The new Godzilla Anime trilogy has just wrapped up on Netflix with the release of Godzilla The Planet Eater. There’s a lot to unpack from the third and final movie and throughout this article I will be breaking down everything that you need to know about Godzilla: The Planet Eater.
There will of course be heavy spoilers here, so if you don’t want to know anything in regards to the trilogies ending, then I highly suggest that you turn off now.
For everyone else, I’m Deffinition and welcome to the channel where I ruin it so you don’t have to.
Godzilla: The Planet Eater: Ending Explained
Unlike most films featuring the Leviathan Godzilla, The Planet Eater isn’t so straightforward. We pick up with our heroes attempting to integrate with the Houtua culture after the defeat of Ghidorah. They eventually adopt the tribal dress that the group wear and have discard their weapons allowing for them almost seem happy despite their failure to kill Godzilla.
Of course, this simple life isn’t exactly, especially when Martin Lazzari discovers that the nanotech in Yuko’s brain-dead body could hold the key to reactivating the Mecha suit piloted in the fight over Mechagodzilla City.
This worries Haruo however, who is now pretty much in charge of the human survivors, as he realises that with access to this technology, humanity would likely once again come close to destroying itself. He realises that humans will be cursed to repeat the past and with the advanced technology, ultimately create their own destruction.
This forces him to destroy all of the remaining Mechagodzilla technology and hope that humanity will adopt the Houtua culture as this is the only way to keep the peace.
Godzilla: The Planet Eater Ending
Using the Mechagodzilla suit he takes Godzilla on face to face in the hopes that the giant monster will destroy all traces of the technology. This is where the film takes a rather internal and psychological turn that may catch some viewers off guard. Instead of ejecting, Haruo doesn’t because he fears that the hatred that he carries could be a weapon that too ends up destroying humanity.
The Houtua don’t really carry hate in their heart, they carry the philosophy that Living Is Winning and that Dying is losing. They just accept things the way that they are and understand that Godzilla is as much a force of nature as the tides and wind. Haruo fears that the hate that he feels inside for Godzilla directly contradicts his teachings and therefore he is a danger to his own people just as much as Godzilla is.
Juxtaposing their beliefs, Haruo realises that Dying is actually winning and that by letting Godzilla destroy the technology he is enabling Godzilla, The Destroyer Of Human Civilisation, to actually be the one that saves it. It’s a breathtaking, introspective turn that really shows just how cerebral and well thought out the film is and is something I absolutely loved.
Godzilla: The Planet Eater Post Credits Scene Explained
In the post-credits scene for the film we see that due to the actions of Haruo, the Houtua are still alive and that humans have joined their tribe. However, they have a new ritual. We see an Effigy of the Mecha suit in which Haruo died with children throwing knots into the burning fire that surrounds the reminder. This represents that they may be free of fear for the coming year which also ties into what Haruo did. Through the fire of Godzilla, he was able to take the fears of the future and burn them, allowing freedom to continue.

This was deep but I understand it completely. This psychological approach to Godzilla has never been done before so I find this fascinating. Also this is the first one where Humanity doesn't really win or get to rebuild. Godzilla technically wins. The Hotua see living as winning which humanity does but in the end, Godzilla won out over them. In a way they both won but still. What a fantastic movie.

Wrote this whole thing, didnt see u made a place for it lol. But I must respectfully inform you that you're completely, objectively wrong. Its not even a matter of opinion or interperetation, the films are very clear. The after credits scene wasnt positive, I have no clue how anyone got that idea. Listen to the music...its foreboding, not uplifting. Its "scary". They're literally praying to a god to destroy the things they fear. Theyre repeating the exact same mistakes again, both the physical practices and ideology leading to ghidorah (the space monks already told us how they got to where they are at least twice)...not to mention their god, mothra, is yet another literal monster. They already explained how monsters are how you get ants. I mean ghidorahs. Then you have the fact that they have these fears to deal with in the first place. Burning a stick does nothing special in this universe, so all those emotions are still there. The fuel for hate is blatently on full display here. And if we wanna get speculatory, they show one of the twins right after, probably the one that was literally attacked, held prisoner, and left strapped in front of ghidorah and had all the motivation on the world to figure out what hate is. Clearly the intention is to drive home the inevitability of the end...and you can be intellectually lazy and take it as everything is meaningless, or you can interperet the message that the journey is the part that matters and focusing too hard on the end gets you where the alien monks were. Its almost as if trying to represent a beautiful side of nihilism. But yea, Haruo's sacrifice was in vain in that it prevented nothing...but it was meaningful in that it extended humanity's journey, the part that matters and the part the space monks were so quick to try to end. That is and has been the message of the entire trilogy, made most clear in the realization that if winning is living then we all inevitably have lose, and noone ever has won. It was a fitting and compassionate end to the ultimately fleeting existence of a single, nobel boy-man.

When they show the time frame of the grass and plants growing over the weapons. You can tell it has been months, At least MONTHS, Like 4 minume. Now, haruo was "Happy" And not into the hatred of Godzilla, however, it never left him, neither did the fear of gihdora and the end of humanity once again, but it was a dwarf in his mind. He WAS happy. It shows that, at least that was what I got. Until the doctor told him how the nano mech can "rebuild" humanity back into it's greatest form. Haruo had PTSD. He had his floods of fear and anger, his mind was that of a Vietnam veteran. It was too much for him, or it was too much not to take action. He was in mental and emotional pain. He lost the mental battle and gave in. He though what makes him human is to accept loses, which he though was a win for him. He denies humanity a chance to countie the cycle, to allow gidorha another opportunity to lay waste. So what happened was PTSD, his sudden massive fear and anger of the past, he lost himself the moment the doctor told him. So I now understand why he did it... it's shitty and I'm annoyed and so is many others... but I have to ask, really, would we not do the same? What we went through as haruo, the sudden realization, would we not crumble and surcome to our fear and end it all with ourselves?

