Welcome to Auxhart Gardening! I’m Rachel, a small-scale southern gardener growing near Clemson, SC, zone 8a. I mainly garden in-ground, with containers as secondary production spaces.
Knowing where your food comes from is powerful, and empowering, and I believe we can change the world through gardening education.
The agricultural system is broken; we’ve monocultured nearly every major crop, forcing the use of chemical pesticides and inorganic fertilizers to maintain large-scale food production. I believe there’s a better way.
By teaching people to rely on themselves, even just a little, for their food supply, we might be able to create some breathing room for our strained food system, allowing for change to start happening.
By educating people about where food comes from and how to grow it, we can raise awareness about our broken agricultural system and form a community that understands how to fix it.
By forming a community, we can move toward creating real change in the world.
My goal is to educate; yes you can grow food, yes you can do it without chemicals, yes you can do it in your backyard or on your windowsill. And yes, that can make a difference in the world.

If you want your runner beans to set more beans Pick the 1st few that have developed and it will explode with new growth. These dried beans are not only beautiful but delicious in soups❤

Hey Rachel, Lotsa great info today. I do believe one of the foundations of permaculture is the inclusion of perineal food plants esp fruits and nuts. I do not know how it is labeled and organized just that it is in there. Garlic I am growing hardneck here in Minnesota. This fall I am going to get one softneck variety to plant next spring in addition to the fall plantings. Really happy you are doing well looking forward to next week. Cya next thyme, Steven

Hi Rachel, Can you share your procedure on adding bokashi into your compost pile? Do you bury it in? Or add it as a layer, then add carbon on top? This seems like a far better method than a soil factory, which takes up space and is additional work
@AuxhartGardening

I try to bury it in the middle of the pile mostly. I'm not super exact about it, just try to get it all covered.

No rain in the past weeks? Here it has continued to be extremely wet (and cold), my plants are visibly growing slower than last year. Luckily, next week will be warmer!

It's the longest we've gone without rain in months I think. Luckily most things are established enough to be just fine.

Hey Rachel! Your garden videos are so fun, and its refreshing and encouraging to see amateur oriented videos instead of some of the over-produced content! Much appreciation from Canada!!!

15:50 hi Rachel, can you please talk about your plans for the perennial onions? I have walking onions in my backyard (which are perennial) but the harvest is not impressive, the yield above ground is tiny onions, and they don't replace bulky onions in ground form the annual onions. I'm looking for alternatives too.

I've ordered some potato onions from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange that should be shipped in the fall. They're supposed to be a bulbing splitting onion that rarely goes to seed, while having a long storage time. So I'd expect smaller bulbs than annual onions but bigger than walking onions. Not sure how they'll turn out but we will find out together!

You don't need bag protection to save tomato seed. The shape of the flower means one has to almost deliberately cross them to get a hybrid.
@AuxhartGardening
@AuxhartGardening 2 месяца назад
Oh really? I've never heard that. I've definitely had my tomatoes accidentally cross already, however I do grow them all very close together.

I was wondering what you did about watering since your garden is so big (at least compared to what I'm used to). Then you mentioned the lack of rain with the Hardy Kiwi, makes me wonder if you just depend on rain? Everything looks amazing if that's the case!

I’m a Southern California gardener and am super jealous of anyone that doesn’t have to water during the summer! 🫨

I don't fully depend on rain, I have a drip irrigation system, but I try to use it as little as possible. I will also hose-water my transplants and seeds. I have a theory that by not watering them all the time they are making much deeper roots and are becoming more resilient to lack of rain. But the ground here probably does a good job holding water as well, I know I'm on top of the location of the old well from my property. Additionally, I mulch like crazy and I think that makes a huge difference in water-retention of the soil.

3:00 or may be combination of lack of water + high heat. turmeric likes a lot of water (but don't like wet feet)
