@@willowsverge3046 so true,.... i thought i was one of only a few people like that but it seems quite a lot of the population feel exactly the same. I love to learn but i hate lectures.
Nigel will love his life at Pemberton Farms once he gets accustomed to his new surroundings. Love that a relative of Neptune is coming to the farm. No question that the ladies will love him!🥰😂 Couldn’t see the back end of either bull very well. Boris looked taller and maybe a bit friendlier. Nigel’s build looked more squat…giving him that solid Angus look.👍👍
I remember the very first bull I ever bought. I had enough beef cattle in the herd that even though I was probably 14 or so dad said "Its time for either buying feed or buy bulls" I decided to buy the bull. Was a nothing special bull to breed heifers. turned him out and he literally did what Neptune did. threw out his shoulder. crazy thing about him is he'd pop it back in be fine one day than lamer than a three legged dog the next when he poped it back out. Course you need a good bull all the time so he went to the market and I received pennies on the dollar for him. Should've bought feed......, LOL
3 and a half years…. Time flies when you’re watching great content 👏🏻 remember the day you picked up Neptune definitely doesn’t feel like that long ago 😦😂
@@ajc5479 You may have a point about the other Nigel, but c'mon, an Aberdeen-Angus bull named Nigel - that's just plain insultingly wrong! Should be Hamish, Alec, Murdo, Malcolm, whatever - definitely not Nigel!🤣
Nigel coming to fill Neptune’s hooves - how lovely to have a cousin back on the farm. Looking forward to his arrival, and his realizing he will be famous soon. We can also hope Nigel will come to thrive on the attention he’s going to receive from his two new families!
So glad to have a Neptune cousin continuing his legacy you both chose the right bull for your heathers the ladies will love him and so will you guys welcome to the Pemberton farm Nige
A cousin of mine had his hand broken by a 2200lb. Black Angus bull loading him in a trailer when they retired him . His name was Viagra and definitely lived up to his name !!!! 😂😂
Tom, pickup truck or newer tractor??? Which would you use more. Which would benefit the farm more. What happened to that little fuel efficient tiny car you had awhile back. Be careful about taking on too much personal debt. Is the foot bath helping all the stock. What a massive improvement to the farm from a few years ago.
Congratulations! He looks great! Will you keep any of Neptune's heifers and do any 3/4 Angus experiments with Nigel for the farm shop? It seems like your shop is busier and busier. It might be nice to keep a couple of meat-only breeding cows. I am sad about Neptune, but SO EXCITED to see Nigel's personality unfold! 😍
Your Dad has a very good philosophy. I was taught at college you needed to replace often yet I’ve since come to think you much better off with your dads way keeping some profit in the job.
3 1/2 years ago the first video of yours came across my RU-vid recommendations, it was about picking Neptune for your farm, I hate that he hurt himself I felt kinda close to him as he was the one that brought me to you guys. I am gladdened that Nigel was chosen, he is of the same stock, and if he gets half the size and shape of Neptune he'll still be an awesome bull. So many of your videos take me home in my mind, we never had a huge farm, but we had 10 or so Charolais that were all descended from one original cow, and whatever bull she found when she managed to break free of her pastures fences. This was not so easy as it was 3 miles to the nearest Home, and they didn't raise cattle. Thanks for taking me back to where I came from.
It wouldn't matter if the new one was a relative in as much as he can still sire calves. He doesn't have to be a relative to be fertile. What you might expect w/ a relative would be similar confirmation & temperament & similar types of calves. I think they're going back to the same breeder bc they like the type of calves Neptune was throwing & they want his replacement to sire similar babies.
Such amazing stonework on the farm, the craftsmen ship, patience and time to build the fences, the foundations, beautiful countryside. Watching the process of selecting and the chat in the car on the way there is so interesting. To run the farm and then take time to put all these videos together is just fantastic. Many thanks
Going back to the building.... Andrew Wareings explanation of building is so easy to follow. He reminds me of Fred Dibnah he makes something so simple very interesting. Well done Mr Wareing.