I didn’t like the ending in all honesty. Haruo just seemed like he's been brainwashed. Metphies turned him into a defeatist that had no faith in the future, with the only outcome in his mind being that “technology = inevitable doom". Under the assumption that humanity could never be better than their ancestors, the Exif or the Bilusaludo , he takes it upon himself to destroy the remaining technology and leave the remaining humans in the stone age for the foreseeable future, regardless of what their own personal thoughts and beliefs might be. This just proves to me that his belief in his people and the future are dead. To top things off he takes the cowards way out by killing himself so he doesn’t have to face up to the choice he made or be a part of guiding the future down a better path, and of course after he gets one of the twins pregnant. At the end of the day it still seems like Metphies talked Haruo into killing himself, it just happened later than expected.

SaphG1 That's what pissed me off so much. Not only he made a decision for the remaining survivors, stranding them in shit infested stone age, but he also completely missed the idea that if we made a weapon that can level a city, eventually, we can make one that can level planets, let alone solar systems - we can surpass this limitation and create weapons that kill whatever might call itself a "god". He just turned so pathetic at the end, condemning all of humanity.

I found it funny that the whole point of the final climatic scene of him piloting the craft and dying to Godzilla was sort overshadowed and made moot by the single fact, that other colony ships made it off earth and on-top of that other sentient alien races out there are making world ending monsters as implied by the long winded diatribe the movie meandered with. So I mean was it REALLY that impactful that the MC chose to kill himself? I mean, its only a matter of time before another race of alien vagrants show up and start trouble, or hell if one of the other human colonies is successful, its clear that they ain't gonna take Godzilla's win sitting down. I mean its just silly to think that, they chose to have the MC "protect the future by destroying tech and trying not to spread hate by muh suicide" When I dunno.... Maybe the MC could just goddamn accept that sometimes shit is outside of your control, granted blowing up the nano-metal mech is a wise move, but hell man... It would have sounded way better if he just learned to forgive Godzilla, I mean the whole goddamn movie series just parallels them the whole time. If the MC just realized that he and godzilla were both subject to things far outside of their control, and the only thing he had control of was his own life. I dunno he could have just settled down with his family and accepted Godzilla was a fact of life now and nothing was gonna change that.... Well at least until Alien War 2 Electric Boogalo started eventually...
@RBZ-1
@RBZ-1 5 лет назад
I totally agree. I think a better message would have been to let the hatred go instead of killing yourself and leaving your kid a bastard, which I couldn't understand since he kinda found out that Godzilla wasn't technically responsible for all the lives lost that he cared about...it was his own handler of all people and humans themselves. It was wayyyy too drawn out and talky and the characters were suspense/thriller movie stupid.
@kage432
@kage432 5 лет назад
Hmmm. I think the main point you missed was that the cult leader was right, the mc did want to die. Its very common amongst surviving soldiers to feel as if their existence, being the ones that survived when everyone else didn't, isn't justified and they seek an end to an empty life plagued by memories of bloodshed, loss and hatered for the enemy(talking movies here). On top of the mc realizing that leaving the nanometal in the hands of the other colonists would swiftly hasten the return of the golden demise he also simply wanted an end to what must have been a very painful existence wrought with suffering and unresolved grievances, something typical of many characters suffering PTSD both on screen and in reality. But yeah, his inner battle against the cult leader was a bit drawn out. It would have benefited greatly from using more suitable/moving music for those scenes rather than what we got and perhaps cutting it down in length. Apart from that though the movie was largely interesting. Far from perfect though it is I can say I enjoyed this more philosophical take on the Kaiju king. I think it took the themes fans are familar with surrounding the mythos and expanded upon them in ways we haven't seen before with stakes and threats that were more than relatable. The threat of humanity's arrogance in the pursuit of power. The threat of religious zealots blinded by their faith converting the weak willed in their time of weakness and desperation. The inner resolve to face annihilation, even if its hopeless, even if you can only delay it for a moment, it speaks volumes for the human spirit and how far we'd go in search of a righteous end to overwhelmingly abysmal conflicts. These themes made for a unique monster film and I enjoyed it despite its shortcomings. Praise the winged demise.
@j3d89

i think the whole point killing himself was to destroy the ship and the nano machines in the body of the girl, in the process ending his agony of not being able to win, once the scientist made said he would bring back *technology*, haruo undestood that more Godzilla or something worse its going to happen the best thing he could do for humanity was to delay the arrival of technology and keep them as cavemen
@ChaseYu
@ChaseYu 5 лет назад
I believe that he did accepted Godzilla is what it is now and it's part of life on earth that better just live and evolve with it as well, like all other things ( he's going in to die with the smile after all). I mean the new people on earth did just that, no technology and they adapted to the new earth as well as somewhat evolving because of Godzilla exist. So he chose to die with the tech instead of waiting (hoping ) that a new alien race to come or something like that are probably not happening, the reason is quite simple, Godzilla might be the punishment in some people's eye ( like that God worshippers Aline guy) because of technology. But Godzilla are also the protector of the new earth now that which you can say that it is living anti Aline and anti technology defense system on earth. So, dying with the *last* technology on the new earth is make sense ( as how the movie presented).
@amingg71
@amingg71 5 лет назад
@@ChaseYu Yes and in the end, the antagonist of this movie wasn't Godzilla, but humanity's greed. It's so sad that humanity can't differentiate between right and wrong when using technology. So, the best way is destroying the last technology and become a Houtua (the new humans on earth) which didn't use technology. I really like the messages that are being told in this trilogy, learning that we humanity was the one who's destroying ourself.

