Guess what? A movie doesn’t just have to be “fun” to be good. “Fun” is one of the many things that actually make a movie good, but when your movie only accomplishes “fun”, it’s safe to say that your movie sucks.

It had moments where it didn't take itself seriously but it also had moments that set it up to be one of the best spy thriller movies in the last 2 decades. It's about quality If you want your movies to have "campy" tones and low effort acting then fine, you do you. Just don't be surprised when Hollywood uses you to justify low standards

1. Ignores the movie's opening that expresses Kong's longing for others of his kind in Hollow Earth. 2. Yes, the tooth subplot introduces a main character. But it also shows Kong's trust in humans and their symbiotic relationship. Skar king uses the tooth to make fun and outcast Kong in Hollow Earth. 3. Haircuts are part of your criticism? 4. They called in a veterinarian who has experience with these titans to help take care of Kong, who did you want them to call? 5. Kong has bonded with Jia. I doubt Kong would be willing to talk to just anybody who knows sign language. 6. Ignores Jia telling her newly adopted mom how she doesn't fit in in her new life- which leads into her mom suspecting she'd want to stay in Hollow Earth where she is shown to be fitting in. 7. Kong and Suko kill and eat food together? You meant to say Suko shows off his intellect by attempting to kill Kong and get away, but Kong constantly overcomes and attempts to build trust with him. And at this point this wasn't even shown purely to build a relationship, Kong used Suko to find his way to others of his kind. You're really nitpicking for criticisms here and shielding it with the "I love the old goofy Godzilla movies, but this is too far" trope.
1. When I watch back, I have sympathy to Kong as he is wonder the Hollow Earth alone hoping to find his kind somewhere in the hills and valleys. 2. Kong find Suko and forced him to find the leader of the apes that ambush him and Suko truly used his mischift to trick Kong and ran away. What makes me intresting is how Kong not abused Suko once he fought the serpent he just like "Go Boy". Yes he did "abused" Suko as a melee weapon once. But it begins to show Suko looked Kong as a great father he wants. 3. Skar King displays many reference when I watch, he is Lord Shen and Koba. Ruthless and violent dictator to the other kong species. 4. Dr Andrews and Jia had a good bond and understand Jia could not fit in with the modern world. Trapper even advice to Bernie where want to share with the world to fix his reputation, its better let the Iwi lived their ways and never expose it. What happend to the people of Skull Island is because of humans from the outside world came in like APEX building their station and Monarch. Causing their people extincion left Jia witch include Ghidorah storm and Kamazos. Worst, world governments wanted to take over Hollow Earth and the multibillion cooperations to exploit Hollow Earth resources like in the comics Godzilla x Kong: The Hunted where Raymond hunt small titans as their trophy. The movie has good topic if you can listen their conversation or the titans body language and expresion. While Planet of the Apes have conversation like humans or Disney's Lion King remake using real animals but has no facial expression. This has a right tone that using body language and facial expresion without dialogs and its up to us the audience to understand it. As a bonus point from me, some scene has a meme potencial too. 😂

Unlike Doktor Skipper, this guy actually provided evidence that wasn’t just “AmErIcA dOeSnT uNdErStAnD gOdZiLlA” and go on about how Godzilla is specifically meant to be a villain (obviously not true) But none of that at all excuses this film from being complete slop in comparison to the prior films. Just because someone doesn’t want a film to be utter slop, doesn’t mean they want it to be a masterpiece. All you’re doing is creating a massive false dichotomy. If you actually watched the video, you’d see that this guy genuinely liked GvK, as did I, and that’s because that movie was genuinely good even if it was fun and a little silly at times. GxK just feels like it was forced into the MonsterVerse timeline, and none of it even remotely feels important at all. Plus, it doesn’t help that the CGI was pretty rough at times which breaks the immersion completely.

I hate when critics say the monsterverse is ''awful and boring'' compared to Minus One both are seperate movies about Godzilla , this is why Godzilla is still iconic.If we had Minus One over and over again the franchise will lose steam and die out.
The Obi-Wan meme, "That's... why I'm here" Seriously Kong had so much characterization in this movie and it was nice to see his interactions with the other apes be devoid of any and all dialogue.
I'm a super fan of the franchise. I'm talking an "own every film" super fan of the franchise. I'm talking all 38 films but technically 40 because I also own the original Mothra and of course Kong: Skull Island is a part of the series as well. I LOVED this film. I also LOVED Godzilla Minus One. They are about as different as any two entries in this series could be but I love both of them for different reasons. Godzilla remains one of the most dynamic and versatile film franchises of all time.
Movie was exactly what I expected it to be… a big, dumb, and loud tribute to Showa era monster flicks. It delivered on all fronts, and GOD bless it. We all should let our inner child be happy once in a while.

