that the dead line was in October to pick the movie. Since Minus One came out in November it arrived to late for Japan to had picked it.
The first Japanese Gojira film (not the bizarre American dub) from 1954 is a great horror film set during WWII. It’s a serious drama also and is highly recommended. I also highly recommend the Heisei films. There’s been plenty of great Godzilla films over the franchise’s 70 year history. Most of them have great social commentary. You just gotta look into them beyond surface level.
Just saw this with my daughter yesterday. Never thought I would root against Godzilla, but I was hoping they would kill him pretty early on in this one. Great movie!