Trilogy took more of a philosophical turn then a hard-on action monster brawl which is a nice touch considering there is still the many many older Godzilla films to revisit. It's hard to balance between character development and the focus on Godzilla considering it is a Godzilla film. People just can't get enough of the beast obviously. In my honest opinion, the ending was incredibly disappointing. I really enjoyed the first and second movies, but this one just fell incredibly flat for me. The MC killing himself in the end was the biggest reason for that, and that's because it made everything that happened up to that point (particularly his development as a character and realizing there is more to living than fighting Godzilla) completely f**king pointless. Like seriously, his entire character arc throughout the films was about realizing what he was fighting for - realizing that there was more to live for than pure vengeance. Then all of a sudden, when that fact literally slaps him across the face with him having a damn child, he just goes and kills himself? WTF, he should know more than anyone else what it's like to grow up without parents, and he just ends up leaving his kid fatherless without a care in the world? Made no damn sense, and it kinda pissed me off.

@@resonaire It would be interesting if that were even true. At the end, it is heavily implied that he killed himself because "muh technology will doom humanity again", hence why he used the mech to do it after the other guy (I already forgot all of their names, dammit) said he figured out how to control the nano-tech. His motivation for killing himself was not consistent with his character no matter how you try to spin it, and it was all because the Japanese writers just had to insert the token "tEcHnOlOgY bAd" idea into their story. I know that is supposed to be a running theme in Godzilla movies, but like wtf, could we not already figure that out with the "Earth is a post-apocalyptic wasteland" and "Humanity is an endangered species" concepts? And it is most certainly not a justification for completely ruining a character's consistency and development. We followed this guy for 3 freaking movies, and you have him kill himself because you have to force a theme down our throats? FFS, that's like shoehorning in colored characters where they wouldn't make sense in a story for the sake of Social Justice diversity *cough* Netflix's The Witcher *cough* every BBC original show ever *cough* It was poor writing, plain and simple.

I disagree... Respectfully to each his own opinion... And believe me im no fan of SJW agenda pushing (im looking at you Last Jedi... fUCK U) but i seriously did forsee the character and the story evolve to an extent and it made all the sense in the world to me. Haruo did realize that hate and un examined tech are dangerous (similar idea to jurassic park for.that matter), he also realized hed been used for his hatred by the exif... And the consequences there of he was now suffering and he chose an alternate path, one that didnt.doom whats left of.humanity. i thought it was a great way to close out a character and not in an obvious way, but with closure nonetheless.... If you find it lazy or stupid writing hey, sure thing. I didn't. I always felt from the very first movie that his whole character arc revolved around his realization that pure hatred could not be the answer and he did, but also realized he couldn't overcome it. Take the bot, take the hate, two birds ya know? And consider this, just because you didn't like the focus of the story being a critique on human civilizations path to self destruction by abuse of tech, and not the big kickass monster fights that we never got (which i wouldve definitely enjoyed if we got some) doesnt mean the subject matter is bad. And it never felt like a bs sjw throatjamming agenda... Not even close. It just wasnt a kaiju film in the sense of it being focal on the cataclysm level fights between monsters. But hey, agree to disagree?
@thehavoccompany-a3
@thehavoccompany-a3 5 лет назад
@@resonaire I wasn't saying that it felt exactly like an SJW agenda, I simply compared it to that because the token "technology is bad" theme is a thing seen in pretty much the majority of Japanese movies, which is similar to how Western movies have been running the token colored/LGBT characters shtick. There just to be there and not serve the plot at all. Basically, it's something that's been done out the a** and is frankly completely unnecessary at this point. It's not just my opinion here; the fact is this freaking plot point has become excessive in the Japanese movie industry and the writers (being Japanese) undoubtedly knew this. There was zero originality or creativity involved in implementing the theme into the movie, and that in and of itself is bad writing. I understand that the reason the Japanese do this a lot is because of the lingering effects/thoughts on the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but ffs we are 70 years and countless anti-technology themed movies later. No excuses. Anyways, yeah, let's agree to disagree.

