One line from the Japanese cut of the movie that really got my attention is the part where they strait up said that Godzilla is super sensitive to bright lights because they remind him of the atomic bomb Yeah apparently Showa era Godzilla canonically has PTSD
On 3:27 Fun fact: the footage of the ceratosaurus in the American version of Godzilla raids again are from a film called “Unknown island” and that film was released in 1948
fun fact the film was originaly in, I think 2 strip cinecolor,* but they made it black and white to fit the movie. *that's why the original movie looks like it's colorized
Funny thing about your comment on Kobayashi sounding like a Hanna-Barberra character. I've read that he was dubbed by the same guy that did the voice for Yogi Bear.
Godzilla Raids Again was almost turned into a different movie called the Volcano Monsters. A US Production Company was going to take Special Effects footage from the second Godzilla film, and build an entirely new story around it. It was going to be about exploroers who discover the Preserved Bodies of Two Dinosaurs(Godzilla & Anguirus). They transport them back to Civilization, and somehow, the two Creatures come back to life. They escape and have a battle in a nearby Chinatown(which would've explained the Asian setting in the film). Toho even shipped over two Godzilla and Anguirus Costumes that were going to be used to film additional shots for the movie. Eventually the Project got shelved and we got a dubbed version of Godzilla Raids Again, instead. As bad as the American version of Godzilla Raids Again is(or Gigantis the Fire Monster, as It's also called), the re-edited, butchered version might've even been worse.
I remember seeing Gigantis at a theatre back in the early sixties. It was on a double bill with Teenagers From Outer Space. So far as I know, it was never shown on TV nor released on VHS or DVD. I was finally able to get the original, Godzilla Raids Again, on DVD sometime in the twenty-teens. The version I bought did not include the American edition, so all that remains to me of Gigantis is a handful of sixty-year-old memories. In the meantime, I did find a DVD of Teenagers from Outer Space, so that hot sixties summer afternoon is not lost to me entirely.
Do you do your channel needs way more love than what my old channel does my old channel is just Evan Cunningham you are actually going into depth with some of these in some of the stuff I’ve never heard about you deserve more than 1 million
Paper Finz Also thank you for The reply I’m one of your biggest fans and I’ve been subscribed to you ever since your first video that being Godzilla I really love how you compare the differences it never made me think about which one was American now I know that the media DVDs are only the American cuts except for the gojira
The title card Godzlla Raids Again actually wasn't used in the American cut until the 2006 DVD, although the 1988 VHS release was titled Godzilla Raids Again, the title card on the actual movie still read Gigantis, the Fire Monster.
Apparently if you listen to the voices in the English dub closely you can also find future Star Trek actor George Takei doing some of the dubbing on the soldiers I think later on in the film. Oh my.
The first time I saw the 1959 version of Godzilla Raids Again it was when I purchased it on home video which I still have, I didn't know it really existed, I enjoy watching it.
Great video. When I was a little kid these movies were long out of theaters, but it was before the age of VHS. This was one of the very few Showa Godzilla films I never saw broadcast on local TV. Never knew it existed until I picked up the VHS release in the 1980s. It is a strange film in the series; much stranger in the American dub, but I find both versions have an unusual tone and somewhat odd-looking monster sequences. It is interesting, for sure, but I would not consider either version a strong Godzilla entry. More of a curiosity.
While I find the Japanese version dull the American dub is absolutely abysmal and pretty much unwatchable. The only good thing about it is I actually like the music and footage they used for the opening titles better in the American version.
Even though the opening music is from a different film. it's the score i think of when i think of the movie. more then the Satoh theme. its the one piece of music i do actually like in the dub.
The thing you mention about the title cards is a bit strange, as when I first watched this on Netflix YEARS back, the cover was labeled as Raids Again, but the title card was the Gigantis one.
3:19 Fun fact: in the USA version, stock music used during the conference scene would pop up again in Al Adamson’s infamous “Dracula vs. Frankenstein” (1971).
I know Godzilla probably wasn’t a household name at that point in time, since this was only the second movie, but it’s still hard to believe that they expected people to look at “Gigantis” and not recognize it as Godzilla.
This movie was even release before he was called Godzilla it was gojira a combination of gorilla and Japanese word for whales aka kujira to form kujira. Till like 1955 in Hawaii the name Godzilla happen
The good thing about the Toho master collection Godzilla dvds is you can watch both American and Japanese Dvds but I don’t really like the American cuts
Keye Luke Narration: "The Happy People fished and fished and fished and all were happy for being so happy, and all was happiness. Maybe - we were a little TOO Happy. Later, our drinking water was analyzed and the wells cleansed."