Not many people remember Fred Dibnah, fantastic bloke..amazing steeplejack and loved his steam engines.. He was also a Lancashire lad, not too far from Pembertons..from Bolton just like my mum.
@@PaganAngel07 I'm originally from Bury myself. Fred is a legend. I wanted to highlight Wareings great work and especially Andrew like I said a great explanation on how it all works. Many thanks Katherine.
Darn, my pick was Boris, but I'm sure you guys know 1000% more than me about cattle. I'm more dogs, horses and sheep orientated. Can't wait to see vid of him at the farm.
Nige caught my eye as they approached the trough, has a balance to him Boris didn't. Mind I am a dog breeder and exhibitor of little black square foxy faced Schipperkes, Top Breeder, Stud & Brood in UK & IR...pre Covid lol, just like my animals to be balanced and well put together
Im so happy for you guys finding such a nice bull! With his build and temperament youve gotten the best possible bull. That has to be a relief to have that problem solved for sure. As always you and yours are in our prayers! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🐄🐄🐄🐂
Please can we have a "Father and I" compilation? I could just see the gears in your father's head working when you got into the car.....I imagine had he not been on the phone it would have been another gerat "father and I" moment. Everyone loves your Father's Grammer and Pronunciation Pointers..... It's time for a SPECIAL!!!!!
Tom, your videos should be shown to young or new farmers, as you always pick a nugget of information up. You were looking at the bulls thinking meat production. I was thinking temperament. Is the gap between Neptune and Nigel far enough back if they sort of cousins? Another great video guys 🐃
A Farmer takes delivery of a new prize stud bull. The bull is released into the pasture & the bull goes to work on the herd. After servicing half the herd, the bulls eyes roll back & he staggers over & collapses under a big shady tree. Concerned, the farmer calls his vet. The vet examines the bull & gives the farmer a bottle of pills. He tells the farmer to give the bull 1 pill each day. The farmer does so & the bull jumps to its feet & runs out and services the rest of the herd. When the farmer was asked what was in the pills he said : 'Dunno fer sure, but, they tasted like peppermint.' !
I have to say, I was reppin for Borris at first, going around the farm you could called him 'PM' ! XD as is, we can nickname Nigel as "crazy wanker" XD
So the Ginger Warrior's got a bad knee, eh? You want to watch yourself, mate - poor old Neptune had a busted shoulder and disappeared in mysterious circumstances... 🥩🍽️
"The best bull"??? The one with the BIG BALLS! Or horns. You could dress up as a matador and wave a red cape at one of them and see who charges you. Can you run fast??
Are you having Nigel semen tested? (just thinking about that beautiful Highland bull who settled zero cows...) I am glad you are able to go back to Neptune's breeder.
Nigel.....is that his given name on his Registration Papers?? What are his Data and Predictabilities? We call those Performance and EPDs in North America.
Lost our bull with exactly the same problem last week 10 yr old Angus so be interested to see what you get 🐃 can't beat a good Angus bull 💪🏻vid made me laff cos when me n the hubby go out for a drive we look at other cattle in fields and admire Thier buildings etc 🤣🤣🤣
Ripper bulls, very even across the top line. Good depth in the barrel, all young so rear end will fill out quite a lot with a few more months on him. Few yrs ago I was in your area on an Agri study tour from Australia. Wish I knew about your channel back then. Your cattle in UK are much more muscle content . Different market I suppose. But can’t go wrong with any of those bulls. Would have been happy to put any of them across my herd
Do you look at EPDs (Estimated Progeny Differences) or other measured/tested genetic indicators? I am from Canada and always want to know the EPDs before using a bull. Do you have a different genetic measurement system? "Eyeballing" a bull can tell you a lot but will not always tell you how the calves will turn out.