There are two interpretations of the end credits scene that seem plausible to me, one that I read is that the effigy at the end is the mecha suit Haruo uses, and by putting their fears into the fire, the fear is consumed in the fire, just like how Haruo did. This is what you believe. Me and my dad watched it, and my initial reaction and analysis to that scene was that Metphies lived on in Haruo’s brain, telling him that as long as there is life, Ghidorah is watching. He sacrifices himself and the girl in order to keep civilization from advancing too quickly, but keeps the sisters alive. The sister knows Ghidorah’s name, and using the effigy as a proxy, has the kids give their fears to be consumed, which was the whole thing about Ghidorah, “The World Eater”. This gave me the sense of hopelessness that humanity is always destined to doom, much like how the rest of the movie sorta gave. But that was just my take, what do you think?
@genjigrant795
@genjigrant795 5 лет назад
On top of that, since Metphies and the rest of the Exfil are no more, no one can believe in Ghidorah anymore. To avoid that, he planted the thought into Haruo to keep the sisters alive so that Ghidorah has a new cult following in the human race. Maybe not pray to Ghidorah directly, but more symbolically.
@genjigrant795
@genjigrant795 5 лет назад
Now that I think about it, maybe it’s both, the intent is to pray to Haruo, but he was the hero that would give birth to Ghidorah into their universe and Metphies’ hope. By praying to Haruo, they indirectly pray to Ghidorah? The kids did say “oh wrathful god, oh wrathful god” too when praying, which could mean Haruo and his anger, but I don’t feel that it makes sense to worship him a god, it would make more sense to worship him as a hero. The only one in the movie to be actively called god was Ghidorah. I feel like I’m confusing myself with this ending, but that’s cool, to be able to try and discern the ending. I feel like there has to be more to the end credits scene then “everything is peaceful now”, which I feel would negate the whole series

I think your right about what they wanted the ending to mean. I dont feel it is a very satisfying ending, because it seems kinda contradictory with Haruo's character development. During the series, Haruo's motivation were a mix of hatred (wanting to kill godzilla) and hope (trying to reclaim the planet for humanity). In the climax of this Planet Eaters I thought the whole point of the Metphies conflict was to confront these 2 motivations and ended with Haruo going for hope instead of hatred. This makes the ending kinda meh, since he had other options than killing himself. He could simply have destroyed the jet and burned Yuko's body in my opinion that would have been a more satisfying ending that aligned better with his character development during the series.

The trilogy was hot garbage, but I will say that the theme of was made clear until the last part of the said trilogy which as way better than the rest. The first one being about birthright, second about technology and last about religion. But the major gripe with a lot of Godzilla fans was the laziness of the storytelling. The rushed exposition, the missed opportunities over Mecha G AND Mothra, and the piss poor Kaiju fight in this film. YES, I AM AN OLDER (MIDDLE AGED) Godzilla FAN. And I understand the reason Toho decided to do a an Anime, instead of a sequel to Shin. I found out when a Japanese girl that works at the bar I work at after I mentioned that I watched Shin asked me "Just how old are you." I get it that Toho decided to use anime to get new viewers especially girls but while the anime was great the story in detail was terrible. Having the Protagonist choose death over living with his new wife and oncoming child WAS A MASSIVE FUCKING COPE OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This series will be the least favorite for A LOT OF GODZILLA FANS.

@@30seconds2impact It's as deffinition said. It's because Haruo (sic?) still had a deep hatred for Godzilla that he felt his continued existence would be a threat to the future of humanity as a whole, and that's why he tried to erase as much of the past as possible, including himself (and his hate for Godzilla), the technology that would have ultimately brought about the brink of extinction for humanity again, and his braindead (ex-)girlfriend who happened to still have functional nanotechnology all over her body. He's accepted that Godzilla is now a part of the world, but it's the resentment that he developed during his entire lifetime that he feared would ultimately bleed into those he interacted with, not to mention the reintroduction of the the technology and revelations that were given unto him during his attempted brainwashing. Ideologies and philosophies carry way more meaning and influence to people, especially children (which are the future, both in a literal and figurative sense), than you might think. He knows that better than most (if not all) of the other surviving humans as well as the tribe that they integrated with. That said, I'm not defending the Godzilla movies. Yes, they are bad; Toho certainly could have done a better job of conveying a cohesive story that smoothly transitioned together, but I think you should give it at least a little credit for trying to be more than just BIG BAD MONSTER FIGHTS BIG BAD MONSTER WHO WILL WIN FIND OUT ON THE NEXT EPISODE OF DRAGONBALL Z.

@@TheInstaShark BIG BAD MONSTER FIGHTS BIG BAD MONSTER WHO WILL WIN FIND OUT ON THE NEXT EPISODE OF DRAGONBALL Z. A post on another Godzilla review said SO a giant tree shaped like Godzilla is fighting 3 giant tapeworms gone, Super Saiyan. I understand where you are coming from with the decision Hauro made. But here is where the writers MESSED UP BEYOND BELIEF. They wrote the character into a box. The demise of Hauro was combination Moby Dick and Kobayashi Maru. When he started on his last flight I kept thinking the Exif won. The Exif wanted to sacrifice Hauro to Ghidora, using their spirituality trying to convince him. He came to the realization that this was wrong that life was a struggle, and that life as painful as it was worth it. Yet after he comes out of that spell the Exif, put him under knowing they were defeated put that suggestion in his head that since he did not give himself to Ghidora, there would always be a threat looming. Putting him in a no-win scenario. Should he die he did so because the Exif wanted to sacrifice him from the start. If he lived he was AFRAID that the Exif could bring Ghidora back. Even the morality over his death was warped. Please tell me any other story where the protagonist dies ANGRY. Making the real winner of the whole movie that creepy guy who took out his eye(Since I can't have him no one will). I will definitely say that the Exif was a critique of Cults and religion and a good version of that. The idea of the main character dying at the end of the film of the story happens a lot really but nowhere that I can remember does anyone die angry. You can say Moby Dick but the story was told not thru Ahab but thru Ishmael's eyes. Ahab was the antagonist of the story. I completely understand that the writers were trying to make Philosophical and Ideological points, but a lot of those points they made seemed hollow like from a college freshman. Who knows maybe I am looking at it from a Literary Perspective. Thanks for a great response. Be good Bro!.