For some reason this was one of my favourite Godzilla movies as a kid (keep in mind I did not grow up watching Godzilla as VHS dubs, I was able to, well, get them off the internet in their original forms). Maybe it was the main theme, or the fact that Anguirus is a Very Cool™ monster, or the suit for whatever reason(???). Not really sure why, looking back it's actually rather crap. The suit is indeed very creepy as Gojiwars says. Doesn't help that we know very little about the suit itself in terms of promo pictures (plenty of high quality promo pictures for ShodaiGoji & KingGoji, not many for GyakushuGoji. I don't think it helps that the incredible sense of scale seen in Gojira is pretty much gone from this film, and that the suit itself is barely seen in close-up, where we get instead that godawful mechanical handpuppet from the first movie. I'm probably coming off as a bit blunt to fans of the film, sorry about that lol. There's a decent picture of Godzilla in the iceberg island thing, and he's just standing there, looking rather creepy with his skinny arms and misshapen head. What I'm trying to say is that the film is unfortunately inbetween Gojira and KKvG, and so not much fan attention is drawn to finding knowledge about behind the scenes/translating any books about GRA, that is if there even are any to be found. Sorry for the mini essay lol, and if the channel owner is reading this and wondering why I've been leaving several long comments in previous videos it's not because I'm trying to get your attention, honest :p
RU-vid's algorithm has failed for not showing me your content sooner XD PS I doubt it was changed to not be a sequel for the reason that American movies didn't do sequels much at the time. Hollywood was famously already sequel crazy, a good example are the Universal monster movies featuring Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolfman, even the Creature from the Black Lagoon had 2 sequels. Curious that they changed it at all really.
I had no idea the dub is a whole different version. I watched it today and wondered why Godzillas roar only sounded right at some points. I also wondered why they was calling him Gigantis seems as they already killed Godzilla with the oxygen destroyer, yet they mention the oxygen destroyer but this version is not a sequel LOL I enjoyed it none the less
I know a large part of this is that I grew up with the dubbed version, but I genuinely like it better than the Japanese version. I like the voiceovers! The only thing I don't like (and even didn't as a kid watching this in the movies (in the early 1980s-our small Canadian town showed old sci-fi movies on weekends)) is the wrong roar for Godzilla!
Wait a minute on the media DVDs does that mean that the only version is the American although it is titled Godzilla rates again because I have the criterion collection and I watch the Japanese version but I go to the Media DVDs and it’s still the American is there a way to change it
I would totally check mine but I have a toddler so it must stay locked away. But I believe that's the one you can flip the disc right over upside down and the Japanese version should play, both sides should be "cd shiny" and not one with a printed title side.
I can never forgive them doing everything in their power to turn a Godzilla movie into a Non-Godzilla movie with dubbing. Let the thing be a Godzilla movie.
I really wish Toho would just redub their movies themselves, it’s pretty obvious the yanks can’t really do it without making some pointless changes and narration especially in the earlier ones.
They did actually make an international dub to King Kong vs. Godzilla but I think it has been lost to the sands of time from what I read. So they started doing it about in 1962 I guess in the 50s they didn't think about doing that.
While I also recommend the Japanese version only, the USA version has two of my favorite lines, both spoken by Dr. Tadokoro (Masao Shimizu): “This is BAD! This IS bad!” “A new book come out and we learned so much. And it is called: ‘Angerasaurus - Killer of the Living.’” I guess as opposed to “Killer of the Dead.”
i didn't like the movie because it feels rushed and is so so so boring the characters are boring and also i hate how when kubayashy sacrifices him self to bary Godzilla in ice but the movie cuts a way leaving the good momentum and the shot alooooot to just bary Godzilla and for the dub well it didn't change anything really but i hate how they put anguirus roar at godzilla it is so out of place
The American versions of most of the early Godzilla movies I find to be still pretty enjoyable, but this one is the exception. The American version of this movie is so bad, it's almost offensive.
I prefer the japanese version of Godzilla counterattack/Godzilla raids again but I’m not impressed on the American version of the film because the title card is super cringe
@King Kong Fan GGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAHHHHHH I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVEEE GIGANTIS THE FIRE MONSTER Edit: i Have Now Lost Interest on Gigantis The Fire Monster
The thing that really bugs me in the American cut was the constant narration and the terrible dubbing along with them constantly referring to Godzilla as Gigantis.
I didnt really like the Japanese cut but at least it was ok. The US cut is just so unwatchable, boring and just abysmal. The cuts are dumb and the human characters have less emotion in the US than the Japanese version. And dear god why did they give godzilla anguirus's roar. That makes zero sense. The title of the US version is stupid. They made godzilla and anguirus just more of a generic monster than in the Japanese version. The US version is just a disgrace. How did they let it release!? It's so boring and bland. There is so many unnecessary narration. If your doing a movie your ment to show not show and tell. That makes no fucking sense
