Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief directed by Alex Gibney and featuring Paul Haggis and Jason Beghe is reviewed by Ben Mankiewicz (host of Turner Classic Movies), Matt Atchity (Editor-in-chief Rottentomatoes.com), Alonso Duralde (TheWrap and Linoleum Knife podcast) and Christy Lemire (www.ChristyLemi...).
See what other critics are saying: www.rottentomat...
Directed by Oscar winner Alex Gibney and based on the book by Pulitzer Prize winner Lawrence Wright, Going Clear profiles eight former members of the Church of Scientology-whose most prominent adherents include A-list Hollywood celebrities-shining a light on how the church cultivates true believers, detailing their experiences and what they are willing to do in the name of religion. One of the most talked about films at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, this powerful documentary highlights the Church's origins, from its roots in the mind of founder L. Ron Hubbard to its rise in popularity in Hollywood and beyond. Going Clear is a provocative tale of ego, exploitation, and lust for power. (C) HBO

I wish this had been a documentary mini-series. I've read the book and there's so much more interesting stuff to cover.

I just watched Going Clear - if what it alleges is true, the IRS have a lot to answer for! This was, for me, the most interesting part of the story - how the IRS gets to decide what is/isn't a religion. Scientology would have gone under in the 80's but was effectively saved. Their tax-free status as a religion clearly enabled it to grow and prosper.

Scary documentary....shades of Jonestown. I hope it doesn't end that way. All hail Xenu.

I just loved how bat shit crazy Hubbard was and then we see them saluting his Picture. That just sums up religion for me. Some nutjob comes up with some crazy story and people worship it and lets it define their life. Amazing.

now just imagine that in scientology "churches" around the country, when those people get done with their day or course or whatever, they stand up and actually applaud at hubbards photo.

I think they didn't mention Katie Holmes because all the fmr Scientology ppl in the movie weren't part of the church anymore when Katie left

I wonder if 'We Stand Tall' is a veiled barb at Miscavige. It's pretty funny seeing him front and centre belting it out when clearly he doesn't.

Tom Cruise has a bit of a dilemma ahead of him. Does he abandon Scientology and continue his movie career with a wounded reputation? Or does he continue on with this cult and barbeque his acting career? Honestly, I think he is officially stuck in this cult. For one, he is basically a God to this circle of people. Slaves who work for 40 cents an hour basically mod his motorcycles and fix his house. Who would want to leave that? Secondly, he has been audited extensively, and if he tries to leave, the church can frame him very easily with all of the information they collected on him. Third, the guy is officially coo coo for cocoa puffs. He really believes that he has special powers, and that post partum depression is just in the mothers head. I cant believe I am saying this, but I wouldn't want to be Tom Cruise right now.

I love Alex Gibney. This and Taxi to the Dark Side are two of the best documentaries I have ever seen. I was disturbed watching them and I didn't want either of them to end. But watching this just made me feel worried for those still in the church, I really hope they get out and that people like David Miscavige are kept away from people.

I was in the Church of Scientology for three weeks almost 28 years ago in 1987. They still send me correspondence to my previous addresses. Anyone (a counsellor, a psychotherapist, a psychologist, a psychiatrist, or indeed a Scientologist) who tells you they have all the answers to your problems is lying.

Laurence Wright is a reputable journalist, for that reason he doesn't mention Holmes because she isn't speaking about her life with Tom C. or scientology. Wright as a good journalist isn't interested in 'hear say' OR rumor, he's only interested in what he can verify and for that reason he doesn't use Holmes. Also Wright didn't want to use celebrity as the total tool for what is right or wrong with scientology because there are a lot of 'little people' every day people who are being cruelly affected by this so called church and its those people who actually have suffered the bulk of the abuse.

The documentary will tend to confirm the negative opinions of those who don't need anything to help them with their minds. The ones who need it will have to weigh dealing with this organization against the benefits to their lives, especially of Dianetics, which, unlike Scientology, is a mental counselling technique and has nothing to do with religion. Fortunately one can do Dianetics with a partner using just the Dianetics book. In my experience the ones who did best started out that way, and had little if any trouble later on. The ones seeking spirituality, less so, at least as far as I could tell. The tended to float in and out of Scientology based on their faith, and not solid gains they realized in their lives, such as better health, freedom from addiction, sharper awareness, more empathy, etc. Had they realized these things (as I did myself), they'd be less prone to get over-involved or ignore it all, but have a sane approach to their participation. It is work doing Dianetics, with or without any help from an organization, money and whatnot, but can be almost free of charge if you're willing to do that work.

I just want to say that yall spent the whole video talking about the content and not the documentarian and his film making. To me that means that your 8's were a little low. I have watched hundreds of your WTF videos. I've never seen yall so enthralled by a subject. I will watch and I'm presuming you gave this a 9.2 and not an 8.4. :) Matt Christy Alonso Ben, You're the best!!!!
@JamesCartermusic
@JamesCartermusic 9 лет назад
That's a pretty simple answer. Sure the film making is one thing, but this is a DOCUMENTARY, all that is going to matter is the story, that's the main focus.