A funny thing was left out... Haruo never really experienced humanity as it was. He experienced humanity as its end and two other species at their end. His "sacrifice" is pretty moot when all it accomplishes is denying the Mothra tribe the ability to advance themselves and use technology for good as they inherently lack the ability to hate. He even kills a comatose girl and abandons his unborn child and its mother over his own fear of what "might" happen. This movie was terrible and its message is not complex or thought provoking, it's bad writing.
@Tanx33
@Tanx33 5 лет назад
Yeah I felt like the end must have been written when the writer was extremely drunk and depressed over a break up or something. Dude jumps to massive conclusion based on some possible outcome that may have a chance to happen in the future, probably long after he's already dead,...so.... suicide??? "Suicide is the only way to keep my emo from destroying the Earth!" He decides this for all of humanity. Couldn't he at least have tried to maybe have a discussion about where humanity should go from there. There's not exactly a ton of people left. Pretty sure they'd be able to come up with a plan that would satisfy almost everyone. Why not kill Godzilla and then disarm the planet or something. He just decides to surrender and live under the rule of one all powerful Monster. Perhaps after this giant ordeal of having to abandon the planet for all those years and lose almost all of humanity could be some kind of learning experience that leads to a peaceful and prosperous earth after they kill Godzilla. Also it's not like there isn't a possibility of humanity advancing technologically while living underground or maybe finding new ways to fight without great technology. They may be all fine and happy to live that way for now, but eventually they could change over time and start planning to bring the giant monster down. This whole story somewhat reminded me of the first part of the "The Fable of the Dragon-Tyrant" by Nick Bostrom, but without the good last half and ending. There's a great youtube video of the story by CGP Grey.

With one of the twins impregnated he should be brave enough to face the future and let go of the past. Instead, he chose to die while destroying the last means of technology. Perhaps it was right to destroy technology to gain temporary peace but instead of persevering and teaching the last vestige of humanity what not to do he just chose to die fearing he would be the cause for the next disaster. That's lame. After all he's been through he should be strong enough to believe in himself and humanity not leaving everything to his "innocent" son.

I think he wouldn’t have been able to control his legacy without another conflict happening amonfst the survivors. His legacy would have been used by the survivors to keep following the destructive path by provoking Godzilla who is basically the guardian of earth not humanity. He knows he can’t control the survivors or lead them. They already want or assume they will do things without his say or command. He basically cleans the slate. Erasing the tools and his legacy that could be used to indoctrine future generations to follow the path that has destroyed old humanity. So indirectly, he did so his family and people could survive longer on an alternate path. Possibly evolve biologically to superior beings like Houtua who adapted physically and developed meta human abilities.

I feel the ending had a more sinister meaning. Metphese said that Gihdora always spares at least one priest to ensure his re-summoning. We also know that he somehow forced one of the sisters to speak Gihdoras name but she was not consumed like everyone else and survived the final battle. It was also her that said the Hotua didn't know hate but Haruo never asked anyone else. In the end we see the Hotua performing a religious ritual that they were never shown to do before to something that wasn't Mothra. I think the sister has become the new Gihdora priestess and is using Haruo as a martyr to lead the survivors down a path that will harken the return of Gihdora and the destruction of Earth. In short, Haruo saught to save the world, but just as Metphese had planned, he will be the symbol used to destroy it.

For all those people who really dont understand the ending, let me summarize it for you. Haruo killed himself in his kamikaze attempt because his hatred to godzilla earth is still with him and his past. He cannot let go of himself from the past. And the technology? If technology still exist, it will just corrupt the whole world and that is also the reason why he brought the girl with nanometal with him. Here's the last reason why Haruo must not live. Haruo is hatred itself you can see everyone in this movie is happy in the ending and does not hold a grudge to godzilla earth. But Haruo still hates him and knows that if he does not disappear or kills himself cycle will still continue and ghidorah will return and cause more damage. Thats why he has to kill himself inorder to vanish with the hatred that still burns inside of him. All of the people wants Haruo to live and continue with his new family. But does not understand why he killed himself so heres the reason and make sure you understand it carefully!

Also I would’ve wished he knocked up both sisters.

Oh My Yato Cool. So now his kid will probably also hate Godzilla and have no parental figure around to explain to him what hatred is because the Houtua don’t have any understanding of the concept of hatred. @bw8383
@bw8383 5 лет назад
@tiffini. I tend to disagree. Part of him killing himself is flip the script on his legend. Remember, he is considered a hero amongst “his” people for his determination (driven by hate) to end Godzilla at almost any cost. If he was around and the tech and nanometal survived he knew his name would be used to continue the path of destruction that pretty much brought them to a second extinction. They and Houtua wouldn’t survive a third attempt using the same tech that had failed to win, unless they follow the path of the belasiludo and exif and discard their humanity altogether. What drove him to this was how he knew he was being used by metphis and now this tech was being repaired by the professor without him being told gave him ptsd. That he would lose control and his legacy would be used to continue the destructive cycle. Personally, I’m not so pessimistic about humanity and technology but maybe the writers are saying there is another way to evolve? Like the Houtua who have adapted and are physically and a few are psionically superior to space born humans. Technically, they are evolved humans evolving biologically which I guess is permissible by Godzilla... Maybe in another twenty or even a hundred thousand years they will evolve to superior beings like Godzilla or replace him? That’s the hope that Haruo gave his people because he knows letting the past survive would not give their people this chance to evolve and start with a clean slate.

