Are you considering making the plunge off the deep end into big aperture territory, or maybe just curious about the crazy people that own these large telescopes? This video is an honest assessment of owning a large 24" f/3.1 GOTO telescope.
From the lifestyle changes that need to be made, to a comparison of views it provides against a 8", 16", and EAA!!!

Great points!! I had a similar experience as you were talking about when I went from a 6” reflector to a 10” dob. I live near Detroit and yes, the views got a lot brighter. But so did the light pollution. You just can’t take advantage of the increased resolution potential in light polluted sky’s. All the contrast gets washed out.

That's a beautiful 24"! I'm hoping to get something similar if I can ever move out of the city and into darker skies. My clubhouse has a 25" F3.5 and fellow members have dobs ranging from 6" to 20" and I always love the clear summer nights when everyone brings their gear. I set up my AP stuff and walk around and look at stuff through their eyepieces. Some of the stuff I've seen through the 25" is etched into my brain.

Thanks, yeah some of the views through a big scope are crazy!

Always a good day when Vlad puts out a video! Thanks for showing us your giant premium photon collector :) 2:59 there's a skywatcher newtonian just sitting there all by itself on the floor besides the rack.....it looks so sad :D

Great video, I was intrigued as to what you had to say with a 24 inch scope! Very good presentation, And I like your practical comparisons with the various other scopes and magnification info. Was soooo cool to hear that You can crank up the magnification with such a big scope. Very cool sir!!

Thanks so much for this review, you really helped me out, higher magnification is where these big scopes really pull away from the retail available gear.

I have a 12” dobsonian and a 4” apo refractor. I wouldn’t go above 12” as I find it to be the limit for me in transporting it around. PS:- It’s also a solid tube which doesn’t help.
@AVTAstro
@AVTAstro Год назад
Yeah in a solid tube a 12" is a large scope for sure.

I recently bought a 16" used Teeter and I can thoroughly agree for the need for clear dark skies for these large fast Dobs. Quality Optics matter too much more at this level. I'm no expert and I can see the difference between my Televues and lesser brands. Paracor also a MUST

There seem to be objects that benefit more from aperture than others. M42 didnt look (to me, imho) dramatically better in the 25 than it did in the 12 to me. E and F jumped out, and the image scale was much larger. But the color was rhe same as 12. The Flame looks massively better. Lagoon and Triifid though, they are real showers in the 25. The pink and blue in the Trifid, and the light blue in the Lagoon! I actually can see these same colors with the 12 inch Binoscope too, but just barely in the mono 12 inch, and in the 8 no color at all. And then there is Eta Carinae...I'll leave it at that 😀

Thanks for a great video, very interesting to me because I had an Orion 16” go to and wanted more aperture . Bortle 4, 21.46 sqm skies. I sold the 16” and ordered a 24”, optics made in Anza,Ca and scope by Starstructure in Florida. I’ve had the scope for about 6 months now, still packaged in 3 pieces, just finished observing deck where it will be permanently mounted. So your video was of great interest as to what to expect, especially the part about cranking up the power. Thanks again!!

Pristine sky is very important. When I was 13 yo my uncle took me to the Mount Wilson Observatory after an Angels baseball game at Dodger Stadium. It was an adventure to drive up there back then and we didn't know if any telescope would be open, but the 60 inch was open to public viewing. I do not remember what we were looking at, but it was crystal clear. Now because of light pollution from LA the Wilson Observatory is having serious issues and has to use long exposure photography in many directions.

Yeah I was at the Wilson Observatory about 13 years ago. Light pollution is out of control. :(

I've just become aware of the APM 7.7 - 15.4mm superzoom eyepiece for around $/£400. A comparison with the Baader mk IV zoom would be a good watch.

I'll reach out to APM and see if they can send me a review unit. I'd love to try that eyepiece, thabks for the recommendation. Best, Vlad.

Great looking scope. I'm no fan of climbing stuff at night so my limit is the 16" Dob (I'm tall). But even so my biggest today is a 10" Dob.

I just watched your video about binoculars...I have a pair of Orion 25x100 binoculars...I only took them once to a darker site and I was amazed... now after watching so many videos and pictures taken with a bigger scope I'm planning to get in the future a 10 inch dobsonian...is that a good starting scope or I should start with a smaller ( 5,6,8 inch) ... I will primarily use it for visual observations. Thank you!
@AVTAstro
@AVTAstro Год назад
I'd say that if space and your physical ability to move the scope are not an issue I would really do a 12". To me anything smaller and I'd just get a c8. Hope this helps.

Hello again. thank you for taking the time to go over all of the specifics of your telescope. After spending the past few weeks searching the web for large telescopes, i think I like this one, would I bee asking too much of you the share with me the specs of yours to give to Equatorial Platforms. I'm a little nervous building one from scratch as you have. that is an area I'm not really skilled at. I didn't know what to tell the at EP. if you are willing and need my email address instead, please let me know, Thanks again🔭

Ive been planning for some time now on getting a larger telescope and really have narrowed it down to this one. Visual observation is my favorite above all. I spend all night most nights just observing. Can you point me in the right direction for getting one like this? Thanks

Thank you. I'm building a dedicated open top shed for a big rig. I'm doing my best to contain myself until I find just the right one. Do you mind sharing a ballpark price range?
@AVTAstro
@AVTAstro 5 месяцев назад
Very cool! Proce wise there is a huge range. A lot of it depends on the mirror you build the scope around. I really don't know what they go for these days with all the inflation and such. I'd contact some company's for quotes. Really start with the mirror. That's likely half the cost of the scope.

I didn't know you could control GoTo with Sky Safari. Does that work with all GoTo mounts? I have a Orion 16 that I haven't used the GoTo much.

Yes you should be able to do it. You might need to get a Bluetooth adapter for the scope.

Could the 22” pick up the “red” color detail on the Orion vs the usual blue clouds? Curious what more it sees than the 8” dob
@AVTAstro
@AVTAstro Год назад
It's a 24" that I have. And yes like I said in the video you can start to see color in brighter objects. I see blue, green, yellow, and reds in m42. It's not like a picture though. Color is subtle and something you have to try to see.
