The evolution of Shintani's style shown at 5:01 is amazing. He really learned to draw DB quickly. I'm a little sad that the final nose is bigger and ugly compared to the second one, but everything else looks a lot better. I still wish that the necks were slightly thicker, though.
@@hassankhalid8917 That will most likely be the case, yeah. But I just wish that Shintani eventually fixes that detail with the neck, the noses and the feature placement to bring his official designs closer to absolute perfection
@@taylorm3873 Don't know why being unable to draw makes a person less capable to criticize someone's art, but OK. I find it rather sad that people like you can't take the fact that other individuals share opinions that are different to yours, which probably leads to your last comment about how this video was 'obnoxious'.
6:50 I get why people were upset with the eye shape, but that expression is divine. I don't know how you can come up with a complaint for it. Also, I hope Gogeta's widows peak is a bit more defined in the movie itself.
Thanks for giving us a chance to explore more of the actual animations and designs of our fave anime. Especially for those who aren't experience analyzing the various designs. This channel is awesome
Minor one but I love how in one of the shots of Blue Goku they gave him his little spike of hair again that points away from the main hair. It's really minor and I get why many people wouldn't notice or care about it plus it could very well just be perspective, but I always loved that little notch, it gave blue SOME distinction from the ordinary Super Saiyan form that really to me was part of what gave it some identity.
DJ-Hotwings Yeah, I know how you feel. I believe even in Toriyama's original version that extra spike was just a byproduct of his modern approach to drawing hair, not a conscious design choice. At least Goku's Super Saiyan God form now looks more distinct from his regular hair.
@@Toanuriamer99 I'm pretty sure it's on purpose becuase when he went ssj the hairstyle did not I repeat DID NOT HAVE that extra spike so it was definitely something they noticed to differentiate between the two forms besides the color
Son Goku It was on purpose in Yamamuro's design, but are there two pictures of SSGSS Goku drawn by Toriyama that are publicly available? If both of them were drawn with the extra spike, it was probably intentional.
Naohiro Shintani is probably an example, if not THE biggest example, of Dragon Ball's leap into a style evolution that's happening to its art style. Tadayoshi Yamamuro's shiny action figure style has not been seen in much promo material lately and you couldn't believe how refreshing that is. It's so nice knowing how the movie's hype is reeling new fans into it with all the recent trailers popping by these past couple weeks also. My brother, who is not normally a fan of Dragon Ball, outside of the Battle of Gods movie and the last arc of Super, has gotten very excited for the movie and we actually started bonding again because of it. It's almost surreal to think that, if this movie wasn't so visually appealing and interesting just on what we've seen so far, I'd be damned to be living in the bad timeline had this movie went with modern Yamamuro designs. 😣 Those Gogeta designs are quite varied by their different perspectives as you stated but are also far more appealing to me than anything I've seen in Super's design sheets. I always thought Yamamuro was still a good artist but thanks to you, Ajay, I have seen the light on how good character design sheets should look and help an animator understand the subject's body structure in various expressions. And yes, that smug Freeza face is the stuff of legends and well-deserved to be your spirit animal. 😂 I'm so happy that you're going to Japan not just for the movie but for the country and experience also. Make sure you don't die on us, good sir. You're far too young and important to go on so soon but I'm sure you'll be fine over there. I hear Dragon Ball fans from the anime's motherland are the most divisive so you'll probably find a lot of haters there. Or the opposite, you never know! I liked this video, especially the other ones based entirely on the character designs, so I must say as your faithful subscriber that I am really looking forward to seeing your future breakdowns on more Super: Broly movie's content. Thanks again, Ajay!
I was loving it all,(especially all of Frieza's expressions) and then the Bulma sheet came up, and I practically cheered when I saw her shouting expression in the bottom right. I never had a strong opinion on Bulma one way or the other, but seeing her look so good here, even though she can't be playing a massive role in the story, really just makes this all even better. They all just look so right, and that's a relief after what Super gave us for most of its run
Looks like his head is tilted down slightly. Which lends to and exaggerates the scrunched nose n mouth on blue. Freezer looks absolutely magnificent and the best imo.
Finally got around to watching this as i've now seen the movie in person (i was trying to keep spoilers to a minimum). These character sheets are so expressive, it's lovely.
2:00 Thank you! Some guy on Kanzenshuu was trying to argue with me that I was some nutty fan-theorist by saying you could sort of see Vegeta on one half and Goku on the other. It's one of the reasons he's designed the way he is!