I liked this series emphasis on the philosophical. I think that's what a good Anime story should be about. How many stories are willing to let the protagonists lose? The story feels like its about accepting that loss as an inevitable and natural conclusion. Humans had so many factors working against them. If they continued to fight against Godzilla they would have lost more and more until nothing was left. If they had followed the Bilusaludo they would have ceased to be human and nothing could stop the Bilusaludo from controlling the Earthlings. If they put their trust into the Exif the planet itself would have been swallowed up by their god. And the Irony is even if they survived all of that, defeated Godzilla and retook Earth, they would just create a new monster to undo civilization once more. In the end there was only one option for peace. They had to let go of their hatred and accept the world as it is. It's clear the protagonist didn't want to die. But the Exif went into detail about why he needed to be the one to show people the way. Someone who wanted to live, who wanted to burn Godzilla into ash, decided to sacrifice himself and humanities last hope for prosperity, all so the cycle could be broken. Worlds eventually birth monsters that destroy them. That could not happen if humanity never becomes capable of it. In the final scene we're shown that because of his actions the last remnants of humanity honor him. They still do fear as they throw those knots into the fire, but they accept that fear and become happier for it.

This film is actually one of best ending you could ever expected from a monster film. It makes the story more interesting. I think this is kind of work that you need to look back after 10 years. Is destruction the ultimate outcome of any civilization? Is it correct to just live along side nature? What is the ultimate desire of humanity? No doubt, monster film fans will hate this ending as the film maker let them down. The script writer didn't really give a cheap answer like most other films. (It's very sad that most films are just trying to satisfy our most undeveloped needs, the addiction of excitement) Instead, the line between good and evil is blurred. The writer is trying to send out a message for those who would try to understand! We think thus what we are! It is kind of interesting that the writer point out the ending of those who gives up thinking and joining the cult. Anyway, I don't normally write review, but it is indeed a very good ending! It is indeed a bit too deep for its audiences/fans. It is like giving a child a philosophy class, maybe it chooses a wrong set of audience.

You missed that the ending where they do the symbolic burnings of the effigies for the year, the giant wall painting/carving/whatever is an abstraction of Mothra, and it is very religious the prayer they say. So when they something to the effect “to our wrathful lord/for our wrathful lord” (something like that) they may be referring to Mothra as a divine protector. And we saw one of the twins communicating to Haruo through a giant insect egg likely containing Mothra, so Mothra may indeed hatch and save mankind. Oh, and I thought that because Haruo heard Metophies still talking to him about his hatred or patience about waiting for civilization to destroy itself, Haruo was somehow still a conduit for Ghidorah to return, and that’s why he needed to die along with the flight suit. Just my hypothesis, kinda like Frodo in LotR.

The trilogy took a different approach. Instead of the old fashion monster beat downs, which I loved, the trilogy took a deeper path of Godzilla. Godzilla was the result of mankind's lust for power and destruction, thus ironically giving birth to the exact same thing (Nuclear warfare created Godzilla). Godzilla in this trilogy, and just like the original film, represents the monster of man kind. Even though I wanted some kick ass monster fights, this trilogy was some what fresh and was pretty damn good. Don't mess with the true king.

While I agree and liked the explanation I couldn't help feel it was a long winded tale to tell us that Humans are a terrible concept. And that all the previous deaths leading to this revelation was irrelevant. Definitely anticlimactic, what was, I supposed initially was a good survival/sci-fi/thriller became a meandering existential chore. Enjoyed the animation and character/environment designs though. Fei JoA , that is a perfect explanation of how I felt about this trilogy. I really anticipated the 3rd one but it was not what was expected and for what it was worth, I really got bored and sick of 40 + minutes of the same talking and talking and talking and the characters being more clueless than horror movie victims...of course until the very last second... 'ohhhhh, it was metphies behind it'..didn't seem obvious at all at any point. Just keep blaming Godzilla seems much smarter, especially based on him having to defend himself or the planet is the only time he used his power.
@bluebee29
@bluebee29 4 года назад
Just watched this and I have mixed feelings with the ending. Some realizations: Metphies is the true villain in this trilogy. He molded and groomed Haruo as the ultimate sacrifice lamb. He cultivated his anger since his youth and manipulated his emotions. One of the reasons why he killed himself was not only because to destroy the technology and his hate, but also because he was truly lost. He wasn't sure if his anger was really his. If he truly hated Godzilla, he wouldn't have hesitated to become sacrifices as Vulture spears to kill Godzilla in the Mecha city. This is the same man who thanked the Bilusaludo and ignored the members merging with mecha city. He had risked so many lives to reclaim Earth. And when he did have the opportunity to end Godzilla, he didn't. He backed out. His sins and losses are far too great now. Even with a kid on the way (imo unnecessary plot), he couldn't bear this heavy burden. Not to mention he was already imprinted on the left eye by Metphies to be the next Golden King avatar ("Ghidorah will always be watching you Haruo"). His character _has to die_ . Haruo's choices had always been influenced by Metphies, the Council, and the Bilusaludos. His own decision to die was to reclaim his destiny and this was his true victory.