So you go shopping for a bull and you make the Ginger Warrior impersonate a billy goat! 😛 Those big boys you were looking at were shy? Swipe right..... Note: Im no expert but the one bull had a stiff back leg. Not sure if hes the one you chose. Is this bull getting a tat as well?
Did you check his equipment for adequacy? Some heifers are such size queen, you know? Also, if he is small some bulls will want to mount him. You have to know what you are dealing with in every way!
Thanks. You wouldn't believe what advert popped up partway through the video. One for food and the introduction was a burger! Think Google got their algorithm a bit wrong on thiz one.
I understand what you are saying about the anatomy of the bull and what he will produce for you, but wouldn't testing of the sperm be beneficial also? Did I miss you mentioning about that, or are you keeping the video more PG rating?
I have never really worked with cattle (just a little bit of dairy farming in 2000) so wouldnt have a clue what a good bull should look like. Now, if you were looking for a tupp that would be a different matter... I know you know what your doing so im sure that Nigel will do you proud and i hope he does everything you need him to. Thanks for another great video as usual Tom and the ginger warrior and look forward to the next one.
Good reasoning for choosing the bull 🐂 Think about the end product 👍 because there's no point producing stuff that people don't want to buy. Hope he does a great job for you 🙂
Question. Does the new bull get tested for fertility before the purchase is finalized? Is it even important? Just curious about what happens if the new bull ends up firing blanks.
Worked on farms in that area of North Yorkshire in the mid seventies as a lad nice part of the world, some cracking people. Hope this young bull works out fine for you. So much happening this year for you hope you all get chance now and again to draw breath. Best of luck.
I am curious - Why an black angus bull and not a holstein? you could be producing better milk cows. Is the meat portion of your business more profitable?
Why did you choose a bull which is related to neptune instead of choosing for fresh blood? Since now Neptune's daughters will breed with their own family right?
We’re not dairy we’re a beef farm so we have lots of bulls and steirs but we had a Angus bull he was absolutely massive he weighed 910 kg and he was only 19 moths old but he was so friendly and he literally got bullied by cows like 400kg Angus breed are great still never trust a bull always be careful around them
Great video from start to finish good change of scenery. Interesting en route conversation. For me it was between 52 & 54 , both up to the trough first , were not spooked by the noise of the trough being hit, at that point 54 took it for me he took handling better. Then you went into the detail of his makeup still 54. I hope your mum’s car returned home without too many scratches. Good to see you on some downtime a weekend away
i dont know why they talk up neptune as much as they do, he only lasted 3.5 years with constant foot problems and eventually now this shoulder issue. That is not an "excellent" bull
Can you do a video about why you breed dairy cows to a beef bull? Also why you really do not respect having a bull in the pasture (especially a Angus) they can be the nicest bull in the world and still gore you. I have friends who have lost their father that way and have seen it done to a family member. You really need to remind people of this in your videos because right now the way it looks is so dangerous.
Great video again. I would have picked the other one (cant remember its name) only because the blood lines are different. Is Nigel not closely related to Neptune? Not sure if it matters as it is distant but new blood lines surely would be better.
I'd ask your butcher what kills out best, if they're all going through your shop that is. We've run Angus Bulls for a long time and look for long legs and long spine the stores always make better money at auction, opposed to bigger rumps. Angus Bulls are usually quiet anyway, especially compared to dairy breeds. We like to buy wheeton bulls form john Loftus, keep em 2 years and they have an excellent resale value, and strong feet (which Neptune obviously didn't!)
So exciting thank you so much for sharing this monumental moment ❤ it's the next generation wow huge decision making process an we got to watch . Wow. So cool
You have a closely related bull coming and he breeds the heifers from the other one it is going to be genetics that maybe undesirable from related breeding not working out. Is the goal to turn a dairy into a beef herd and do away with the dairy end? A.I. is the safe way with more variety of genetics, any breed and oodles of choices.