I grew up with Godzilla delivering missile drop kicks to a giant robot wearing a giant Godzilla skin suit, who was brought to earth by aliens from outer space. @@pete.lopenoNo those Showa era movies were known by Japanese audiences back in the 60s to be bad (post Godzilla vs mothra). They were campy b- movies made on shoestring budgets for little kids. That’s why they hardly made money and were relegated to cult status for 40 years. That being said there is still a certain charm and craftsmanship that came with those movies from the miniature making to the suit design. This is just making a shit movie on purpose because they know G fans are just gonna line up anyways.

If you didn’t like the movie it’s a skill issue on your end. “No character to attach yourself to” my dude Kong is the character to get attached to. His journey parallels the Iwei tribe girl’s journey. So much of this movie is non verbal dialogue and it is done so well. This both pays homage to old kaiju films but also solidifies itself as an example of modern spectacle done right. You did not make a single valid critique in the first half all the way to the ad break, instead talking about how you didn’t like effects or thought the giant monsters didn’t look realistic. You want realism? In a kaiju movie set in the gravity weird hollow earth? You are a pretty bad critic if you mean that XD. Complaining about special effects in a monster movie for 10 minutes is a waste of your time son. Yeah, that's the point dude. The whole crowd I was with didn't come for Minus One we came for big monke and big lizard fighting other big monke and big lizard.
Except the big monkey and big lizard fights still sucked. Compare the fights in this one to those from GvK or King of the Monsters. Those had a sense of scale, they felt awesome. Here the camera was always way too close to everything so you couldn’t get a sense of scale. And the editing was distractingly hyperactive, it felt like the editor made it while working on a diet of cocaine and Red Bull.

So movies can't be fun anymore? It can't be about big monsters fighting against other big monsters? I like this movie because that's what it is. It's not trying to be the next big thing, it's about Godzilla and kong fighting monsters. That's basically it, it stays in it's on lane and it does it very well.
How is this movie fun? All the fights combined are barely 20 minutes long in a 2 HOUR movie! The fights were also way too quick and pretty unsatisfying to watch. Furthermore 3 of the fights happened mostly offscreen e.g Kong vs water serpent thing, Godzilla vs Tiamat and Godzilla vs Shimo. There could be more examples but I don’t remember, that’s how forgettable the movie was. There’s nothing fun about this movie. Be fr, tell me one thing you liked about this movie other than the kaiju fights.

One major difference; For some reason people understand Batman and Robin is bad and don't defend it, while Monsterverse fans both do and don't understand it's bad and still defend it.
The tone for this was really not that much different... It was just amped up. Why are people acting like GvK was some kind cinematic masterpiece? Lol. It was just as silly as this; this one was just on steroids.

Watched the entire review and I’m still clueless as to how it’s bad. Seems to me every time something fun and goofy happens he makes fun of it in a sarcastic manner instead of a thorough argument actually explaining his point. Just because it’s a fun, goofy movie doesn’t make it bad, not everything has to be deep and thought provoking, especially a Kaiju movie,
Only thing I dislike in the story is those dumb pacifist humans who thinks they are some kind of Disney princess in a Disney musical that can coexist with giant monsters with the power of friendship and understanding , like the protagonist of that movie avatar with blue giant people. Humanity decision makers are lead by freaking hippies, theyll let cities be used as giant fighting ring if it would save the monsters they desperately simp on. A complete opposite of Pacific rim, one the reason I like that movie is because humanity fights back.
You're not a cynic you're a snob. The way Kong got the glove made sense in the film. He had frost bite and a bad injury to his hand. Godzilla went around powering himself up before the end fight. You only want the darker Godzilla and thats ok for you but not everyone does and thats fine too. Quit trying to gate keep what is or is not good