It was really about Humanity discovering that its own hatred for things was ultimately poison to everything around it that will destroy everything. That's what Ghidorah represented in this movie. He only managed to appear because of Humanity's long desire for destruction through wars and such, long before Godzilla appeared, came to the breaking point with Godzilla appearing as the final straw to break the camel's back. Haruo was the hottest flame of hatred and passion for destruction, at that point which is what Metphise used as a power source to enable Ghidorah to appear. Even if Haruo destroyed Metphise ability to guide Ghidorah. The creature could always return as long as Haruo existed to have that hatred for Godzila which became a part of who he was. Ghidorah is the ultimate apocalypse to the universe, unlike Godzilla who seeked to restore balance to nature by ridding Humanity of their civilization that they built on war and such. Ghidorah seeks erode everything around him till nothing is left. Haruo realized that Ghidorah could always return as long as Humanity was obsessed with technology for destruction and his own hatred for Godzilla. He had to remove both of these things using Godzilla, so that Humanity can move on and not fall victim to its past again. While Godzilla ultimately survived. The trilogy seem to suggest that he will act as he always has: A guardian for nature and will only come to punish humanity should they return to what they were before. It would seem that with Haruo's death and the last of the technology destroyed. Godzilla will leave Humanity alone.

I thought the entire trilogy was incredibly boring, and the third film in particular was extremely pretentious and pseudo intellectual. The other two were basically just the same flick, and they sucked to be honest, and while the third was different, I really didn't like it, except for some of the animations, and the twin chicks; they were well designed. I think there's a balance between creating art that actually entertains an audience, and presenting a moral teaching via the storytelling. I think the films' creators have a right to explore this, but they went overboard, and the end result is just a drag and not fun to watch at all. I can't tell you how many times I rolled my eyes at yet another expositional piece of boring dialogue in the movie. Take the scene where Ghidorah appears and attacks the spaceship. They have one character literally shout out everything that is happening to the ship, and it seems to go on forever. That scene alone made me wanna slap a Jap. If you really require that much verbal exposition, then maybe the story you're trying to communicate isn't exactly suited for a freakin monster movie. But it is kind of typical for Japanese storytelling. They tend to do these over-dramatically larger than life, super meaningful and deep stories, that usually only end up slowly putting you to sleep. You just have to stand in awe at how serious this movie takes itself. It certainly had lots of potential, that's true, but ultimately this trilogy just fails in my opinion. And of course there's gonna be loads of people going "mbwahhh how deep and philosophical!!!" *mind blown* but that's just teenagers confusing nonsense with profoundness. Good animations and special effects, nice sound effects and conceptually not half bad actually, but also tons of boring dialogue, pretentious themes and poor execution of what could have been quite an interesting approach. I'd say the entire trilogy viewed as a whole is a 4 out of 10 for me. Mind you, this is my opinion, I'm not saying anybody else can't like it, so don't get mad if you did enjoy it or because I called you a stupid teenager. I just thought it was somewhat of a waste of time, for me personally.

I 100% agree with you, every one of these movies and ESPECIALLY the last one was so utterly and completely full of itself that I verbally exasperating and rolled my eyes numerous times. Especially when the movie started to get up it's own ass with the constant monologuing and diatribe ramblings of religious belief. I never watch anime like that. There always seems to be one bad guy in every anime where the guy rambles on and on about how his existential view of the world caused him to seek it's destruction because some random dude pissed on his favorite Cherry Blossom tree and ruined his childish view of innocence and beauty or some shit. I was suckered into this movie with Gidorah and was in high hopes of a solid monster fight, but I completely forgot how utterly terrible the last movies have been. The absolute only thing that I enjoyed about these movies is how the monsters had evolved into legendary godlike forms of themselves. You get to see Godzilla's potential when he is untethered by the restrictions of nature itself and the world acclimates itself to serve his rule. Other than that, these movies have been nothing but a waste of time and drain on resources.

What I wanna know is if Godzilla died when the Vulture smacked into him. However, since Godzilla Earth survived so many atomic bombs that their craters could be seen from space when he was only 150ft tall, I doubt a flying 20 ft robot smacking into him would kill him when he's 1000 ft tall. The reason I want to know if he died is that the last shot of Godzilla in the Movie is the vulture snacking into him with a big explosion, then that's it.

The moment the trilogy kicked off the whole story went completely off the rails for me. He was threatening to blow up a section of the ship because he thought they were leaving the elderly to die due to incompassion and lack of resources, when in fact his grandfather and an entire population of elderly were accepting their deaths so they can set foot on any planet once again... only to blow up anyways on way to the planet... This whole entire scene seemed to only exist to trademark his character's rage scream that he frequently does throughout the trilogy to the point it had no emotional impact whatsoever. Monster designs were top notch though👌. Some of the imagery was indeed breathtaking. Also, I find it funny that if you just watch the three trailers you'll see the MC go from "he's going to kill Godzilla!" to "I don't think I can kill Godzilla..." You think?😂

Spot on pretty much, except by the end we don’t quite see Haruo believe in the Mothra culture, but rather he understands that his hate can be learned and he should end the battle with Godzilla, to everyone outside of it past praising his sacrifice he was was just doing what he though was right. But in the end Mothra got through to him in a way and he coincidentally followed Mothras mindset without realizing it. By the end of the film Haruo is faced with either siding with Ghidorah and Mephist’s or helping Godzilla/humanity, but Mothra saves him from the vision and still gives him an alternative. Give Godzilla what you want, fight for what you believe in, but go on living past a never ending conflict for the future. Mothra died fighting Godzilla but left her egg buried and unharmed never to know the wrath of the king of monsters. Haruo does the same because he had a child with Maina. So while Haruonis at peace ending his hate with Godzilla, the bigger picture is that he won on Mothras term since he has a child to live on for him

The trilogy was a complete clusterfuck. All characters were acting stupidly, Methpis'es arguments didn't make any sense whatsoever and they were full of logical fallacies that a 5 year old child could deconstruct like nothing. From the beginning to the end nothing made any sense whatsoever. I also did not understand the rules by which the three headed monster was guided by that eye thingy and why did it require Haruos sacrifice in particular, why he is the special one, the explanations by Methpis were just a bunch of nonsensical religious bullshit. Absolutely nothing makes sense. The only good thing I can say about this trilogy is that the animation was good, but even then I've seen much better. I don't even understand how anybody could like it. What's there to like really? Besides animation. The storytelling was horrible and contrary to what you said in the video, writing was painfully terrible, cringy and amateurish.