I agree with you Ajay, my favorite is the SSJ design (when that first picture of Ssj Goku first came out in the new style, it was also my favorite. Seems the SSJ art style he uses is a step above the others). That SSB has awkward feature placement and once again like you mentioned, it's one of the things that while small to some, are big to others (like me). I really hope continued improvement in that area evolves. Some time ago when I saw the Goku expression sheet I immediately noticed that the face was no longer derpy as it was in the KV which made me very happy. I still think bringing the nose down as you did on Social Media of that shot will make it look 10x better, but at least Goku doesn't look like he originally did. That KV really annoyed me lol. I personally enjoyed Yamamuro's Frieza a lot so I disagree with you on that point. Frieza looks okay in these newer sheets but there are some shots that still look awkward to me. However, it's another thing that hopefully continues to improve. It's no secret that overall I'm not the biggest fan of all of Shintani's new designs. Coming from someone who still really prefers Yamamuro's style, I have to say, if Shintani continues to make these little improvements here and there with the focus on feature placement as well as making the characters look a little more their age, many of the issues that fans have with him will slowly dissappear. Cheers for the video Ajay, and hope you enjoy your stay in Tokyo!
Yeah that development of Goku looks beautiful, you can see the little changes they made that makes the art style looks enticing as the original while feeling fresh off the block.
People will always talk about how great Takahashi's art is and will go the "Takahashi art and Shida animation" way when discussing them, but I think people sleep on Shida's skill all around. Look at his Gogeta still (2:19) and you see the beautiful Z style drawing and that great shading that, in my opinion, is masterfully done.
Shintanis designs are very beautiful and give that nostalgic 90s feel to it it doesn’t feel like dbs it feels more like z toyotaro needs to take notes upon this or get replaced by shintani in drawing the manga
I just love Shintani's 'high' noses and mouths. Feels like a little nod to the overall 90's anime designs, where visual approaches like that were sort of common
I tried so hard to avoid spoilers and then youtube threw thumbnails of Gogeta at me along with various shots of the final battle. Seriously how huge of a surprise would this have been if they hadn't spoiled Gogeta? There would've been an audible "Thunk" as every jaw in the theatre dropped at once.
Amazing video as always! We'll be in Tokyo next week to watch the movie as well, have you found any movie theatres that will show the film with subtitles?
I'm neither Goku nor Vegeta I am *Goat-geta* it's over Broly I've come for you! Every force you create has an echo, your own Bad Energy will be ur undoing!
I've been wondering if that re-shading of ssb's hair and aura is just that, a re-shading, or if it's actually meant to be ssb evolution. Either way I think it just looks soooo much better!
I am really not surprised that they added Gogeta Blue at all, if not only for the fact that now that Blue exists, they don’t have to add SSJ4 Gogeta into Dragon Ball FighterZ Because you already know he’s gonna be in FighterZ
I think the reason why Gogeta now rocks the black-yellow clothes has much more to do with Super Saiyan Blue than with bringing it closer to Gotenks. In the old films, orange accented the Super Saiyan hair quite nicely. In this movie though, blue pairs with yellow far better than with orange, and SSB Gogeta will be the form everyone remembers from this movie so they had to nail the colors just right.
I have ALWAYS said that Gogeta has Vegeta's ENTIRE face but with a strand of hair coming down, which he got from Goku. He doesn't have Vegeta's face on one side and Goku's face on the other like people keep saying. He had Vegeta's entire face since his first appearance against Janemba.
Bottom left of SSJ Blue Goku sheet looks like it's taken from the Cell/Gohan fight right before he uses instant transmission to take cell to king Kai's planet
Where can we get the image for the new Gogeta by Noahiro Shintani? I've been looking all over the web and can not find it. I just want to use it as a screensaver. Where can we view this without paying to join some site?
Only thing I don't particularly like about the new designs is how young everyone looks. Goku, Vegeta, Bulma - they are mature, 40 year or people. They really shouldn't look like their Frieza Saga counterparts. Yes, yes, Saiyans keep their young appearances for most of their lives but look how well their maturity was shown by Toriyama in the manga and people overseeing the anime. That's a nice throwback to the early days, I'll give them that.
Shintani blue gogeta doesn’t look really good to me but I’m still happy with how shida drew him. I’m hoping since we have a takahshi full power broly , we also have a blue or ssj gogeta !
It was bothering me since the release of Gogeta that about hims seemed "different". That's when I realised thay they changed the color of his waist band to match Gotenks
has anything been said about the color change for gogetas jacket? in fusion reborn its black and orange and now its black and yellow. everyones pointing out the widows peak thing so i was curious as to why they changed the color