The difference between Godzilla x Kong being stupid and every other big studio movie being stupid is that GxK at least has the respect for the audience to not even pretend that it isn’t stupid.
This was one of those movies you really gotta temper your expectations with, especially coming off the success of Minus One because it will definitely not achieve the same heights. Is KxG stupid, nonsensical and do the human characters suck and are mediocrely written? Yeah. But the monster throwdowns were sick and I got to see Godzilla suplex kong so that alone was worth it for me. This was basically a dumb popcorn movie to watch with your friends while you’re housing down some snacks and it succeeded in that.
I may be in the monitority, but I liked the human characters; Dan Stevens' discount Peter Quil/Kaiju veterinarian, especially. The little girl brings enough emotion, just like the last film. Alex Jo- ..I mean...the podcast guy is still funny. This one actually had the most enjoyable human moments in the franchise, besides maybe John C. Reily in Skull Island.
But a “dumb popcorn flick to watch with your friends” does not mean it has to be a “bad” movie. Would you consider Kung Fu Panda as something to watch with friends. I would, and the fact of the matter is that while the premise is inherently dumb (That being about a Panda learning Kung Fu) the movie is treated with respect and people put work in to it so as to make it both compelling visually, and narratively. What did Godzilla 2014 do? It gave respect to Godzilla and made him a force of Nature. They made it so that while Godzilla is a result of Nuclear Testing, the Muto were the result of Strip Mining, and arguably worse industry. They gave the creature weight, and while we were blue balled for the majority of the film, when the King finally showed up, it was amazing. Kong Skull Island. Payed Homage to the original King Kong while also reinventing old ideas and making them work within the new “Monsterverse”. They respected not only the history of Kong, but his character, and from there, they also respected the characters in the film, which is the best character wise. I was actually cheering for each and every one of them. Godzilla King of the Monsters. Each major monster gets at least one scene to show off just how cool, awesome, and otherwise, amazing they were. Mothra got the Waterfall, Cloudburst, and Sacrifice. Rodan had his Dogfight. Ghidorah had his many fights with Godzilla and his Alpha Call, while Godzilla had his Fights with Ghidorah, and his Burning form. Each time, they payed homage to the past, while respecting the monsters as they are now. Furthermore, they also respected the characters within the film, whether they were good or not. Serizawa and his sacrifice was one of the best scenes ever, not because it was beautiful or cool looking, or any number of things that it was and wasn’t. The scene was great because it showed a man coming to peace with his demons, while respecting the power that had come from it. GvK My least Favorite film out of the ones listed, yet I can still respect it. King and Godzilla are given a good match that does not feel like a cop out. While Mecha goes down a bit to easily and a bit to quick for my taste, I can understand why. Otherwise, they did a decent job with the monsters. GxK. What does it do to respect what came before and what is to come. Did it treat the monsters less like action heroes, and more like forces of nature and characters with their own desires and wants. Heck if you want to look at it that way GxK pretty much paid perfect tribute to previous Godzilla films as it was a big dumb cheesy fun movie.

Everything single film bar GxK at minimum did something that portrayed the Monsters in a way that was “respectful” (I use the word loosely as it’s the closes synonym for what I am trying to say) to what the monsters were. These characters do have a history. Should we pay no mind to those histories, and leave them to fall back into random fan cults and theorists. How many Americans before 2014 had seen a Godzilla Movie. How many of those had seen a Japanese Godzilla film. Should we ignore the history of Godzilla in favor of making a “more appealing film” that fits a more American narrative. Should we have Godzilla look more like a Dinosaur and run from the military. We get what Tristar made when we don’t try to “respect” or even acknowledge the past. If we treat the character as separate from where they came from, how can we expect the character to remain what makes them “them”? You might say that the film being campy was the best way to ode to the past, but I would argue that GvK and KotMs did a much better job at that. Skull Island did a great job too as it brought forward “Skull Island” and other ideas, characterizations, and elements from the previous films.
Some people really watched this movie expecting it to be an Oscar winning story lmao. Regular people like us just wanted Monke and Black Lizard beat the shit out of Monke and White Lizard and they delivered.

guardians of the galaxy is a bandit in space teaming up with a talking raccoon, tree, a bodybuilder, a mantis and a green chick but the plot is good. So, we understand that we can have both silly characters and a good story.

