My favorite summary of Gohan's views on fighting and life in general oddly enough comes from the TFS abridged version of the History of Trunks. Trunks asks Gohan about the past, assuming it must have been better than the awful post-apocalyptic present, and Gohan's answer is that his father left him repeatedly, sometimes because he died, he was abused constantly, he watched friends and family die repeatedly while he could do nothing about it and, ultimately, he lived a life of constant warfare and trauma. It's sort of played as a joke, but it really does get at something the original series never touches on, which is the actual reason why Gohan hates fighting. He never had a chance to form any positive association with it. All he ever saw was senseless brutality and murder and it left him scarred, traumatized, and completely alone.
I never realized how poor of a writing trope the nerd is...yeah gohan should be excited about stuff and shown to be positive about his new way of life and successful not a nerd trope enforcing lame stereotypes.....thats true
Plague also has a video on dbz/dbs time travel. It's called time travel assholes infinite. The original video was taken down but there are at least two reuploads. One that's audio only, and the other being a true reupload. I highly recommend that video.
imagine reading dragonball from day 1...seeing goku go ssj would be your favorite unexpected moment..not gohan vs cell...goku is always kind and in control so to see him snap is rare at that point and to fufill the legend and stop his races murderer is symbolic for a character people had followed for 6 years
a lot of people complain about the goku vs freeza fight but 1. the anime extends it a lot 2. the fight and filler is limited in the manga 3. its suppose to be the climax of the story basically cause up to that point it was a natural progression and made sense as a story since day 1 cause goku transforms in the first 2 arcs implying hes not from earth and now we face the big bad that sent him there...it just comes full circle goku fulfills his potential becoming a legend..end of story right?...smdh nope marketing tactic time...4. at least goku vs freeza is a fight...goku doesnt just overpower him with the bomb or the ssj power..they are pretty even for a while as freeza was holding back...5. its been built up and is the ultimate evil vs hero superman vs zd of anime moment..and its glorious if you watched since day 1 this kid go from alone in the woods to hero ...if you started with z it wont hit you as hard and If you don't watch the build up it fails on its own...

this guy breaks down why I like goku naruto yusuke luffy satoshi guts taichi and many others..cause they aren't me..i like that in a main character...I like to see someone from a different perspective background angle with my morality but sometimes maybe not go through a journey and come out on top...which is why yugi motto is kinda boring cause hes me basically...I liked yami's struggles a lot more his confident character even if he was a little dark and goal minded above all else...I really liked season 0 yami but obviously they changed him to be more mainstream marketable for the card games to sell
i love how original dragonball has the budokai's mean a lot and goku saving the day be known but its not treated the way hercule is and how shiny and watered down the new tournament is and world of db..it used to be rougher and cooler...but now its more celebrated in universe lol..its bigger but more shallow too...nice commentary how martial arts in their world and the show became watered down too in real life trying to market to kids rather than tell a story...great parallels between gohan and hercule in the cell arc
freeza was the true end..marketing kept the series alive after that...toriyama was clearly trying to make the freeza fight bigger than anything to end the series with a nicely told full circle goku story so he could retire rest relax with his family but game merch toy sales would not let him neither would shonnen jump..shame really...you can feel the desperate quick cheap lazy first draft writing in recycling the red ribbon army using terminator as the inspiration since it was fresh and that time travel logic putting vegeta and blooma together for no reason making him apart of the gang and how he tried to get rid of goku and just end the series fast with gohan taking over and goku dead..he thought if goku was dead maybe he could get out of writing more dragonball and the series would lose ratings if focused on the comedy and gohan more which is easier to draw anyways then action drama plots.. ...it sadly did not happen that way so he had to draw more of that stuff so he wanted full control and he did the buu stuff..when you really look at the andoid/cell and buu stuff a lot of it feels forced and pointless for a reason....theres no arc its just stuff that happens...nothing is built up really until the vegeta stuff vs kid buu to help goku which sorta ends their rivalry but even that is rushed
as much as this is a good video from plauge and i understand his arguments, i always saw gohans moment as an exploration of imposter syndrone, and someone not realising how good they could be at something if they actually applied it with dedication and enthusiasm...like, gohan grew up with alot of negative assosiation with fighting and its because of that he always thought he was bad at it, because he felt bad every time he fought...thats just how i feel about his ex;losive moment in the cell saga, its him coming to terms with that if he tries, even if he doesnt enjoy it, he can be good at it.
dragon ball z abridged sort of touch on gohans hate for fighting in the way plague does...in dbz a abridged gohan snaps not because he wants to protect those around him, but because he finaly has the stakes stacked so much on his shoulders and his shoulders alone, that his pacifist ideology loses all integrity, its hypocritical...and andriod 16 becomes the catalyst for this, pointing out that he isnt seen any differently from a coward by choosing not to fight while others die to protect him. And that becomes his reason to fight, becomes his ideals arnt as important to him as protecting people.