I agree with everything you said but I did enjoy the displays of Godzilla's amazing abilities (which were sadly barely used in this one). The writing was wayy to talky and the characters acted like complete morons and listening to metphis incessantly spout truths about humanity wrapped in complete garbage was a beating.

The story was really about not allowing Humanity to survive, but able to save it from its desire for destruction and hatred. This was a spiritual battle with physical representation.

Well... By the end of the story all humans are dead (unless humans could somehow reproduce with Hatuos, which a) would be shitty writing, because cross-species mating doesn't really work and it has been clearly stated that Hatuos are not humans, b) the descendants of humans and Hatuos wouldn't be really humans anyway, would they, so what are we talking about here anyway) and so even if Haruo didn't destroy that flying thing, the desire for destruction and hatred would die with him. On top of that Haruo was hardly the only human survivor with desire for destruction of Godzilla. The other survivors surely still hated Godzilla and wanted it destroyed. At least some of them. So nothing was accomplished. But you know what, that's not even my problem. That last part of it, where Haruo killed himself so that his hatred would not affect Hatuos and humans would not be able to have access technology, ok. Wasn't that bad. It's everything that happened before it, that lead to that ending, that was incredibly contrived. The first ever major decision in the movie was already incredibly contrived. Humans leaving Earth. There was just one Godzilla, Godzilla can't be present everywhere at once, so humans could still live on Earth no problem, just avoid Godzilla. It was stupid idea. And the only way to make it believable that humans could even evacuate to the space was to introduce 2 alien species in first two minutes of the movie??? WTF? Anyway, nobody reasonable would make such decision. Staying on Earth with Godzilla was clearly more intelligent, safer, decision, than evacuating to space, where they had no hope of finding habitable planet (especially since prior to the story, not one, but two alien races couldn't find any other habitable planet other than Earth - alright, the Exifs probably were able to and were lying, but humans couldn't know that, they would be basing their decision making on the fact that Exifs couldn't find other habitable planets). Also if they all decided to stay on Earth, waited for 20 years on Earth til Haruo came up with his plan, the original Godzilla would be dead (Haruo's plan did work after all) and humanity would not be 'saved' from their desire for destruction and hatred, they would be saved from Godzilla. It's all stupid. I could go on. The story was just a mess and incredibly contrived. The movie requires incredibly high suspension of disbelief and that's not even the worst of it. As R BZ says, I did enjoy the displays of Godzilla's power and I would have enjoyed the story much more if it would be about overcoming ones shortcomings in order to beat the Godzilla. Finding ingenious solutions to beating it. It started that way. When the first movie ended, I was at least mildly interested to know how are they going to stop that super huge Godzilla of the size of a mountain, with almost all of their technology gone. I hoped for some ingenuity. I guess I shouldn't have. The first movie was bad enough that I should have known, that writers have no idea what they're doing. Second movie confirmed it...

The 3rd movie antagonist kept saying that being destroyed is the only way for peace. Haruo went against the him, but ended up killing himself for peace.

A very Japanese philosophical turn in this trilogy. Similar to Blue Gender and a few other anime. In the end, technology and knowledge are destroyed, imagination, creativity, and freedom are eliminated. Humans are reduced to ignorant, innocent, superstitious children, enslaved to life in a neolithic village culture for eternity. I would note that the people who write stories like this never seem interested in the option of withdrawing from our complex world and living in monastic, simple conditions. They just like feeling superior to those of us who enjoy our freedom to expand our thoughts and explore a reality beyond that of grubbing for existence as hunter-gatherers.

Personally, i loved it. Yes, i wanted some monster vs monster action but this series took a whole different direction; like a psychological thriller type against monsters. Idk how to explain it, but it was good...it was good.

This doesn't make any sense. Godzilla maybe a force of nature and even gihdora maybe an embodiment of an eventuality but that's what being human is looking at nature and fighting tooth and nail to stand against it and rebuild in its wake regardless of the amount of death and destruction. Even searching for an eternal life is part of that. Yea maybe the universe ends in some kinda death but whos to say by then we dont find a way to reboot the universe or jump to another one? The MC gave up everything in the end and I think it was foolish. Dooming humanity everyone else to being stuck under the guise of godzilla. You fight and procreate a legacy to endure, explore, and build. He took an easy way out because he was scared of gihdora. What a disappointing ending. Not even a decent twist. Maybe it's just me but fuck this "godzilla is an unstoppable force of nature." And my will to live and prosper and create is the imoveable object let see who wins big G, dam I hope they do a second series. I mean this ending isnt even bitter sweet. This is a story of the authors look on life and the author needs serious antidepressents if he thinks life is so pointless.