The silly ones are the ones considered low points in the series both critically and financially. There's a reason every time Toho tried to bring Godzilla back in 1984, 2000 and 2014, they try to make it a serious movie with a decently written plot.
These big Kauji Monsterverse movies tend to be poorly written, but at the very least they don’t pretend to try to be anything more than what they are. They know *exactly* what they are and they embrace it. Besides, the monsters themselves tend to have more care put into them than the actual story.
Literally the only thing I didn’t like about this movie was the monsters seeming too light and fast this robbing us of the spectacle and scale of the previous movies, and the fights were not nearly long enough.
I love how yall are agreeing that this movie was dumb as f*ck while at the same time dragging him for saying the movie was dumb as f*ck. If you don’t mind dumb plots, fine. But don’t attack people for not liking dumb plots. This movie is definitely for Fast & Furious type of fans who can turn their brains off to enjoy a movie. It’s not for everyone. And that’s okay.
It really is sad when you get something that people say is great just because it doesn't have a political agenda despite being of the same writing quality as the shit they say is bad now.

Aight, so I decided to actually watch the video unlike some of the comments and here are my thoughts. Firstly, the film 'honoring the Showa era' was never really a defense for the New Empire, but rather a defense for the Monsterverse as a whole since there's been a massive controversy between there being an 'objective' way to do Godzilla, which is stupid. Even then, I'd say a more fitting word would be 'inspired by the Showa era'. Next, the film being inspired by guardians of the galaxy 2, you bring it up a bunch of times and I can't really tell if it's meant to be a criticism. As for the idea that none of the movie matters, I disagree, there's a bunch of things that matters such as Kong's longing for family and to be with his species again. He later finds some of them... and then gets jumped, but this makes us fear that Kong might end up being rejected by the very people he so desperately wanted to be with (well, it at least made me think that way). The tooth is another example. In my opinion, it highlights a core theme within the movie, 'compassion over cruelty', it shows that by being compassionate and kind to others, it can ultimately help you become stronger. The missing tooth can hinder Kong's ability to eat and stuff, but thanks to his connection with humans, he won't have to worry about that. This is a pretty minor plot point in the movie but it does wonders to connect to themes in the movie. The BEAST glove also serves a similar role to the tooth. Minor nitpick here, but when the lady says that they thought life could only exist on the surface, she didn't mean it literally. She meant that they believed that life could only exist near the surface of the crust, and not anywhere deeper like into the mantle. Ok I'm a bit all over the place but now we have the I think criticism of the film being crazy over the top. I mean, one look at the trailer would have already made that clear but whatever. As for the titans moving around really fast, I mean, this film is already over top crazy and a way for Adam Wingard to express his inner child with over the top fights in crazy settings but okay. The titans destroying any sense of scale in the final Hollow Earth battle is fine since we're seeing the fight from a titan's perspective in a landscape where an entire ecosystem of giant monster exist. Sure, the scale could have been done better in the surface scenes, but it's still mainly from the titan's perspective. Now, the arguably most important scene in the movie, Kong finds his people. I have already written a really large comment so because I'm lazy, I recommend checking out Dangerville's video essay about why this scene is a masterclass of visual story telling (Also, Suko's care giver and the ape that attacked Kong are not the same, but I can understand why you thought so). As for Shimo, she's not really meant to be intimidating, she more so plays a victim character within the movie I mean, there's literally a scene where she stares up at the sky with pure joy at the end of the movie, know she has been freed. The fight scenes themselves are also pretty damn memorable, We got cool shots of Kong defending against Shimo's with his acts, or Godzilla's spiral beam or Godzilla and Kong tag teaming on Skar King with what seems to be an oversized baseball game for a moment. This film is balls to walls crazy, but there is a beauty to all of it, I probably explained it horribly in this comment the size of Godzilla himself, but this film does have a soul as a fun, action pact, goofy film with great visual storytelling. If you want a much better explanation, there is a channel called Filmspeak which has a great video detailing why they liked the New Empire in their video 'Why Godzilla remains Cinema's MVP'. I'm perfectly fine with people not liking the New Empire, there's certainly a lot of things I don't like which includes how they introduce Mothra into the story, or Godzilla's character in this film, or the Humans in their entirety, there's certainly a lot to dislike, but the film wouldn't have performed so well if there wasn't something to like about it other than Lizard slaps monke. I would like to see you respond so I can maybe try to debate with your ideas and see if we can come to a mutual agreement. "We do not care if we are seeing a bunch of bright lights and good looking visuals I love it because it looks cool" Dude a movie can be Good and have a good story, Pacific rim is not a work of Shakespeare but it did more than the bare minimum and to this day I still remember the main character name and all fight scenes. Aaaannnnd it being stupid is a problem why? Is entertainment not allowed to... ya know... entertain? Because even if it's nonsensical, it's still fun. Genuinely, I've never felt this much like a kid watching a kaiju movie since Godzilla King Of The Monsters 5 years ago. And frankly, it's a feeling that has been sorely missed. Frankly, this coming out almost immediately after Godzilla Minus One is a testament to how well loved and just how versatile Godzilla and kaiju in general has been. Both films were birthed out of a passion for the character and a love for the Showa Era, but take two completely different approaches. And frankly, I love it. Also, sidenote, since Godzilla x Kong is more of a Kong focused movie, it's more in line with King Kong than it is with Godzilla, serving as a fun romp for people to get away from their struggles. I.E.: Escapism. Ya ever watch any of the King Kong Tv Shows or King Kong Escapes? This is more in line with that.