i dare people to watch the goku vs pikkoro jr. fight and then watch any dragonball super fight outside of the final jiren stuff at the end of super...its embarrassing how serious brutal and good the drama and fighting was and how tamed and awful it is 30 years later...like its so bad it makes me laugh to this day to see goku and pikkoro in a scene together in super just chilling...its like how did we get here?..lol..in dbz it works better cause pikkoro is more stoic needed aka important and serious less comedic and pointless to a scene...he helps..same thing seeing vegeta and gohan interact...its just odd
gohan is 4 and a half at the start of that portion of the story while goku is 12 and a half by the first tournament 11 and a half to start the manga...yet gohan looks taller than goku lol..thats why they think gohan is older and goku is younger...simple size lol..they don't pay attention to the actual said ages they just use eyes to make assumptions
while the buu saga is dragged feels sloppy on and has a lot of stupid choices, the stuff with kid buu and on kais planet all works if your a fan of the characters...goku vegeta the dragonballs everyone one earth satan dende the kais and fat buu all are important to the climax and it finishes vegetas rivalry with goku nicely which started the arc anyways so that was necessary regardless of gohan or goku killing buu since it was never settled really just put on hold and then vegeta dies ..it works as a resolution arc imo..better than the cell arcs ending fights did...jus a fact...so lets be real the android/cell arc is worse than the buu freeza or saiyan arcs as a whole ...it just is...it feels the most jarring as an ending..so glad it wasn't the end of the series...it could of ended with freeza or buu...ending with cell would of bene so forced
goku is likeable despite his flaws gohan rarely has negative flaws yet hes unlikeable ...main character should be flawed...but self doubt is boring and outplayed
i hate how gohan is a plot device...why can't he be a side character grow so then one day he surpasses his father?..why does he have to be so strong so young without much training?...why doesn't he take over vs buu...not before then?...ruins the entire story for me ...he surpassed goku at age 11?..wtf is that shit...hes not a character hes a device
Sammy Dray I disagree with you thinking gohan hates fighting and only wants to be a scholar cause of chichi. If that were true gohan wouldn’t have a character. Gohan doesn’t have the passion for fighting like other z fighters but he still enjoys it. He purposely ignores chichi orders to avenge piccolo to go to namek. On his way there he telepathically trains with krillin and when they’re done gohan is smiling talking about how great the fight was. Your wording gohans life to be terrible and although it really was that’s not whats meant to take away from it. Gohan was barely friends with krillin and krillin dying was more meaningful to goku cause he’s main character of the series. Goku lost his best friend not gohan. Gohans best friend is the man he spent a year with teaching meaningful things and sacrificing himself in order to save his life. You call piccolo abusive when he’s trying to make gohan stronger and it actually worked though. There friendship is shown through the whole series. Goku only said that to gohan cause of the uncontrollable anger and power of super saiyan. And back to chi chi. You think gohan studied his whole life and became a scholar forcefully cause he hated it and that’s what his mother made him do. No chi chi just wants the best for gohan and gohan knows this and she raised him to be smart like a good mother would. Sorry man the first half of this vid is entirely wrong imo.
Sammy Dray After gohans random burst of anger and power, which is his character for the frieza saga which is why it’s so astonishing that he’s even able to hit frieza. There’s always been that humongous power in gohan that never fully uncovered. It isn’t something they pulled out their ass. Gohan always gets these burst of power and when it’s over he becomes useless again when the Gillian isn’t fazed and he’s saved by piccolo or goku or krillin. This is the whole reason he turns supersaiyan. Why did you just totally disregard gohans super saiyan scene and only refer to the scene his hair changes? Gohan gets this same feeling when this time he sees HIS FRIENDS are hurt not him. They aren’t protecting gohan. Gohan needs to protect them. He screams to leave then alone and now gohan is the savior not his dad. It’s like so obvious through the series I don’t know how you could interpret it this way.