because none of them have ever watched a Godzilla film outside of Shin and Minus One, they get on a high horse and think they know what Godzilla is supposed to be and completely ignore the 27+ other films made before Minus One that were just like GxK. Quite frankly, Minus One was extremely subpar and deserves more criticism than any MV film but all these "fans" want to act like it is gods gift to the world of cinema. Minus One is literally the same rehashed garbo story from nearly every Heisei era with a splash of 1954, it's nothing new, it's nothing innovative, and it certainly is nothing entertaining aside from the VERY LITTLE Godzilla moments we get to see. For a Godzilla movie, there's barely any of him in it, it's one of the shortest screen times he's ever had in a film. The film relies heavily on human drama and Japan's absolute need to victimize itself from WWII. I honestly don't understand the undying love for a mediocre film and the innate NEED for it's fans to gatekeep what Godzilla should and shouldn't be in cinema. These people are the most toxic, narcissistic, entitled trash I've ever seen in a franchise. That being said, the GxK was a really fun and great film, every film in the MV has been pretty good but it's people like this wanna-be Doktor Skipper that trash on something they have absolutely no knowledge in.

it's basically a modern 1954, but with less compelling human counter-parts. It is more of a melo-drama about Japan surviving the war, for all intent purposes it is a human movie through-and-through, Godzilla just happens to be in it for 11 minutes or less and not even until an hour into the film which is a two hour movie. It is a very slow film and I'd honestly call it a borefest--- but some people are into the melo-drama stuff, and that's cool too, but going into a movie called GODZILLA, I'd expect to see Godzilla and not a whole bunch human drama which honestly is quite propagandist about Japan in WWII. All in all, it's a good movie for what it is, but I honestly do not believe, for a single second, it deserves the praise it is getting-- not by any means, and to compare it to MV is absolute dog water logic when the genres are VERY different in contrast.@@MrMango-ci9qv
It isn’t for everyone, some people want a deep movie about the chaos Godzilla causes, some people want big monke boxing match. I personally thought it was great.

BOOOOO! I actually just got home from seeing it.This movie knew exactly what it was, and it was fun as hell. This was Showa era type of over the top silliness only with modern effects. Is that in and of itself a "defense?" Well, no, but it gives people exactly what they're buying a ticket for. It also leans into the absurdity and wears it proudly on its sleeve! At one point, a character says something along the lines of "The gravity was turned off by the...battery..doohicky..thing..." Love it!
Very happy you loved it and had fun. As for me, not so much. The multiple tons tooth removing .... solidly attached in the mouth .... whit no sawing of the tooth beforehand ...... and the aircraft did not crash right away ..... really really took me out of the movie. Sadly 😭 But kids loved it.

As for your corrections, a few of them are the result of the movie not explaining some of those things very well and I'd argue that even if it wasn't very important, a convinience is still worth pointing out. I agree that mere plot synopsis are not a very good way to review stuff. I'm willing to assume that he went with the logic of "the stupidity speaks for itself", tho if that's the case he should have at least clarified that. I can see this movie as a more extrene version of a sillier Heisei era (although those asoecrs if the Heisei era were the most controversial if not downright less favorable amongat me and other fans), tho I'd argue there is an interesting comparison to be made between the MV and the early Showa Era as well, tho that's a more general discussion for another day. This really feels like a movie that is made with a specific audience in mind and relies on you accepting and vibing with its absurdity, so I guess discussing the movie's quality will be more subjective than the previous MV entries. If you are wondering for any more negative reviews from fans, C Animus has talked the movie in a few different ways and Jakethesurgen is planning his own review. I suppose you might like C's approach more than Jake's, but that's up to you.
